Milestones (Amy's diary)

Thank you LaMa I was trying to think of Prosecco earlier . Have a bottle at home I was given as a gift . Em we should do the euromillions . Might be lucky .

Thank you everyone for the champagne/prosecco tips - I was hoping to actually get to a likely shop and get some to have handy for when I next need to celebrate (ie the milestone after next!) but then my weekend got swallowed with some child-visitors - fun, but it kiboshed the shopping.

And I've just been reading on another thread about the inadequacy of both weight and BMI as measures of health/needing to lose weight, so I'm off to find the household tape-measure to see how I do. :) Trepidation!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, everybody!

Amy they recommend tape measuring in my class for inch loss too as it might not alwYs show on the scales . I have never done it but will measure my waist at some point . Have a good Sunday .

Sorry, I know absolutely nothing about any forms of alcohol, except how to catch the fresh yeasts on the window sill in the summer and make your own berry liqueur - my grandmother did that with me and we would pour it over ice cream, get all giddy, and dance to the Andrew Sisters.

I got out the tape measure, but have not been brave enough to use it yet. I'll do that this week!

Its never hard to find a reason to celebrate, just getting the bubbly can be reason enough. You have a lot of good wines to choose from in California, that is one of the things I liked about living there.

I'll give you my very non professional take on this.
  • Tracking your weight is a good metric to see that you are on track calorie wise, in the longer term anyway we all know how variable weight can be short term.
  • BMI is a general indicator of a body's condition, but as others here say its not always applicable to the individual. In my case I don't need a calculator to tell me I'm really fat, I know it. You however are not so overweight as I am.
  • Measurements are good for seeing how your body mass is distributing itself, particularly as you approach a goal weight range. I think it can help you understand any shifts from fat to muscle.
Somewhere inside I think we all know how we are doing, but have the metrics to follow and confirm is always a help. Find what works for you.

Very clever poem, I would never have thought of rhyming poet and Moet!

I found the tape measure - crap! Time to take Em's and my challenge more seriously! That used to be my hip measurement, not my waist!!! Ahhhh! (Sorry to freak out on your diary page Amy!)

Thanks, Petal - so I've got two measures to watch now - the scales and the tape-measure! I have a gloomy feeling that the tape measure will be the slower one to move, though.
Good luck with the tape measure. Hope yours is nicer than my one! :)
Thanks, Em! though as for "nicer"...
Sorry to freak out on your diary page Amy!
Freaking out along with you, Marsia! I found mine, too, after quite a hunt, and, err... yes. Say no more.

I partly agree - yes, when we're watching we know pretty much how we're doing, but if we don't watch we can (I could! I did!) gain much more weight than we are aware of, over a period of time. I certainly do find the metrics a help, though - as I do the crowd here!

Thanks for the encouragement, all!

Yeah, the worst thing is to leave it go for a bit and then realise you’re a few kilos heavier all of a sudden.

The measuring tape as a metric is extremely slow to change. I need more encouragement than that, haha!

Amy, I'm so glad you asked the question about BMI. I might not have realized for a long while that I have a marshmallow for a belly! I find that measurement is essential for me - I do not have an intuitive sense of when to stop eating, how much to eat, or what to eat anymore. So this is a great wake up call - measure all over the place!!!! (But maybe allow a little wiggle room, too!)

Ah... that measuring tape! Both Emily and 101 agree it's a s-l-o-w business waiting for the numbers on the tape to change. :(
Though I like your idea, 101, that watching the tape might give me a chance to feel like Houdini! (Probably the only way I'll ever get that feeling!) And Em, when you say, about the slow changing
I need more encouragement than that, haha!
I have to agree I love the encouragement of quick-change numbers - in fact, to make them be quick-change, I'll count in fractions (tenths) of a kilo if I have to! :blush5:

How are things going overall with your weight loss and health, Amy?
Weight loss: slow! :( I'm hoping to lose four pounds this month, which is very unambitious, I know, but will take me, if I make it, to some pre-determined milestones. So far I've lost two.
Health - well, I've got over a cold I had, which I was using as an excuse to skip exercise, so I guess I should get back to it!

It does creep on unbeknownst to us
It did! :(

Marsia - Measuring my waist was grim enough - I don't think I could live with measuring
all over the place!!!!
Yes, I have the soft marshmallow belly - and that'll have to go, according to the under-35" rule! But I also have soft floppy upper arms. :( I don't suppose anyone has a magic cure for those?

Hi Amy! When I was doing plank pose, that helped a lot for my arms. Also drumming really helped - just holding your arms up for an hour or so really helps, and with hand drumming, you build up all sorts of muscles. More practically though, probably weights and if you garden, digging and pruning and weeding are helping. (Oh, also I meant that I am going to measure my fats and calories more rigorously, not other parts of my body. Knowing how many inches I need to lose around the waist is depressing enough!).

Hi, Amy. You gals had me wondering what my last waist measurement was in inches, so I looked it up on MFP. I thought "That's not too bad" & then I saw that was almost 4 years ago  Do I dare? Not this morning, I don't. I got on the scales this morning & that was enough.

Thanks for setting me straight, Marsia! I thought it was the body, and yes, depressing!

Petal, I think my arms are shrinking, but also getting floppier or seeming floppier because of the shrinking - like a half-filled flourbag, which isn't a pleasant way to think of one's own body. :(
I'd love to take up drumming, but it doesn't fit with my situation just now - I'm thinking of tackling the upper-arm problem by trying something not terribly ambitious in the weights line.

I must get to work - I'll do more reading later!

You tube have little clips on how to use weights for arms .
