Want to get bigger

Hey guys, I'm new here. I was hoping you guys could give me some tips.

I'm 16 years old. 5'11", 140 lbs.

I'm a skinny guy. I really want to get bigger because I'm self conscious about it. Now over the summer, I went to the gym every other day and lifted for an hour, doing machines assigned by an instructor. I didn't get any bigger :|.

How would you guys suggest I get bigger, without going to the gym (Don't have time). I was thinking about trying some of that protein powder, but I don't know which kind. I'll happily do Push ups and stuff at home. I eat a normal amount, but I have a fast metabolism so I don't gain any weight from that. To the point, I just want bigger arms and possibly chest.

The most important thing is diet. You have to take in more calories that you use to gain weight. Read the stickies in the nutrition forum. That will get you started.
For your muscles to get bigger they have to be challenged. I would say go to the gym, but if your not going to do that you can find full body bodyweight exercises on the web to do.

In order to get bigger you need to eat more. You need to eat so that you gain weight. Calculate your caloric maintenance level, and eat 500 to 1000 cals more than that. Diet is the key.
Also stick to compound lifts like deadlift, squat, bench press, pull ups and similar exercise. Those stimulate muscle growth throughtout the whole body. Whey protein doesn't contain a lot of calories, so I'm not convinced that it will help you gain weight. If you wanna buy a supplement buy a weight gainer. Most weight gainers contain whey protein plus some carbs.
Also, you can make your own weight gainer. Buy some whey protein and add some oats into it, as well as natty PB and/or flax oil.

Well I can't really eat more. For Breakfast I eat a bowl of cereal every morning. For lunch at school, I eat a Chick Fil A sandwich, 2 Bags of Baked Cheetos, and a Gatorade. Dinner is different usually, but when I work I usually eat a hamburger or a 1/4 pound of BBQ. Sometimes though, when I don't work, I'll just eat cereal for dinner or something like that. Could that be affecting it that much?

Voj, what supplement would you recommend?

supplements- supplement your diet. They don't take the place of a good diet. Yes it's that important, diet is everything. I really wouldn't recommend any supplements until your diet gets cleaned up.
 
Just man up and eat more. Buy some powerbars and eat two at school and then drink milk instead of water. After dinner, wait an hour or two then have dinner all over again, this is how to gain weight.
If you are like me (been skinny forever) then you will really need to eat. Count your calories.
 
Cheetos, Chik Filet, Burgers? LOL

Theres no magic pill. Hard work and good diet is the only thing that will get you there.
 
You basically have 3 options:

1. Eat more and don't lift = gain a little bit of muscle and a lot of fat
2. Eat more and lift = gain a lot of muscle and a little bit of fat
3. Eat the same as you are now = never get bigger no matter what you do
 
I don't understand what you mean by you can't eat more. Are you saying you're not willing to get up earlier to cook breakfast and pack some extra meals for the day?

No time to go to the gym? You don't have 4-6 hours a week to spare?
 
I imagine that this guy is assuming that because he eats until he is full, that he is eating as much as humanly possible.

Your diet is severely lacking. You're going to have to educate yourself on a proper diet before you'll be able to bulk up.

I know what it is like to be skinny and self-concious about it. When I was in high school I was 6' and 130lbs. By eating (a lot) and lifting heavy, I was able to reach 165lbs (yeah, I'm still skinny, but I don't look like I'm starving anymore). But, it took time, effort, and most of all - dedication. It's not easy by any stretch of the imagination, but in my opinion, the results are well worth it.

What I meant was in the morning, all I have to eat is cereal. Should I cook eggs or something? At lunch, what other choices do I have... I'm at school. For dinner my Mom never cooks so I'm on my own. Ok, fine, when I leave for work in a minute I'll eat 2 Large BBQ sandwiches. Enough?

(Also, I'm fine with just gaining fat)

I'll take your advice dicks, you don't have to make fun of me. How many times a week should I go to the gym? Like I said, during the summer and went every other day and it didn't do sh*t.
