20 pounds in two months

Unfortunately, that is a gain-- not a loss!

I put my hands in the air and confess: I am a yo-yo dieter; every other week, I think I've found the new best method to lose weight and I embark on a drastic calorie-reducing plan, only to lose myself a week later in a fog of carbohydrates and guilt.

Most recently, I had been volunteering at an eco-friendly community for the intellectually disabled which involved a lot of farm work and organic produce so that kept my weight in check ('was floating around the 150-something mark for a while there) and a holiday in early January gave me a reason to follow a healthy eating regime but since getting back to city life, I've managed to jump from 150 lbs at the end of January to 170 lbs as of this morning. Shocking!

I've never joined a weight loss forum but I think it'd be nice to converse with likeminded people while I try to change my lifestyle and get back into shape. When one finally holds themselves accountable, it is awfully hard to rationalize another day of binge-eating before dieting. So, to put a change to things I will begin my healthy lifestyle choices tomorrow (Sunday) rather than the classic start of the week.

I'll weigh-in on a weekly basis, eat 1400 calories/day with at least one hour of high-impact exercise. :) Thanks for reading.

Hey Sue, another irish head here!! Welcome to the forum:)

Thanks for posting in my diary:) support means alot!!

I am currently fighting my craving for chocolate. All i want to do is go down and eat a 200g bar we have stocked in our shelfs. Oh the TEMPTATION.

That is a short period of time to gain 20 pounds! But hun, it will defo come off if you stick to your plan. Also make sure to post in your diary everyday just to keep yourself on track and motivated- it seriously is so motivationg.

You can so so so do this:) If you mind me asking, what age are you? and whats your height?

Best of luck chick!!xxx

Aww, thank you! Yeah, I had been reducing my calories for ages because I wanted to go on holiday and when I got back I was STARVING so had a huge binge.. Before I knew it, that binge had turned into six weeks of eating everything in sight and now my clothes have all become uncomfortably tight *sobs

Another reason for the weight gain was leaving a healthy, high-exercise environment on a farm in Kilkenny and coming back to Dublin to live with my family who are all overweight and not very receptive to healthy eating--I think you're right. This will be a good motivator! It's definitely a hard thing to accomplish by yourself.

To answer your questions: I am 5'7" and turned 22 last month. How about you? These are prime years and I want to get to a place I'm comfortable with by summer so I can go to the beach without feeling self-conscious. I'm definitely with you on the chocolate cravings but I don't have any in my press--there is a bowl of bran flakes taunting me, though ;)

My goal weight is about the same as yours, by the way! I will update this daily and weigh-in every week. W-hoo!

Day three on my diet and going strong!

Monday and Tuesday, I ate around 1400/1500 calories of only whole foods. Today (so far), I have eaten 1000 calories--mostly of fruit, wholegrain bread, lean meat.. but I did have one "protein" bar this morning unintentionally; I decided to join a gym nearby because they have an offer of unlimited classes for E99/month. I opted for a "booty camp" class this morning and all was going well for the first half but in the second half I started to feel really dizzy and actually went blind for a few seconds. Silly me forgot to have breakfast and so the intense cardio/weight combination resulted in low blood sugar. I was given said power bar to counteract it! Mortification-station! But back on the horse tomorrow for the same class :) Good times.

I've been eating clean for a week (slipped-up for a day last weekend...whoops!) but I'm 163.5lbs as of this morning, so that's a 7lbs weight loss thus far :)

'Have been going to fitness classes almost everyday. Especially I like zumba fitness and yoga is a good de-stressor. Weirdly enough, exercise seems to curb my appetite.

Hi Sue :)

Good to see you here! I lost about 20 lbs in two months... :) it's been hard losing more since then but I did it by eating around 1,200 calories every day for 2 months! I mostly ate cereal for breakfast, stir fry veggies for lunch w/ tofu, and for dinner i would have a vegan boca patty or a burger patty with either rice or pasta (appropriate portions of course), it worked out nicely!!

I know you'll get to your goal :)

Good luck keep up the Zumba fitness!

Thanks so much for the encouragement! I met up with a friend on Wednesday and was rushing out of the door so grabbed a couple packets of chocolate animal biscuit-thingers, which ---of course--- set the tone for the rest of the day. I _did_ have a healthy meal at a Japanese restaurant, though: Salmon sushi and miso soup. I noticed a sharp decline in my mood after an evening of sugary/salty indulgence, so I got back on the wagon Thursday and I'm still going strong. Still 163 lbs but I am due a certain lady visitor any day now, so that's not so bad! I've been doing small work-outs at home but going back to the fitness studio tomorrow morning.

