Milestones (Amy's diary)

I also have soft floppy upper arms. :( I don't suppose anyone has a magic cure for those?
Wish I did, and I am seeing the same thing on my arms. I am losing weight faster than skin. When I see my arms I like to think about how much better it is to have the flop than to have them filled with fat, it helps a little. Remember what those "half-filled flourbags" used to be filled with! I suspect this is much more noticeable to you than to anyone else and with time it should get better. Overall I am sure you are looking better!

You tube have little clips on how to use weights for arms .
Thanks, Petal! I've gone to Youtube, and found a clip promising me that if I do an exercise faithfully for four weeks (curling my arms up in front towards my shoulders and then exending the arm up above my head and then down again and repeat etc) that I will absolutely guaranteed see a difference. So... two days down and 26 days to go! I also for good measure (heh!) measured around the swaggiest bit of upper arm, so I'll have the tape to tell me how I'm going, as well as my eyes.

Thanks, Rob! :p And yes, I think I am!

And: public service announcement!
I have found a way to make the tape measure numbers go down more quickly! I'm not going to be aiming for 35 inches round the waist any more, I'm measuring in centimetres - and going down one in centimetres is bound to be quicker than going down one (or ahem! one and a half) in inches. There! I feel much more cheerful about the tape measure now! :D

I like that! Also a good reason to use a scale in pounds rather than kilograms, its a lot easier to lose a pound than a kilogram!

It´s clear why your diary is called what it´s called :D

Ah I knew I joined this forum for a reason - excellent idea :D

That's funny, Amy :D
I have been sorely tempted to start thinking of any weight-loss in pounds rather than kilos, but unfortunately, when I convert my weight to pounds I horrify myself. Ah, denial :blush5:

Sounds like a classic curl to press or an Arnold press, please take care following YouTube videos for weight training, many of them have terrible form. however, it is not a magic exercise lol and it will not target a saggy tricep.

I looked for both of these (having lost the original site I looked at two days ago) and yes, I think it's a classic curl, except ending by straightening the arms up high. The Arnold press seems to have the arms out to the side more.
Thank you for giving an expert view! I'd still like to give it a go for the four weeks. Do you advise against that? I'm not using heavy weights - in fact, I'm using baked bean cans. :blush5:

Rats! I would so much love there to be a magic exercise! Oh well, I'll just have to live with being saggy for a bit longer, I guess.

... I should also take your advice and do those exercises . How long do they take ?
Alas, Petal! See above - Tru, who knows what she's talking about, says it won't magically fix my saggy underarms - rats! :(
Still, to answer your question, what I've been doing has only been taking about five minutes a day - but I wasn't thinking of it as "advice"! I'm not knowledgeable about any of this, so in no position to give advice! I was just sharing what I was doing, to see how it works out - for fun, as much as for anything else.

If you have the shoulder mobility, it is not going to hurt.

One thing to mention that is often not included in these videos is to keep good posture during the movement. Place feet shoulder width apart slightly angled out and think of yourself screwing your feet into the floor, this will tighten your Glutes and give a stable base for the exercise. Then take a nice breath through your nose, exhale through the mouth with a bit of force, you should feel your rib tighten down flat and your deep core tighten. This is the start position before you begin to lift. Strong and stable keeping your spine safe as you lift overhead.

Thank you very much indeed! I will do exactly that!

It is one of the things that is a pet peeve of tutors at uni, that most PTs will tell you to engage your core or tighten your core when most people don't actually know how to do it. In practical exams if we say tighten your core we will get marked down severely.

So planks don't work, arm exercises don't work, sit up don't work, I'm assuming losing weight slowly and healthily is the best way and hopefully the skin will shrink along with ? I've notice the tops of my thighs a little wrinkly now. I started some upper arm exercises last eve but only took a few mins no weights involved .

It is not as simple as don't work lol, sit-ups cause back problems, a crunch with good form is a sit-up replacement, planks are usually done very poorly and again place stress on areas that should not be stressed. Different Arm exercises will target different parts of the arm, the curl press targets the biceps and shoulder. The baggy back of arms (Triceps) need a different arm exercise.

I can highly recommend the half kneeling palloff press, Works the entire core, good for relieving/preventing back pain and in a limited way also target those saggy batwings. You don't need a gym to do them if you have bands at home and something sturdy to attach the band to.

No commentary, but does show good form

Long but good presentation of info about the plank

Thanks, Tru! I looked at the half kneeling palloff press video, just to get the idea - it took me several watchings before I could see where the bands were attached. :) I did as you suggested to get the feel of the deep core tightening - that was great, and I used it today to settle myself for the balance exercises, which I'm still doing, still at the simplest level.

You're a genius! My waist measurement is 37 in inches, going to try the old centimetre route to get me back to where I want to be. :)

The weekend! and a bit of concern rising, because of social stuff --> eating. That's tomorrow lunchtime, as so far planned, at a buffet-style restaurant but could tip over into evening as well. Wish me luck!

Meanwhile, I've been going pretty well on the weight front - so far, I'm on track to meet the four pounds in September plan, and have met a mini-goal on the way, as well. Only a little one, but every milestone counts! :)

You might stick to the salad part of the buffet and use low cal dressing like oil and vinegar. You could get seconds even to participate in the discussion and food all throughout the meal. Pre-plan what you'll say if the topic shifts to food or your selection of food. There are all sorts of interesting things about veges. :)

Great job on the weight loss progress so far! You can't go too slow btw, just so you're headed in the right direction. Looking forward to reading more about your progress, Amy.
