30 Day Juice Fast

I think you are looking at it the wrong way.. the comments aren't negative at all! Don't be so defensive~ These people are worrying about your health. A liquid diet for as long as you are planning to do it can be very dangerous to your system... Isn't it nice that all these people you don't know have taken the time to stop and tell you that what you are planning to do might be harmful? If they didn't care they wouldn't write their concerns... many of the people on this forum are very knowledgeable about such things from experience... Anyway... I just hope you might look at it in a more positive light... So good luck, and I hope you stay healthy in your venture~

Ok, show me actual medical peer reviewed studies that your juice fast actually cleanses. Cleansing is a scam that has been going on since the snake oil salemen of the old west..hell, longer.

Course you won't be able to that isn't backed by a company selling the stuff cause it is a myth, a hoax, a fraud. You talk about the pollutants and stuff we have. Guess what? We have a genetic system of filters and regulators that are designed to keep us healthy. Generations of evolution (or creative design if that is your belief) has created this marvel of a body. Shouldn't a hell of alot more of us be dying alot faster if what you claim is true?

It's a fraud. Pure and simple. Your science doesn't hold water (though you haven't actually shown science, just a web page that shows some quacks' ideas of fasting where it even mentions spirituality, which is not related to the body but to the mind). Post some links to real studies and I'll debate you on your facts. So far, you haven't given any that works.

Oh, and your reasoning that no one supports it cause it doesn't make money? Bull. If there was such a thing as an actual cleansing plan through juice only that can help you lose weight and live longer, hell yes you would see people making money on it.

like selling juicers...

or books about juicing..

or weight loss plans all about juicing..

Oh wait a moment..THEY DO.

Google juice fast and see how many sites selling plans and items pop up.

The effect is psychological, not medical. You think you should feel better so you do. The weight loss from before was due to science (low calorie intake). Juice diets do prevent your body from going into a state called ketosis. Ketosis means your body has no carbohydrates to burn for energy, so it has to burn stored fat or whatever else is available. You feel bad, even smell bad. That's what makes you feel like hell during a fast. But is that because the toxins are coming out? No! You're going into ketosis. It's known physiology.

i think 30 days is really extreme and i worry about what that would do other then cleanse. an adult body isnt made to only take on liquid for so long. when you juice do you separate parts of the plant or is it just pureed? and why not just eat the plant. the sugars will be absorbed much faster as a juice. have you heard of Rhodiola rosea? its a proven adaptogen. it might help you with what you are trying to do. it is an amazing herb.

Hey Dan,

I just wanted to stop by and say good luck. I don't recall you asking for advice or suggestions in your first post, and yet, there are some people here who just can't help but to spew their negativity into your diary. .. I've been through it on here myself. I got criticized because I ate cereal, you are getting criticized because you are drinking juice, it's like if it's not their way they try to run you off, which they did to me. Some like to argue around here, I'm not sure why though. Some who claim to know so much are NOT losing weight, they're at the same weight when I registered on this site last summer. These are the people criticizing your choices. You lost 70 lbs., you should be congratulated on that, not condemned. You clearly stated that you were trying a cleanse NOT a diet, but they only see what they want to see.

I am still a registered member here because the before and after section helped keep me very motivated, and there are a few diaries I follow. I've been lurking around here and nothing has changed, same people, same criticisms.

I agree, as you do, that it's a lifestyle change. You can't just do something for 30 or 60 days then revert to your old ways or you will regain the weight. That's common sense isn't it? Some people here think you don't have common sense, apparently.

I made HUGE changes in my diet and have picked up some new healthy eating habits myself, that being said, I'll never give up cereal, I'll never give up sweets and I'll never give up fast food. I just know how to add it into my daily calories to maintain my current weight, which I'm very happy with.

When I started my diary, at first it was pretty positive feedback, but in time, the negative comments came. I was told unsalted saltines were "junk" I was told cereal was "junk" and that having 3, 6 oz cups of coffee a day was "junk" .. People here need to realize that prior to these changes, instead of reaching for a bowl of Life Cereal, I would have had several bowls of high fat ice cream, instead of reaching for 6, 16 oz cups of regular coffee made with cream and sugar, I decided on 3, 6 oz cups of coffee (total 18 oz a day) made with fat free half and half and Splenda. These changes for me were HUGE... I can't stress that enough.