Oh, boy!

In fact, I started an IT course and my gym membership ran out, so I am regretfully even heavier than I was to begin with. 178 lbs this morning--erk!

Oh well, we can't change the past; only the future. Tomorrow I will be starting a clean-eat lifestyle again [About 1400-1500 kcals daily] with an hour of cycling and will make a conscious effort to update this.

Here's to dedication!

1 Banana for breakfast 100kcals

3 apples for mid-lunch 200 kcals

1 Banana as a walk-home snack 100 kcals

1 small muller rice yoghurt 100kcals

2 pieces of wholemeal bread with a small amount of peanut butter 350 kcals

1 handful of special K 50 kcals

A huge plate of vegetables 170 kcals

Small portion of vegetarian fried wholegrain rice 300 kcals

Half a cup of tea 50kcals

Total: 1420

+45 minutes of cycling and 15 minutes of yoga.

Thoughts: I had originally intended not to eat food with additives, but alas I found myself with some rather considerable cravings so think it might be wise to wean myself from sugar [again!] this week. All-in-all, I'm happy enough.

1 banana 100kcals

3 apples (small_ 150kcals

small bowl of brown rice 120kcals

1 bar of golden crisp 275kcals

1 packet of "waffles" 130kcals

2 small salmon fillets 300kcals

big plate of veg. 200kcals

Rock bun 300kcals

1 slice wholegrain bread 100kcals

Total:1675 [although I did overestimate on a couple choices up there ^^]

+1 hour of biking and 15 minutes of yoga

Thoughts: I think the rock bun was my pitfall today but I did bike for an hour, which equates to over 600kcals of calories burned, so it was a productive fat-burning day. However, tomorrow I will aim for 1400kcals total and more fresh produce.

I've figured that weighing myself everyday triggers binges--I am generally a very logical person, but when I overload on the salt and the next day, I am up 5lbs on the scale as a consequence, I can't help but freak out a little and sabotage my weight loss efforts. I think one a week will signal a more sincere number.

3 small apples 150kcals

3 snack-sized packets of yog. covered fruit 340kcals

2 chocolate kellogs squares 300kcals

1 plain square 120kcals

1 packet of cheese popcorn 135kcals

2 slices of wholewheat toast with a small portion of baked beans 300kcals

1 small plate of vegetables 100kcals

1 activia yoghurt 100kcals

Total:1545

+50 minutes of walking.

Thoughts: Today I am really tired, so I haven't quite decided whether or not I will be going on the exercise bike. One good trick to stop myself from overeating is to brush my teeth after my last portion of food for the day. I am happy overall with my calorie intake and I hope a small nap will give me enough energy to exercise on the bike.

Well, today was a maintenance day at best--but I am quite proud to have resisted the urge to binge and make it an _unproductive_ day.

1 pear and 1 apple: 100kcals

1 banana 100kcals

1 danone yoghurt 100kcals

2 pieces of toast with beans 350kcals

special k 200kcals

And here's where I went a bit off-track: my family ordered a takeaway and I ate approx. 500kcals of chips

+ 3 small choc. ices: 570kcals

Total: 1920

+ 10 minutes of biking _so far_ but am thinking to do another 20 minutes, which would burn-off about 300kcals today.

1 banana 100kcals

2 slices bread 200kcals

1 slice of bread w/ turkey 150kcals

small, skinless chicken breast 150

small amount of potatoes 200kcals

veg. 100kcals

yoghurt 100kcals

small portion of spicy lentil soup 140kcals

2 small slices of soda bread 200kcals

2 apples, 2 pears 200kcals

Total: 1440

+30 minutes intense biking and intermittent yoga sun salutes.

Thoughts: Well, I'm feeling quite good today. I really need to remind myself how great exercise is for one's mind as well as one's body! I also got 100% in my latest I.T. exam so that is a huge motivator. No emotional reasons to comfort myself, at least :)

My sister is also wanting to lose weight and has said she will diet with me. I really hope she gets on-board with this healthy plan. It is much easier to follow through with this lifestyle change when those around you are implementing it, too.

