Hypertrophy vs. Tone

Hey guys, I have a question/concern: I´m 24, I´ve been lifting since I was 18, always doing volume (low reps, high weight) I´m fairly big now. My friend started working out only about a year ago doing mainly muscle tone exercises, he is smaller than me but he bit me at arm wrestling, I really had no chance against him. Why do you think this happened???
I´m very disappointed, I heard that arm wrestling is really more than just strenght and it has some technique...what do you guys think?
Thanks a lot

There's a difference between muscle size and muscle strength. Muscle size is usually accompanied by strength, but it's not always necessarily true the other way around. Just look at Olympic lifters. They're not exactly the body-builder types.

Also, your friend may have more muscular endurance as well, allowing him to work his muscles longer than you before fatiguing.

And there are definitely different ways for training for hypertrophy, strength, and endurance.

Thank you so much for the explanation Jrahien. Could anyone give a good example of a strength workout as opposed to volume?
Cheers