The only good advice I got on here was to add in fruits and veggies into my diet, which I have done and continue to do.

I set a start and end date for myself to lose some weight, and I was picked apart on that too. I was questioned why did I set a date? Well, because I wanted to? Wow- imagine that! I have a mind of my own.

I did reach my goal weight by the date I set, but not because of anyone on here, but because of ME and my determination to do it. Don't get me wrong, there are some really nice people on here who have encouraging words, unfortunately, the negative ones somehow overshadow the positive ones, at least for me they did.

One evening after a particularly stressful day, I logged in here and read something extremely negative in my dairy about all the "crap" I ate and became very upset.. and it almost sabotaged my diet completely. It got to a point I stopped writing in the diary here and kept a private one. Some people here say they want to help, but they write and comment in such a demeaning tone that you can't help but to get defensive, they copy and paste what you type and criticize you.... your words get twisted, it's quite a mess if you ask me...

Again, good luck to you.

Wading through

Dan~i totally get it. BEST of luck :):)

I get it too! How'd you do? What 30 plan did you use? I'm interested in maintaining my weight but becoming healthier. Dr.Schulze's incurables is too time consuming for my current situation but have auto-immune tendencies and am trying to encourage healthy cells and eleminate toxins; any recommendations on a juice fast plan from your research?

Thanks!

Wow, how did you find this thread ?

What a surprise to see a reply in my email.

Anyways, yes i did really good on my Fast, although i only did 10 days i lost 10 pounds and felt great.

I didn't really follow a plan, i just juiced every time i got hungry. I still juice regularly, at least once a day and sometimes still fast for 1-2 days.

My eyesight is also better and previous stomach problems are gone, of course this isn't directly from juicing, but juicing just creates a convenient way to get a concentrated amount of vegetables which i never did before.

This is the weirdest thing though, as the snow finally melted today and I was about to start my spring/summer training schedule today(I have a local set of 600 stairs that i have been walking/jogging the last couple summers). i was just telling myself i should kick it off with a 7 day juice feast! Your email must be an omen.

Hi Dan! Just wanted to say that your thread is very interesting!

I did a cleanse less than 2 years ago, for spiritual reasons, for 25 days, very similar to what you describe. I attained the clarity I seeked. I was also able to cleanse myself of irritable stomach aches, and for once in my life, not have to think about food. I made my connection to the earth, through running -quiet the mind. In the time, I learned how to transition into a raw vegan lifestyle. People always ask me if I lost a lot of weight on the fast, and the funny part is..no. I lost maybe 4-5lbs. When I did start losing was when I incorporated the raw vegan prepared meals and maintained it for over a year. Then, the lifestyle itself got too expensive, and the past associations overwhelmed me back into that cooked lifestyle, I once knew. Gaining weight again. Now, just fighting for it. I work out excessively, yet it's the balance of eating right consistently that I seek.

I do hope that you too, find something that you can maintain as well for a lifetime. Balance.

I do commend you on your focus. It does take a lot of hard work to lose 70lbs and that's a HUGE accomplishment. I definitely understand though, why everyone here is adding information to your thread in contrast to what you are doing.

I am a perfect example of those people, who can be extremist, yet still remain to find a happy balance. That's exactly what I seek now. Something that I can do forever. To understand the calories, the science, and flow of my habitual nature.

I have a JacLalanne Juicer too, and I love it! I wish you luck on your journey of life, Dan. You deserve happiness & success, as we all do. :) ~Peace & Joy~

My mother-in-law regularly juices, and she loves it. She leads an active lifestyle (trying to keep up with her daughter who is on track and plays soccer). She's told me it leaves her feeling good and healthy.

She's tried to get me to do it.. unfortunately I don't like vegetables (yet), so those icky green juices look pretty gross to me right about now.

So, good luck to you!

And i don't believe in the physiology of the cleanse either. Our liver is always working to eliminate toxins, cleansing diet or diet full of bad food. And 99% of toxins are excreted through our digestive tract whatever we eat. Some is also lost through sweat. What ever is stored and accumulated in the body is not going to be cleaned out by a liver cleanse because its the type of poison that stays in the body anyway.

