1st post, looking for advice, new to weights

Hi,
Today I start my weight training but I need some advice. I work out at the recreation center at school so there isnt much in the form of a trainer or guide to get me started so I thought I would see what I can find out here.
My main goal is to lose fat and tone up. I'm not obese by any means, I'm around 190 and 6'0" but not in shape. I used to play racquetball 4 times a week and was much leaner but classes kept me from playing the past 6 months so I've gone quite soft.

Anyway, heres what I'm thinking of scheduling for myself and I would like advice on whether its a good plan or not.

Mondays:
Back and Shoulders
Tuesdays:
Chest and Legs
Wednesdays:
Upper Arms
Thursdays:
Chest and Legs
Friday:
Back and Shoulders (maybe-depends on soreness)

I plan on running three times a week, Tues, Thurs, and Saturday mornings for 3-4 miles to start.

I appreciate anyone reading all this and would greatly appreciate any and all advice, good or bad :D

thanks!

Some quick thoughts for you. (Keep in mind most people build differently and results always vary from person to person so experiment from the great advice all posters here are sure to offer.)

A couple common muscle pairing options are:
- Push/Pull groups in one session (Chest/Back, Bi/Tri)
- Major group/minor group (Chest/Tris, Back/Bis

A couple splits would look like this:
Day 1: Chest/Back
Day 2: Legs/Abs
Day 3: Rest
Day 4: Bis/Tris
Day 5: Rest
Day 6: Shoulders

or

Day 1: Chest/Tris
Day 2: Legs/Abs
Day 3: Rest
Day 4: Back/Bis
Day 5: Shoulders
Day 6: Usually a free day I work on Olympic lifts, new exercises I would like to include in future routines, or areas I feel need extra work (usually abs)
Day 7: Rest

I don't know if you plan on training on the weekend I noticed you plan on running but don't know how much time you intend to schedule on Saturday.

If you want a 5 day split move your back day to a separate day by itself.

Day 1 doesn't necessarily mean Monday you can arrange these to your needs. These are splits I have used and had success with.

Good luck with your training goals,
DM
