Cate's Diary

I love the way the air smells in the fall, especially. We are socked in with fog all summer, so get a nice bunch of sun and warmth in the fall, so I get a lot of gardening done now, which I love. Happy September!!! And happy biking!

Thanks, Em.
Thanks, LaMa.
Thanks, Marsia. Fog all Summer? How different to here that is! We get fog overnight in Winter sometimes, but never in Summer.
Weight this morning- same. I did not lose one solitary kilo in August. I have lost 1.5 kg since I started doing 5:2 on the 15th July & had lost 1 kg in the 2 weeks before that. Apparently, this is not uncommon on 5:2. It is slow to go. I have to not be discouraged by the slowness of it as I feel really good. I may not weigh again for a couple of weeks.
It's a sunny day for the first day of Spring & I think I will go to the market, which is only on the first Sat of each month.
September plan-
Mandatory-

Stick with 5:2,
Min 2.5 km on the bike every day, unless away or playing golf,
10 squats every day.
Optional, but preferable- (I'm trying not to nag myself :) )
Do my stretches & other exercises given to me by the EP 3 days a week.
Do 5-10 km on my bike 3 days a week.
Lose at least one kilo!
Happy September everyone! xoxo

Davis used to get ground fog (they called it tuley fog) in the winter - dangerous to drive in, but beautiful. We get summer fog because the warm earth and cold ocean air meet.

I'll join you in doing enough exercise to lose at least 2 pounds this month!

We often get "Hochnebel" all through November and December - an even layer of cloud/fog hanging maybe 200m above the ground. Not a single beam of sunshine all day, sometimes for 6 weeks straight.
I like the sound of your September plan!

I really dislike fog as it affects my Asthma badly. So does heavy humidity in Summer, which we get very little of. Thanks for joining me. I haven't lost any enthusiasm for losing thank goodness!

Six weeks straight of fog?!!! I really could not cope with that. I just realised the significance of your parents' visit LaMa :D :beating: How wonderful! xoxo

Have been to the market & bought a present for my sister, who's birthday is next Sunday, the 9th of September. I hadn't planned on buying her anything but saw a Nepalese shawl in a beautiful dark green, which is her favourite colour. I couldn't resist!
I then went to the supermarket, unfortunately as even with my mask on I got affected. I have only just stopped itching. I didn't go down the laundry aisle but had to go past it.
I have done my bare minimum of 2.5 km on the bike & 10 squats only. My feet are actually swelling up. Eek.
I think I will have to leave the supermarket shopping to G from now on. It's toxic in there!

LaMa, I love fog and all things to do with water (being a water baby in a place where it only rains in the winter). I love the name they gave your type of fog "Hochnebel", like low hanging clouds named by some scientist who wanted his name as a cloud.

Cate, the dark green shawl sounds lovely. I bet she will love it! I feel the same way, that there is no reason to give up or feel discouraged with the plateau we are on. The alternative is gaining weight, so we all can just stick together and figure out what works for each of us!

I just looked up "portable air purifiers" hoping to find something you could carry around. (I'm sure you have already done this, but I was just curious.) Of course I only found little personal purifiers like for a car or office. It also dawned on me that you wouldn't want something that sucks air in near your face while walking around. You wouldn't want it to suck the allergens closer to you. I think what needs to be invented is a backpack that cleans the air and maybe has a necklace tube that blows the clean air under your mouth and nose, or for really bad allergies has a breathing mouthpiece that you could cover with a scarf. My husband knows a mechanical engineer who invented an inexpensive sanitation door for a hospital. Maybe I could ask my husband if he could invent something like this. What do you think?

Back when my parents kept pigs we had an employee who had health issues because of their... *fumes* so my dad found him a ( face covering) helmet with in-built filters and a ventilator that I think would blow the air away from his face like how in operating theaters they keep the air pressure slightly higher than outside so they don't suck in germs? I think that's how it worked; it's been 25 years or so...

