Rugby

Ok, so I signed up for Rugby. IT's a spring sport. Meaning my year will go...

Fall - Powerlifting
Winter - Powerlifting / Wrestling
Spring - Powerlifting / Rugby / Track (hopefully..I hope my throwing coach will let me still do T+F)

What do you guys think about Rugby? Do you think that I should be doing a sport like Rugby while doing Powerlifting? The powerlifting meets are in the spring, so me powerlifting during wretling isn't really a problem. I just don't know if I should do it because I don't want it to effect my numbers too much.

If i may....Rugby is one of the worst mainstream sports in the world...Right behind Baseball and american football. Does not appeal to me at all and this is coming from someone who is 100% Australian!

What position would you be playing? The physical demands are very different depending on position.

And Streamline - Can't you be executed for blasphemy in Australia because of what you just said? ;)

Well I have played rugby I played fullback scrum half and centre and now I agree with streamline worst game ever invented. Play Soccer!

If there'd been more hot lesbo action and fewer studs rammed in my face by 30 stone props I might have stuck with the game longer ;)

Well, I'm gonna do it no matter what. The good thing is, it is a "club" because not many schools in the area have Rugby as a sport. So I think not only is it going to be intermural, but also ellective as well. I think you can just show up when you please to? So if theres some days I wanna train rather than play rugby, I will. Because in the end, Powerlifting will be first for me, no matter what. I care more about my state and new england championships than a game of rugby =]

The funny thing about it, we have about 1,000 guys (yes, all guys school -_-) at my school. The same day it was posted up there, there were over 100 signatures. So 1/10th of the school wants to play lol. Thats prob 4th most behind Football, XC, and Track.

Right behind Baseball and american football.

:eek2: Take that back! lol. Damn Aussies =P

I don't really know much about Rugby, I just have a feeling its a hardcore sport where theres no armor, just basically a beatdown of the other team lol. I hope it doesn't turn out sucking =\

Yeah it looks great! But one thing I really wouldn't like about - tons of injuries! It really is too much of a contact sport to be played safely without protective gear imo.

And damn, those guys need to learn some proper fall technique! Trying to stop the fall with the elbow like most of them do is a very effective way to dislocate or break something.

At a risk of sounding arrogant I dont think anyone can get a true Idea of what rugby is really like until they come to somewhere like New Zealand or Australia where Rugby is part of everyday life. To the extent where people spend every week night at the rugby club.

Its probably like baseball or football is in the US

Yeah. Except baseball. You see pickup games of football all over the place where I live.

After practice Monday-Thursday. I have a game Friday. then on Saturday I play more football when I finnally get a break...

Yeah baseball is pretty much like that, especially here (BOSTON!! YEAH!) We're known for our dedication, we have sold out every game since the beginning of 2003.

Football, we're just as beastly. The New England Patriots...it's crazy up here with sports. Like you said jman, you see football everywhere. I play pickup games with friends at least 2 weekends a month just about. We don't do pickup baseball, we do pickup wiffleball all the time too.

hahahaha, not quite lol.

Funny that, coz im a soccer boy too. Never played rugby, altho about every person i don't kno thinks that i do play it.

Merciless - If it's any consolation, i think baseball ranks in the bearable category lol but i deffinately can't sit thru a game of american football.

Oh wow, I'm surprised you can bear baseball more than football. I get bored at baseball somtimes, it's true. But Football...I can't stop watching (besides the mass amounts of commercials). It's such a warrior sport - put on your armor, line up, beat the **** outta eachother and outwhit the oppoenent, etc. such a good game...

it's funny how the phoenix captain is an Australian lol. Oh well, at least they're better than the knights were...but then again, how hard is that? :p

I think football is one of those sports i can watch highlights of but can't watch an entire game. Too much stopping and starting in the game. That's why i prefer rugby league and AFL over union and american football. It's continuous and (in the case of AFL), fast and entertaining. Soccer always wins over all the football codes though.

Rugby is a beast of a sport. Jesus christ, you can literally nail each other, like 6 at once and its allowed. You have a grudge against some guy, you play against his rugby team. Plus there is nothing more fun than handing someone off or dump tackling them. It's quality.

My god its been a while since I posted on here.

Rugby can be punishing, let me just say - if you're going to play it, make sure your heart is in it, if not, you'll get hurt and hurt quickly.

Woodt - I'm guessing you're not a forward? If you were, you wouldnt be naming handing someone off as one of the fun parts, I love to find some kid stuck the wrong side of the ball and give him imprints of my boots on his back, even more fun if hes trapped as he cant get away. They're trying to outlaw it now, but its still here at the moment.

Its different to football because you will make a lot more 1v1 tackles, but similar in the respect that territory and possession are everything (whereas say in Soccer, territory counts for very little). Any questions - just ask.

What position are you playing Merc?

I love rugby, i played it since 1996 upto around early 2006 and then i quit.

Main positions were wing and centre due to my unbelievable speed ;) hehe

As i got older tho, i started filling out and was moved to second row sometimes which is 10x a harder job!

Im thinking of going back to rugby, i love it! :):):):)
