Cate's Diary

How about disc golf, Cate, have you heard about it? We have two disc golf courses in my town, and it is nice to have a little sporting walk in the afternoon...

I have considered chickens(chooks) LJ, but they wouldn't keep the grass down & we have 50 acres. They also would come & poop all around the house. They are even more work than sheep, having to be let out in the morning, brought back in each night etc. We are lucky in that we get to buy free-range eggs for only $5 a dozen. I do like chooks though.
Very amusing LaMa & very clever, especially considering you are unwell.
I haven't heard of disc golf Otherly. How the heck is that played? Is it like a cross between frisbee & golf. I'll look it up in a sec.

~Well~
I really must confess what I had for "dinner" last night-
8 rice crackers with brie,
1 slice of lemon meringue cheesecake,
1 whole bottle of Henkell Trocken ( a dry German bubbly)- minus half a glass that I tipped down the sink,
another slice of cheesecake when G got home &
1 orange.

Not good.

Today we are spending the day at home & I'll attempt to get the 4 miscreants back. Tonight we are going to a fundraising cricket match between 2 football teams. I wish we weren't going, but I know that we'll enjoy it once we're there.
I will be having a very healthy eating day.

So... they´re playing a sport they normally don´t play to collect money for charity? Could be fun - although I don´t really understand the appeal of cricket.

It's organised by Ricky Ponting, a Tasmanian, who is probably one of Australia's best cricketers ever. He is the North Melbourne Football Club's no 1 ticket holder & has organised a fund-raising cricket match between Nth Melbourne FC & Hawthorn FC, which has a huge fan base in Tasmania. This is AFL, not Soccer. It will be a fun match & not very serious, with lots of shenanigans. I'm not a HUGE cricket fan, but we enjoyed the last one we went to.

Cate, I have three things to share with you :
1) Disc golf really is a cross between frisbee and golf. You can google it easily. I once invited my Australian friend to play with me and he was very good from the beginning. He told me Australians are born with a frisbee in their hand, so that's why :) It is easy and fun, as you do not need much of an equipment. Just a driver, mid-range and putter (all being frisbees in this case). Your nearest disc golf course is near Hobart, so if you feel tired with the real golf or minigolf, try this :)
2) My Australian friend is a father of cricket in Czech republic, naturally. You know we play Ice-hockey and football here, but I am one of about 10 native Czechs who are in love with cricket - probably more than you :) There is a little league for expats in Prague, but I am from Ostrava (300km), so we play mostly indoor games during winter with local expats from cricketing countries. So I envy you soooooooo much this charity game today. And with Ricky Ponting - I remember watching him live in 2005 when England regained the Ashes after centuries :) (I hope there are no painful memories :) ) I even run a website in Czech language about "kriket" - so If you succeed to interview Ricky Ponting, I am ready to translate :) (or take a picture at least, pls)
3) My father quit smoking 40 years ago, and he told me the only possible way for him was to do it completely, from day to day - with no exceptions. What I learned about my diet, that if try for a while and then go back and up and down, I never succeed. I cannot allow myself extra dinner on Friday and expect to get back to my plan on Monday. I must do it "right" from the beginning - then I also build the right energy wave being "on the road" and it is not only a game, but real thing with daily visible results. Maybe we all have it different, but I am sick of losing weight all my life (I started 12 years ago), so now I try to do it right, with no exceptions, being supported by writing daily entries to blogs (two blogs as I do things OTHERLY :) )

