Alligatorob's Diary

Wow, a trip to California! How nice - will you get to sight see a bit or no?

About 20 years ago I was on a business trip in rural Russia, at one hotel breakfast was raw herring, onions, toast and vodka. I think the vodka was probably to make the raw herring look edible.
You can wake me up in the middle of the night for fresh toast with herring and onions but I'll pass on the vodka unless I have a cold.

Yesterday was a good day. I didn't ride the bike, I did a lot of work around the house and was pretty tired by the end of the day, so still got some exercise. I started 2 beers, but feel asleep before drinking much of the second, so am posting this morning. Guess I am turning into a cheep drunk.

Its the end of daylight savings time here this morning, so by the clock I am real early. I never understood daylight savings time, if I were going to shift the clock it would be in winter to get an extra hour of light in the afternoon when its more needed. In summer it gives you an hour of light you don't need. Oh well, "they" didn't ask me when they set this up.

Ate a few more calories yesterday than usual, but not many. I'm ok.

The Samalas volcano erupted in 1257. Samalas was mostly destroyed and part of what is now called the Rinjani volcanic complex in Indonesia. Locally the eruption created much death and destruction locally including the city of Pamatan, capital of the Lombok kingdom at the time. Written records, on palm leaves, of the eruption survive. As a result of ash and gases the eruption had worldwide impacts causing cooling and crop failure in Europe. Possibly contributing to the beginning of the Little Ice Age, a period of a couple of hundred years of low temperatures and long cold winters. Perhaps resulting in events such as the abandonment of the Viking settlements in Greenland.

Not really, its just a quick in and out business trip. I get to California a lot, probably 2 or 3 times a month before I started retiring, less now. One day we will do a driving vacation and see the sites. I lived in northern California for about 3 years back in the 80s, so I know it at least somewhat. A great place to visit.

Rob remember this time to pack some snacks as you went hungry last business trip . Even your grapenuts etc .
I heard from my friend in Kentucky this morning . She is starting to decorate for Christmas . Super early !!
We changed last week for day light savings I totally agree with you . It gets dark so early now .

Packing some snacks with you this time is a good idea. Petal beat me to it. Some raw almonds maybe or some of that jerky.

I love driving holidays. With scattered family in different states, we do a fair amount of driving for family reasons, anyway, and I really like the part of it which involves stopping a night or so on the way, in small motels or caravan parks, and just seeing what the little towns offer - local museums, parks, riverside walks, smalltown bakeries.... :)

It was a good day, but an exhausting one. I've been working on some shelves in the garage, a long put off project. I worked at it non-stop from about 8 am to 6 pm, only took off a few minutes for lunch. I did not get in a bike ride, but probably did a lot more exercising. The good thing is that I know I would not have been able to put in a day like today, on my feet for 10 hours a few months ago, the weight loss and cycling made it possible, I feel good about that. The bad thing is I did not eat enough, tomorrow will be back to my more normal routine.

Petal and Cate, I will pack snacks this time, to avoid being hostage to eating airport/airplane food or starve. Cate, I have my jerky!

just make sure you follow the California Interstate Highway Driving Guidelines... Speed Limit = posted +15 mph
I know that's true! Going the speed limit on the freeway can be dangerous, high risk of being rear-ended.

I love driving holidays.
I have never really done one, all of my long distance drives were just to get somewhere, long days of driving, little fun. We are talking about a month long drive back to Florida this winter, and will try to do just what you say "seeing what the little towns offer - local museums, parks, riverside walks, smalltown bakeries.... " may skip the bakeries however. Probably look up friends and relatives along the way too.

In 886 the Vikings attacked Paris besieging the City for almost a year. Finally Charles the Fat arrived with his army to rescue Paris. The siege sounds a lot like the one described in the History channel version, and may have provided some of the details, though it appears the History channel show may have been based on an earlier siege. Perhaps the 845 siege lead by Reinherus, sounds like of like Ragnar. I looked up Charles the Fat and it turns out he didn't get the nickname until about 300 years after he died. No record exists of what Charles looked like, fat or not.

Another ruler with a fat nickname? Why you could almost start to think that once upon a time only rich people would get fat... :p

"Resolution for Error Code 886. Remove the batteries for at least 5 full minutes. Reinsert two D cell batteries that have a good charge. Reset the time and date ... "
886- nowhere near enough calories! :svengo: Reset, Rob, reset :)

That's a brilliant thing and it just shows how amazing the human body is. With a little bit of practice and training, you can get strong and build stamina, and get yourself back to feeling your best.

I occasionally go in that zone sometimes Rob plus I think my appetite is not so big . But yes you do need more calories as your body will thing it’s in starving mode and might hold on to weight . I’m not entirely sure if this is true so I stand corrected if so .

Just did my 40 laps, it felt good. I was tempted to keep going, but had decided to stick to 40 for now and so I did.

It was a nice day about 50 F, 10 C, sunny, with little wind. I didn't need to put my winter gear on.

Petal, I think you are probably right, if you eat fewer calories you body slows down and burns fewer. I am already doing better today than yesterday, calorie wise. Its never very hard to eat more calories.

..., if you eat fewer calories you body slows down and burns fewer. ...
this isn't always true. you have to agree that your fat stores can provide energy. where the problem come up is whether or not you can get to those stores. insulin is the "traffic cop" that signals whether the body stores fat (high levels) or opens the body up to burning fat (low levels)
