Cate's Diary

My blood pressure is quite low when I'm not overweight (last time I measured it was at 104/54) and I'm very aware that getting up quickly after squatting/kneeling/bending for a while can make me faint. If I do take care it's not a problem at all though and it's a lot healthier than high bp!

Hope you feel better today, Cate, and can take it easy until you know how the medication will affect you and have been on a consistent dose for awhile.

I'm glad you are checking about the blood pressure medicine. I have low blood pressure and can get dizzy standing up fast, and get pretty grey crystal visions in my eyesight. It sounds like a good idea to both have cell phones with you when you take a walk in the bush or walkie-talkies if you don't get reception. Hope you are feeling better!!! Huggggs!!!

From what I know of them, the blood pressure tablets basically force your body to slow down. So when you fight against it and do a lot of extra work, your body will react in the way that happened. 'No Cate, you gave me these tablets for a reason, I will not allow this, and instead, I will force you to stop.' Ergo dizziness, weakness, etc.

You do not have to be superwoman! I totally understand being active to feel good both mentally and physically, but take the rest your body needs also. More gentle stretching, gentle walks, gentle thoughts! :)

Thank you LaMa, Petal, Rob, Marsia & Em :blush5:
I read up on the medication information & have learned a valuable lesson from yesterday. I overdid it. I know I did. It was stupid. My body needs time to adjust to the new meds & I must let it. I even 'fessed up to G this morning & I know he'll keep an eye on me now. We'll both make sure we have our phones with us all the time, but I have parked my snippers & will leave them behind next time. I'll walk but not bend/stand/walk. He said "were you cutting ferns"? & I said "a few" & he said, "a few hundred probably". Not that many, but point taken. I overdid it.
I'm feeling fine this morning & have taken the extra meds & will be very careful every time I get up. We're going to go into town & will all go for a walk around the river. We have the kids until 6 pm.

...felt so dizzy that I thought I was going to faint. I stayed there for about 10 mins & then started to very slowly walk my way back to the house.... I feel fine now but that was a bit scary...
That's very scary. :(
I've just read through, and know you're feeling better and will be careful, but... yeah, scary. It feels silly to say "look after yourself" because of course you will - self-care is not selfish, as a wise woman once said - but still... look after yourself.

On a happier note, I love the gorgeous years of mutual caring and knowledge which show in this:
... He said "were you cutting ferns"? & I said "a few" & he said, "a few hundred probably".
:beating:

(And yes, yes, for Weis bars, any and all, but mango would have to be one of the best!)

Cate
I think we learn lots of lessons about what our bodies can and can't take . Think you now know for now to leave those snippers at home . Your river walk sounds great with the kids . Enjoy

Thanks, Amy. I think in all of us there's that mix of being logical, yet railing against reality. Life is such a juggle. I really want to be active & it goes against the grain taking things easy, but I will.
I love the gorgeous years of mutual caring and knowledge which show in this:
You're sweet.
We bought some Weiss mango & macadamia nut bars. I find it easier to have these in the freezer to have if I crave something sweet as one is enough & they are still not very high in calories.
Hi, Marsia. The river walk was pleasant but absolutely freezing. E & I went for a walk & G chatted to someone we know who has just had a major op & C watched ducks & other birds diving for worms or bugs. We didn't stay long, but I got my steps in & the day was nice.
You're right, LaMa. I think he would have worried about me more if I hadn't confessed to overdoing it.
Thanks, Petal. It was nice & yes, the snippers will be staying at home for now. I really don't know if I'll be staying on these new meds, but if I am hopefully, my body will adjust. I don't want to wrap myself up in cotton wool.

I have had 2 days off counting all of my calories & am starting again today. I know I didn't overeat, but I felt more relaxed about it all. I didn't feel dizzy walking yesterday so will chance a walk down to the bush today with no bending/standing up. Just a walk. It would be better if it was level walking but I'll take it slowly & carefully.
BF this morning was oats, chia seeds, soaked overnight in low-fat milk, blackberries & raspberries, 3 prunes (b/c I need them :( ) with a dollop of Greek, no-fat yoghurt(disgusting  ) Cals 433
Lunch is going to be a salad & dinner will be a beef stir-fry, with lots of veg.
Edit: I had asked G to get me some no-fat or low-fat Jalna yoghurt a couple of weeks ago & he bought me the full-fat one, which is delicious, but made me crabby as I'm trying to cut down on saturated fat. I went into the supermarket the other day & bought some of the no-fat one & it is gross. I told him so this morning. Next time I will go back to having half the quantity of the delicious one!

Your two days off sound just right for the needs of the time! Have a wonderful walk. :)

Irrelevant ramble follow: I love full-fat Greek yoghurt (I'm not sure what makes a yoghurt "Greek", but the kind I like is so labelled). I use it fairly sparingly, but I think more or less as you use it, ie adding a dollop to fruit etc, rather than eating a bowlful! I also use it to make raita with curries, or tsatziki with falafel.

Thanks, Amy.
You made me curious about "Greek" yoghurt-
"Greek yoghurt is made by fermenting milk with live bacteria cultures. ... Greek-style yoghurt, on the other hand, has not been strained and often contains artificial thickeners such as gelatin and gum which are added to produce the same creamy texture, but with a longer shelf life. " and
The difference between natural yoghurt & Greek yoghurt
"Greek yoghurt is higher in fat than standard plain or natural yogurt and is considerably thicker. It generally has around 8 to 10 per cent fat compared to 4 per cent for normal plain yoghurt. ... You get a consistency similar to sour cream or mascarpone while retaining yoghurt's distinctive sour taste".
I think the answer is fat. I know I much prefer the full-fat Greek yoghurt, so, will keep just adding a dollop here & there & maybe have some low-fat fruit added yoghurt for when I really feel like just having yoghurt & fruit.
Time to get moving!

Time to get moving, you say - which means I should, too!

I make my "Greek yoghurt" from (mostly) Hansell's yoghurt powder, or else Esiyo. I'll check the packet for thickeners!

Great that you're getting back out. From your profile pic, it looks like you have some pretty good hiking shoes for uneven ground. Hope you enjoy!

Hi, Amy, Marsia & Rob :)
I must admit I don't feel great, but hopefully, the light-headedness & shortness of breath are just a temporary thing until my body adjusts to the new meds. A friend said her cardio only had her on them for one month to get her BP down quickly & then he stopped them. Fingers crossed.
My hiking boots are Scarpas, Rob & I have had them for about 10 years I reckon, so they are well & truly broken in. They are perfect for up where I live. Lacing them up really puts me in a good mental place.
I did some kitchen rearranging & felt very light-headed. After lunch (stir-fried beef & veg- YUM) G said "Do you want to go for a walk? I'll come with you." We didn't go far, but it was nice. So long as he always has his phone on him I'll be right on my own. He led & it was a rougher, more uneven way than I would usually go, with lots of small rocks, twigs & bracken fern in the way. Now that I have basically cleared a track down through our bush I should be right to be not wanting to bend over & clear as I go. I'll start taking a pole/walking stick that I can use to flick things, like sticks off the track. A little earth mover would be nice. Actually, I do have one of those ancient (antique) walking sticks that can open out to be a seat. Maybe I'll take that to sit on if I get dizzy. I don't fancy sitting on the ground. a) I would have to get up again & b) there might be leeches or ants!
Anyhow. I'm glad I went for a walk. I may not get my steps in today unless I go for another walk, which I might.