But if you are going to drink fruit juice, you should know that its acidic and takes the enamel off your teeth, so you should always rinse well with water immediately after. Its also adds to tooth decay. When I drink juice and rinse, i soooo regret the lost of the taste from the juice from my mouth. But i don't do juice diets and I don't drink juice very often. Its better to eat just the whole fruit and vegetables, a raw diet if you are going to take this route.

About your sensitive stomach. Its worth getting that checked out by a doctor. It could be an ulcer. And it probably likes rich food the least. Fat is bad for sensitive stomachs i have noticed. So deep fried food should be a serious no no for you. If you have a helico bacter type of ulcer, its easy to test for and easy to cure.

Some of us find it hard not to try to tell other people what to do. I fall in this camp. Its a terrible tendency but its difficult to curb the inclination.

I juice it's good for you and all these people saying it's not probably are living on food that's not real like shakes and bars so they are living on cardboard providing their bodies with no real nutrition the reason why juicing does work is because after about 3 days of detoxing your body realizes it doesn't need so much and your cravings go away (probably cause you not living on processed crap) Juicing works and it does amazing things such as healing your body, it will also shrink your appetite, I promise do it for 5 days no cheating and it gets so easy after day 3 then next time you do it to detox it's a breeze. And your feeding your body what it needs, Check out Fat Sick and nearly dead kind of cheesy but it really shows you how vitamins and natural enzymes help us we need them.

If you have tried it and it did not that's one thing but flushing your body with vegetables and fruits does nothing but heal you. That's like saying eating healthy is a fad, some of us need extreme to wake ourselves up. I've juiced and it's amazing, After the first 3 days your body adjusts and it's not a fad diet by any means. It has actually been proven to cure diseases as well. Try it I dare you 5 days and your appetite shrinks and you have amazing energy. Don't criticize people because your not strong enough to do it. It's a great way to learn what your body needs and doesn't need.

It's not about being strong enough. I still would like to see a medical study the matches your claims. I'd love to read them. Just cut and paste since new members are not allowed to post links

I've done it myself and it's really helped my sugar addictions and immune system. There is obviously no way they are going to conduct medical studies as they have like any old doctor can go against a billion dollar industry. I understand your concerned for people but I did this diet with two of my friends for 5 days we all lost 7 lbs, have never had more energy and are eating really well now. I have a thyroid problem this is the first time in 7 years I have been able to lose weight and keep it off. I'm just simply speaking from personal experience. If you don't believe in the ability to detox then obviously you would never agree, but some people do. In addition I do agree with the principles of raw diets as well this is just a more quick way to shed some extra weight. I'm not saying this Juicing will make a healthy person any different but for those who eat lots of preservatives and crap that we were not meant to eat it really helps to flush all of that out and shrink your appetite so when you do start eating again your portions are small. I'm on day 5 of my second fast, will let you know if it does do more for my body as I go on. My goal is 10-30 days depending on how it effects me and if it is for instance clearing up my cold.

It's so funny to see how some people were sooooooo negative towards your detoxification venture. I wonder if that Professor J person has since this post started, has found the medical exams, because there are so many out there. I absolutely loved the documentary FAT, SICK & DYING (called something like that), it was so inspiring. I did my first 10 day juice fast back in 2005 and it was tough, but I loved it. I've been doing it 2x a year ever since then and recently after watching the documentary have decided to just incorporate it as part of my everyday food diet. Not exactly a fast, but I juice for breakfast and dinner pretty much every day now and just have a normal lunch. I feel so energized, so healthy and so focused. I hope you're still juicing to detox as it does work wonders.

i just wanted to comment on the whole jucing is a fraud thing, jucing is a great way to loose weight and keep it off. studies have shown that when u participate in a juice fast that the nutrians in the fruits and veggies you consume actually repair you intestines ; they say that it repairs its self so well thats its said to be lke that of when you were an infant . that is why it is important to gradually re indroduce food after the fast , just like you gradually introduce food to a child. The jucing fast not only allows your body to heal ,and detoxifies you it also allows you body to crave good nutrients such a fruits and veggies after the fast you no longer will crave fatty oils and startches like most people do . If you participate in a fast and give it a chance you would realize all of the great health benifits that come from jucing :)

Hey Dan!