1 apple, 1 pear 100kcals

1 yog 100kcals

soup 100kcals

2 slices/bread 200kcals

2 bowls coco pops300kcals

1 apple 050kcals

2 spring rolls 150kcals

1 bread w/ turkey150kcals

vegetables 150kcals

rhub yog. 100kcals

bread w/soup 300kcals

coco pops 100kcals

Total: 1800kcals

+1 hour on the exercise bike and 15 minutes trampolining.

Thoughts: Well, today is a deficit which is good. I find weekends quite the challenge but exercising this morning helped me to stay on-track(ish!). Now my plan is to have a nice, relaxing bath and to watch a movie on Netflix afterwards. Tomorrow I will aim for 1500 with the same amount of exercise and no chocolate! It was remarkable how quickly I scoffed the coco pops yet how unsatisfying they were hunger-wise. Still, pat-on-the-back--this is the first weekend in a long while where I haven't stuffed my face!

1 banana 100kcals

salmon sandwich 250kcals

coco pops 150kcals

yoghurt 100kcals

3 pieces fruit 150kcals

coco pops 300kcals

4 cookies 320kcals

2 pieces bread 200kcals

chicken soup 200kcals

moroccan soup 200kcals

2 cookies 160kcals

Total:2130

+1 hour of cycling

Well, the cycling puts me at a deficit but I really need to keep myself more occupied next weekend. I have joined the July challenge and I'm feeling motivated to exercise for one hour/day while consuming 1500kcals. I lost about 2 lbs since last week but am looking for more next week!

Edit: I just completed another 40 minutes intensive cycling and some weight reps. That makes my actual caloric intake somewhere along the lines of 1100 for the day. Woo! Thank goodness for redemptive exercise.

Wow! This is exactly me:

when I overload on the salt and the next day, I am up 5lbs on the scale as a consequence, I can't help but freak out a little and sabotage my weight loss efforts.

At least, I hadn't thought about the salt contributing, but I do go right off when I see a gain, and eat in vengeance. Thanks for sharing that it happens to you, too. Logic will get us through!!!

I yoyo too. I've found that the Rotation Diet works well for people like us who find it hard to stick to 1500 cals a day ad infinitum

3 slices of soda bread 300kcals

1 tsp peanut butter 100kcals

2 fruit packets 100kcals

chocolate 400kcals

chicken soup 200kcals

veg. and rice noodles 300kcals

tiny slice of carrot cake 050kcals

hot chocolate 050kcals

Total: 1500kcals

+1 hour of exercise/weight reps and >1 hour of walking.

Thoughts: Well! For once, I seem to have been able to stick to my designated calories. I think joining the 'July challenge' has really given me a boost to put my best forward. On a non-weight-loss topic, I was chuffed to receive 5 pairs of boots that I bought online for €66 euro and whose RRP was almost €500. Amazingly they a) All fit and b) are very comfortable. That never happens to me!

@noparsnips: I'm sorry that you have that difficulty with vengeance-eating too, but it is comforting to know I'm not the only one ;) I think in this situation, logic is sought through taking myself away from irrational triggers [ie. weighing myself everyday] before it turns into a revolving door system of comfort-gluttony. Salt is a real killer for me, though--I hate feeling puffy/bloated so I do try to minimise my intake of sodium and I drink about 4 litres of water daily [I seem to _need_ to or else I feel bloated]. Thanks for stopping by!

@Free: Haha, yes--I think people like us really enjoy challenging self-imposed boundaries. I'll definitely give rotating a go this week. Tomorrow and Wednesday I'll aim for 1500 kcal days; Thursday, Friday and Saturday I'll aim for 12-1300 and then on Sunday [After weighing in!] I'm going to let myself have 2000 calories on condition that I do two hours of exercise instead of one. Thanks for the 'food for thought' :)

Day 3 of Challenge:

1 banana 100kcals

1 slice/bread 100kcals

2 fruit packs 100kcals

3xyog-covered fruit 350kcals

chocolate 250kcals

wholewheat noodles 350kcals

banana 100kcals

2 cookies 180kcals

Total: 1530

+50 minutes of walking; 45 minutes on the bike and 25 minutes of yoga and weight resistence.

Thoughts: I feel good today! I stuck to my calories and I got a very productive work-out in. I think the July challenge is the driving force here :) That bloated tight-pants feeling is already starting to diminish and my skin is soft from working out. I can't complain!
