horse flies

what to do with horse flies? any homemade substances? i know horse flies don't like petroleum but it evaporates quite quickly.

tnx in advance

don't use any scented lotion, soaps or shampoos. They love that stuff.

Oh yeah and don't breathe either because they are attracted to Carbon Dioxide. :sport:

Deep Woods Off is the best product to use for them. Or something comparable with real deet in it.

Bathe in citronella. Works like a charm. ;)

Or, y'know, use a bug spray with enough deet to give your grandchildren cancer.

Are you in the woods? Just wear long paths and long sleeves shirt. As Kraken stated, don't bathe, shave, or put on any sort of creams or lotion at any point in time during your stay in the woods. He's big foot, so he would know about these things.

i run in beautiful woods 1x/ week. it's summer so it's hot to run in long trousers and shirt. i help myself with a thin stick and as soon as i noticed it on the skin i kill it with rapid beatings. but the skin becomes all red. :(

can't post url yet. google it. horse fly doesn't bring diseases but it's painful. it's gray/ blue and cca 2cm big. you can kill it with a well targeted, hard hand slap or scary it away with a stick. i've been around horses -> it will rarely attack you but when i does you'll feel it.

damn it
now i see i was attacked by a different fly -> Lipoptena cervi. it is flat so you can't kill it with hand slap. you have to grab it and with nails cut its head (like killing a tick). it is very popular around horses too. much smaller than a horse fly but it's a poor flyer so running is a good option. but once it lands on your skin or clothes it is battle

Horsefly bait

Horseflies hunt by sight! Run faster!!
I carry a bandana and wave it around like a horse tail, works for me.

Happy trails!!

last time I was up north, in Calgary actually was the last time I got bit- and they suck. I do not miss horse flies.

I have no advice,,,,

Move to Florida- that's what I did.

buy a nice looking frog or frogs, and a leash. put it on your shoulder = problem solved + funny store
P.S. suggest not the poisionious ones

for temp relif while in the woods take a conifer tree branch an, slap it from front to back alternating each side of your neck,, the sound the branch makes and the hazard of flying into that NET of twigs will get them to give you a big distance.. this is what i did when I was doing power line clear-n