Rock on!

Please don't listen to the negative posts here that keep spouting off ridiculous claims of fasting being not medically sound. It has been practiced for thousands of years.

Of the fact that you will only lose muscle.

Or that it is all about calories.

Total utter hogwash.

You're doing a cleanse! Not a "diet" for weight loss. Jeez! These knee jerk reactions are just as uninformed as the actual fad diets they are claiming to protect you from.

When your digestive tract is empty the opposing hormone to insulin, glucagon, rises. Glucagon does the opposite of insulin, it raises blood sugar in times of hypoglycemia. Once your liver had depleted its supply of glycogen, glucagon will begin the process of signaling the release of triglycerides from your adipose cells (fat cells). Then the process of converting the released triglycerides to glucose begins.

When there is muscle loss, people have a knee-jerk reaction to this as well. Muscle is mostly water. The water that goes inside the muscle when the muscle gets "big." It is not that your muscle suddenly builds all this new muscle tissue. When you lift weights and eat carbs, the carbs become glucose. The glucose signals insulin to be released. Insulin attaches to the glucose. Glucose attaches to water(H2O). The insulin receptors on the muscle open up and pump the insulin into the muscle cells. And in goes the glucose as well as water.

Over time new muscle tissue will grow but it takes a longer time.

when there is less glucose in the blood or less of a demand for muscular exertion there is less demand for glucose or water inside the cells. So it will start to release the water AND glucose if needed. And this will reduce muscle size, as well as muscle weight!

So when people say going on a fast will "Break down" your muscle, they are mistaken. There is no break down. It is simply your body adjusting to the appropriate signals they are receiving.

Furthermore, a fast has been shown time and time again to increase insulin sensitivity. Which also accelerates fat-metabolism and increases physical energy as well as muscle GROWTH after the fast.

So there is definitely fat loss that occurs. When I train body builders and prep them for competition, a fast is one of the things I do for this very reason. Insulin sensitivity together with heightened fat-breakdown.

And even more, when you juice (assuming you are not juicing with a high content of sugar) you are flooding your internal physical terrain with vital nutrients your body has not been able to get for a long time.

Our species has spent more time without food than with food. The idea that food is readily available all the time is a modern phenomenon. For thousands of years our species existed in feast or famine environments.

Our bodies are exceptionally intelligent and far more sophisticated than some "calorie in calorie out" machine.

Calorie in and calorie out simply is a myth. Calories have no bearing whatsoever on weight loss or weight gain.

Rock on Dan! You are inspiring.

It is tough and great to be with juices all 30 days. Definately weight loss will be done because no fat content will be added.

"Juice diets do prevent your body from going into a state called ketosis. Ketosis means your body has no carbohydrates to burn for energy, so it has to burn stored fat or whatever else is available."

Yo Einstein... physiology and nutrition are two completely different things. Vegetables ARE carbs!!!!! So there goes your theory!

Dan S! Good on ya!

Wow, can't believe someone resurrected this old thread. I never check this site anymore because of all the negativity from the know-it-alls. Anyways, in case anyone is interested, I am on the last stage of my fitness journey. I am in good shape now and work out 6 days a week, and still juice regularly (my jack lalane is on it's last legs though). It's weird timing for me to see something in my email on this thread today as me and my wife are starting another juice fast tomorrow (I never did one in 2011). We just bought all the supplies this weekend, we want to shed some more body fat for the summer. I am really pumped about it, I will have a nice body for the beach this summer the first time ever in my life.

I whole-heartedly encourage anyone having trouble losing weight to try juicing. It does work, 100%. you will not be hungry either, and will have lots of energy. Yes it is tough, but the end result is worth it. And there is no plan to follow, you just juice whatever (although i found veggies better than fruits for pure weight loss, but the green ones taste real foul).

Mabye i will start a new thread with before/after pics if anyone is interested. I gave up on this site after my attempt in 2010. I came here for inspiration, but if anything got really discouraged.