Our fog isn't real fog. We live in the clear air underneath it. Then when you walk up a mountain you walk into it (if it's cold the trees may suddenly be covered in frost), are caught in it for a while, then if you keep walking up you can suddenly end up above the fog. It's like standing on the edge of a silver sea with summits poking up like islands. Suddenly everything will be bright, warm, and sunny. Need high enough peaks/low enough fog for that though. It can be a pretty thick layer.

We get fog on and off . Other than being hard to drive in it doesn't bother me at all .
Cate we have farmers that spread slurry here a few times a year . It's very hard to breathe when all that goes on . Marsia if you invent that mask I will have one lol .

Cate sorry you find the supermarket so hard . It's really tough .

Good on you setti g a September plan . I am doing that too

The helmet idea sounds perfect. I wonder if they are still around?

The fog you are describing sounds so beautiful and I love the way you wrote about it. It reminds me of a Casper David Friedrich painting "Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog" which I have always loved!

Hi, Marsia, Petal & LaMa & thank you for thinking of me. There are respirator masks available that I possibly could wear but I'm just not ready to wear ones like that yet & think I'll just get G to do the supermarket shopping from now on. I get enough weird looks now with my paisley carbon filter mask. Even with a full-on mask, I would still get the airborne particles on my head which makes me really itchy. Thanks for thinking of me. It's really sweet xoxo
G & I played golf at a course by the sea yesterday & had another lovely, sociable day. We are going to go out for dinner with quite a few of them the night before the next golf day. We really like these people & love how they have welcomed us into their group. We have lots of laughs! We saw 2 different Wombats on the course while we were playing & I took a photo of one to show you. I had to play a shot over this one-

I always wondered what a wombat looks like - they are adorable!! Glad you met a great group of people to hang out with, and hope the wombats don't mind golf balls whizzing over their heads!

Wombats are so cute! And square poo!

Your step count looks great, my friend, it´s so nice to have you doing so well :grouphug:

Thanks, Marsia. They are adorable. I think they are blissfully unaware of the golf balls flying over! Our golfing friends are lovely & I'm glad that we have found them too. Golf should be fun, xo

Thank you, LaMa! I know- isn't that wonderful? I love it when I see square poo on my walks. I appreciate the hug & your friendship xoxo
Determination & hard work will get us all closer to our goals. I'm going to stick with 5:2, but be even stricter on my fast days as I really do want to lose at least 1 kg this month. I have injured myself somehow. By the time I finished my game yesterday I could barely walk. It feels muscular & I have tried booking a massage, but am waiting to hear back to see if I can get one tomorrow as she is going away on Wed for a month. My lower back, LH side is very sore & it hurts to go up the steps. I also had a fall a few days ago getting wood. Fingers crossed I can have that massage tomorrow or I need to find someone new.

Oh Cate I am so sorry to hear about your fall . It sounds so painful and right when you were having a lovely time . Hope you get your massage and that it helps . Have you tried a pain killer . The fall might have triggered it maybe .

Hope you feel better soon . Hugs

Thanks, hon. I had some pain after all the tests with the Ex Physio & had been feeling a bit stiff & sore before the fall, but the fall exacerbated it. I won't even try to tell you what I was doing when I fell as it was stupid :blush5:
I have been taking Paracetamol as that's all I can take. I'll be ok xoxo

Lol ok we won’t ask . I have had a few bad falls myself in my time , 2 of them extremely embarrassing.
You look after yourself x

Oh, sorry to hear about your fall and hope you are taking lots of hot baths and things. My back goes out once in a while and I have to crawl around the house if it is really bad and sleep on a mattress on the floor because after I sleep all night I can't get out of the height of a bed. So I make sure I get gentle movement in because being completely stationary makes it worse. I try to get up in the night and walk or just move around if I can. When I am a little better I do little back exercises - there are good ones on youtube, but I don't do yoga for the back because it's too hard with an injured back. Hope you get your massage appointment soon!!!

My silliest fall was dusting the bookcase while standing on the arm of the sofa, and falling off into the metal holder for wood for the fireplace. Can't believe how long a fall that felt like, like I was reliving landing when skydiving or something!