Thanks, Emily. I wouldn't want one of these cheesecakes being delivered each week. I would be right back to my 2007 weight quick smart. It's dealt with now & all bar 2 small serves are in the freezer, along with G's cake. We'll have some tonight, after dinner.
And I forgot to add that your home is beautiful, so much land!! Really wonderful
Thank you, CL. We do love our home & where we live. When I get cranky with the sheep or struggling to keep on top of the weeds I only have to look around me to remind myself why we live here.
Otherly- I had really never heard of Disc Golf, but it looks like such fun. I'm pretty good with a frisbee. We may have to go to Austins Ferry one day & have a go at it.
The cricket match was more a fundraiser really, than a fair dinkum cricket match. I do actually like cricket, but am not a big fan of the big bash league. I love test cricket. I think we're creating a world full of short attention span goldfish. Whoops. Did I just type that? I am a traditionalist when it comes to cricket :blush5: The thing is, here in Australia cricket is on ALL of the time & I do get sick of it. My husband has it on & because there is really very little else on TV at this time of year, it's cricket, cricket & even more cricket.
In this charity cricket match Ricky Ponting only goes out when he decides it's time. He was technically out first ball, which was declared a no ball & I think he was out another 4 before he decided to walk off. It was just a fun thing. We were not even come close to him.
Sunflower- I know! Brie, bubbly & cheesecake. It sounds good, but isn't really. One of those things at a time maybe, but they do not constitute dinner & they don't go very well in your stomach.
LJ- we rarely call chickens anything but chooks. Chickens in Aus are baby chooks. In Tasmania we have native hens, that can't fly & we call those turbo chooks! They are so funny. We get lots of them on the golfcourse.

Cricket match- As we were walking to the stadium we saw one of our nieces, Em, who was moving her car. When we got inside the stadium we got a call from G's sister(her mother) who invited us to join them in a corporate box. Em & her husband own a building company & often have a corporate box apparently. It was lovely to share the evening with family, but G & I agreed we would have enjoyed the cricket better if we had been outside in the stadium. It was very generous of them. There was unlimited food & drink (I had 2 glasses of wine) & ate the GF sandwich I had taken. They had so many people in there with them at the end & they barely watched the cricket. It's not for us. The cricket was also a bit boring this time & we both agreed we wouldn't bother going again if he repeats it.

We got home a bit after 11 & G said "I wonder if Rafa won". I looked it up on my phone & it said it was live. We changed channels & watched the rest of the match. I think it was one of the best tennis matches I have ever seen. Now we have a Federer/Nadal final in the Australian Open. AWESOME! I love them both!

I think I am going to do a fast tomorrow(500 cals) & see how I go with it. I feel like going swimming somewhere today. I have my new swimsuit that I haven't worn yet! I can't remember when I went swimming last. It has to have been 5 years ago I reckon. That is so wrong. I'm Australian. I live on an island. We are surrounded by water!

Oh yeah, it's summertime in Australia, isn't it? Get that swimsuit out! Enjoy the sun, I would love if we had some here right now!

Cate, I am not a sport maniac, I studied literature :), but as you can see, some sports can connect people all over the world.
For instance, as you have cricket on all of the time in TV, we have ice-hockey on in winter (yes it is winter here now :) ). I went to one match in Prague last month and I met Australian girl in a queue, just behind me. She was absolutely thrilled that she will see real match with 10.000 people attending. She told me that ice-hockey is more and more popular in Australia.

Well I checked some stats and it is true. You even won Division IIB of World Championship last year, beating such countries as Bulgaria, Mexico, Israel, North Korea, and most importantly, New Zealand :)

Talking of Australian Open, do you know we had Czech final too in women's doubles?

For the discgolf, I include one incentive picture. It is not me, it is my friend / trainer who taught me how to play until I beat him once :) This picture is taken in a forest course near Jeseniky spa in mountains area.

I haven't been swimming Emily, but I hope to soon.
Disc golf really looks like fun Otherly & you are right about sport connecting us. There are not that many people who are not at all interested in sport, although my sister is one of them.
I have been away for a couple of days. We went to Hobart & visited our son. We went to the Harvest Market, G & R played 8-ball for hours, we met friends in a bar, went out for Thai & watched the Federer/Nadal Aust. Open final. This morning we went for breakfast at R's & drove home via the highlands, having a light lunch at the Great Lake.
I have had a nap & we just had some sushi for a light dinner.
We had a lovely time.
