walking to burn fat

Hey, well I'm sure this has been brought up many times before but I couldnt find exactally what I was looking for. Anyways I am 16..about 5'7 and 140lbs. I am not really overweight but would like to burn off a bit of a pop belly and double chin. We just got a treadmill and I looked through all the programs and all that and thought for me to get the best results I would go 30mins two times a day on the "fat burn" program which keeps a constant speed (Default:2mph but I increased to 3.5mph) and varies the elevation. I figured this would get me the best results but what do you think. Again, my focus is just burning some fat especially a bit of a popbelly and little bit of "baby fat" on my face.

First of all....the " fat burn " zones you see on most cardio equipment are largely a myth.

If you want to lose fat, you have to make sure you've got a good handle on your calorie needs - BMR, etc. etc.

No fat reduction program is optimum......without the Mighty calorie understood.

Will walking assist with Fat Loss........lets see:

Walking involves working the body and thus: Burns calories.

If "hypothically" you are at your MT line, and the walking creates a deficit, one in this example is on the way toward tissue loss.

If the person is using the diet to create the deficit "first" and then allowing the walking exercise to create an additional deficit: this too creates an environment for tissue loss.


So yes, it can help.

I'm not going to get into the whole calories/bmr/fat burning thing since I think the above answered that.

Any time you are doing cardio, the best way to determine if you are actually working out or not is by your heart rate. If it isn't hitting your target zone, then you are not working out hard enough.

Here's how you compute your heart rate (hr):

0) Get your resting heart rate
1) 220 - your age = max heart rate
2) (Max Heart Rate - Rest Heart Rate) x Intensity + Rest. Heart Rate = Training Heart Rate

Intensity = .60 - .70 for average intensity.

For example, me:
Resting rate let's say 85
220 - 23 = 197 max rate
(197 - 85) x .60 + 85 = 152 bpm

So I should aim for a heart rate of 152 bpm to actually work out.

Indeed walking burn calories.... but why walk when you can actually work out. You do enough walking anyways.
