130lb Journey Down the Scale

Hrm that's really strange... I'm 289lb and 5"6.... Maybe because I'm a higher weight and slightly taller than you? Go to Calorieking.com.au and see what you get, coz that's where I plug in my information. I'd be interested to see what you get.

I work out your BMR to be around 2115.58 assuming sedentary lifestyle which is sort of the base that would put maintenance at roughly 2538 calories so 2000 is probably about right as a starting point to loose. remember all of this is theory as everybody has different metabolisms and nobody can track calorie intake and calories burned through exercise exactly unless it is a medical study so once you have an estimated base it becomes trial and error from that point onwards as far as calorie intake goes.

It says 2350 to maintain. Take 500 away to lose a lb a week, that would be 1850. I eat between 1450 and 1600. I'm where I should be. :)

Ninja - I guess being in deficit of 1000 calories is better than being in deficit of 500 calories because you'll lose faster. At the moment on the Scarsdale diet I'm eating between 1000 - 1600 calories a day most days (maybe over on a heavy meat day), which is probably why I'm losing so much.

I weighed in yesterday morning to find I'd lost 4.1kg in a week :) This morning I weighed myself again and I lost another 300g despite a slip up while going out last night. I ate a bit of stuff I shouldn't have, but I still lost and I'm fully back on the wagon. I'd like to lose another 3.2kg this week if I can. I'm going to be starting exercising on Monday, and will be doing it for at least 14 days straight as a little challenge to myself. I'd like to see how much weight I can lose by working out for 20 - 45 minutes every day. Some days I will take it easy if I am particularly sore, but I will still work out. I will be doing a mixture of cycling, swimming, rowing machines, walking and weights, mixing it up on various days. I will also try doing some circuit classes. I'm very limited at the moment because I have a calf problem that will apparently go away as I lose weight. I've been to physio for it, but nothing so far has worked :( If anyone has any suggestions on what else I can do with this limitation I'd be happy to hear it, coz the cycling/walking/swimming routine gets a bit boring.

Woot! I lost another 900g this morning and I'm back into the 120s!!!!!! 129.9kg to be exact! I'm so stoked with that. Hoping I'll get down to 127.7kg by the end of the week. That number is where I started my previous weight loss journey, and I lost 12kg from that, but gained it all back (and plus some obviously) because of my depression/bipolar.

aussiegal, what is this diet exactly?!?! How are you dropping MULTIPLE pounds over night?!?!

I'm curious to know what your plan is, that's all! please share! =)

It's the Scarsdale Medical Diet, a low carb diet formed in the 70s/80s by a doctor to help heart patients lose weight. It's only meant to be done for 2 weeks at a time (2 weeks on, 2 weeks off), but its apparently guaranteed to help you lose up to 22lb (10kg) in that time.

Here's a link to the actual diet:

It's based on the idea of Ketosis, which apparently helps you burn fat quicker. I don't fully understand the concept, but hey, it works! Its apparently dangerous to stay on it too long because it cuts out a lot of good fats, and plus you need carbs to survive. But I think I will keep up with the low carb thing.

Went to the gym again today, did 20 mins of walking 1.5km. Getting faster! I also worked out a weights program with one of the gym instructors, so I'm going to start that tomorrow, mixed in with some cardio. Will do it Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and give myself weekends to rest from the weights, but I will do cardio - 1 hour of aquarobics and 30mins of my usual walking/cycling routine.

Did really well with food today, despite the urge to binge eat. I'm working with a psychiatrist who's trying to help me to learn not to react when I get the urge to binge, so far I've had the urge twice since being on this diet, and both times I've overcome it! Yay! I feel like I'm making good progress :)

I don't know what's going on with this stupid weight loss. Yesterday I gained 300g, today I lost 400g so I'm back to 129.8kg. I've lost a total of 100g in 2 days... even though I've been exercising more and eating less! I'm getting a bit frustrated to be honest. I know I've lost HEAPS in the last week and a half, but I was hoping for so much more. I think perhaps its because I'm not eating enough... but anyway I'm pissed off...

aussie girl, when you go into the gym next see if you can organise for your bodyfat % to be tested, using calipers if possible (in Aus this is something we are trained to do) it will give you a good idea of where you are with your bodyfat and over time with further measurements each month. you will then be able to see if it is fat you are loosing even if your weight is not dropping.

Trus, I don't think my gym offers that service, but I might be able to do it at the doctors. I'll have to see. It'd be interesting at the very least. I need to measure myself really, but I can't find my measuring tape!

I've decided to skip the gym today and just go as often as possible until I can work up to 14 days straight. I'm so exhausted today I feel horrible, just like I want to sleep and not leave the house at all.

Just ended up going to the gym anyways and did my strength training workout. Taking it easy tomorrow with Aquarobics.

Lost another 200g this morning. What is DOMS? Does it affect your weigh in at all? Does it happen after a weight training session?

DOMS is Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness and happens 1-2 days after an exercise session you may not be used to, eg a new weight training program or working at a harder intensity. Bad DOMS can last for 2-3 days or so and you will retain fluid in your muscles during the healing process which may show on the scales as a gain but will go away when your no longer sore.

Ok, so the two weeks of the Scarsdale diet are finished and I lost 5.2kg, or 11.46lb! That's pretty good, despite the fact that I was lighter, but oh well! Back to normal healthy eating and calorie counting :)
