The Meal Plan: Breakfast + Jenny Craig Lunches & Dinners (home delivered!) + Cutting Out The Booze

The Situation:
So it seems I have been gaining weight and blowing money on food like crazy since entering a long distance relationship!

It's hard getting groceries from your boyfriends state when you have no car and no way to get to shops :( After numerous attempts at figuring out a meal system, things have spiralled out of control - shopping once off on the way back from the airport, home-cooked meals frozen and brought in as carry-on luggage, winging it, home delivered groceries, eating out more, stashing food in the office...

I feel like I have spent the past six months eating out or takeaway. I finally found something that worked - getting the groceries delivered to his house when I stayed over. However, this was short lived as within weeks of discovering this system... The supermarket shut down their home delivery system! Noooooo! Back to the drawing board.

I will be getting lunches and dinners delivered to my boyfriends house in his state and my house in my own state every fortnight. I'll also be stashing cheapish breakfast food (bread, cheese, milk... things I can buy in a convenience store, rather than requiring a supermarket) in the office to help balance out the cost of the Jenny Craig meals.

Jenny Craig has been helpful to me previously.. I only hope they can help me again :(

Hi Tipsy Toes, welcome to the forum! Irregular life circumstances do make it harder to stay on track but I´m sure you can do it if you´re convinced and get a bit of support here (on the forum) and there (from your boyfriend). Just curious because I´m nosy: is your boyfriend a vampire? Does he only eat when you are there?

Wishing you all the best on your journey!

Thank you! :) And hahaha you're not far off! :S

He's one of those crazy people able to forget to eat EVERY DAY until dinner time! Then he's starving and wants something big, fast and convenient! Meanwhile I've eaten a decently healthy breakfast and lunch already... Doesn't help that he's 1 foot taller than me and seems to have so much muscle with so little exercise. It's honestly crazy how big this guy is! I love it.. But I hate it! He keeps COMPLAINING about losing weight. Ughhh!

6/6/16

Was just on the phone to my boyfriend as he tried very very hard to be supportive, while simultaneously complaining about how he hasn't eaten all day and buying KFC at the drive thu! o_O hahaha! Least he tries :blush5:

Now I just need to wait until pay pay to buy some fruit and snacks to tide me over between meals!

100kcal - Daily Milk Allowance
250kcal - Tomato & Cheese Toastie
220kcal - Potato & Corn Chowder (BEST recipe!)
310kcal - JC, Creamy Italian Pappardelle
TOTAL: 880/1600kcal = 720kcal defecit

NET total loss: 720/134,300

 That's not a lot of food for a grown woman... Maybe you could explain to your bf that the best way for him to support you AND keep his weight up is to make a food plan and stick to it? My sister and her (2 m tall) partner had a bet which ran for YEARS to see who would reach 75 kg first: she by losing weight or he by gaining. He won (and now weighs 76 kg)...

Hiya and welcome! :)

If I may suggest something...I hope you're not going to try and function on 880kcal a day? Such deficit (if prolonged) screws up your metabolism as your body goes into starvation mode. I think 1300-1500 would be better and if you combined it with exercise it'd let you lose weight in a much healthier way :)

All the best of luck!

Not at all! I just can't afford food shopping until pay day... It's honestly really bad :( I'm living off all that I have left in the fridge/freezer and the Jenny Craig. I usually aim for 1000-1200 daily + 200 from exercise, give or take, and splurge a little more on weekends. But... This week is going to be a little painful.

Hello and welcome! How was your previous experience with Jenny Craig like?

Thank you! Honestly I love it! Super easy to maintain, the food is pretty good and a ton more vegetarian options than most other plans have. It is pricey (but pretty standard for pre-prepped meal plans), but you get so much support and I think you get value for money. I'm pretty poor at the moment as I'm paying off a holdiay, so I'm just doing lunches and dinners, but I'll consider doing the breakfasts+snacks again soon.

If you're considering it, I recommend doing the entire plan for a month or two and see how you go! You tend to figure out ways to make it work even when you're going out - and the consultants help you figure out a game plan if you have a big celebration coming up. It's a huge help!

I know :( Pay day is 8 days away though, so hopefully it won't be like this too long. It's pretty depressing.

Thanks for the idea! I would love that! But he's the anti-planner! His weight seems to manage itself through over indulgence and starving himself. He has been working 12-14 hour days for the last 14 months (man we sound like an unhealthy couple!) so tends to want things he can cook in 15min with two ingredients and no thinking (chops/steak/sausages and potato). I might ask him to join me on JC when I come to visit though - maybe the planned, regular meals will be enough to convert him to a planner!;)

8:41am - I've already ruined the diet and it's day 2! Forgot to get my JC lunch out of the freezer dammit!
Guess I'm have a second cheese toastie today :S 8 days till pay day! Might see if I can scab a few silver coins off people and buy a mushroom for a cheese and mushroom toastie - don't want to get sick of Cheese and Tomato too soon!

Not only did I mess up my tasty lunch... But I'm going out to dinner with a Manager/family friend who is trying to headhunt me and convince me to join his Marketing team. Great career opportunity, but please let there be something healthy on the menu! Will report back.

100kcal - Daily Milk Allowance (for my tea and coffee obsession!)
110kcal - Office Biscuit
250kcal - Cheese & Tomato Toastie
250kcal - Cheese & Mushroom Toastie

Ahhh... the luxury of not yet worrying about how your choices will affect your health... O, well, I guess your boyfriend will have to find out for himself. I think you're doing well, given the circumstances, and hope next month will be easier.

7/7/16

It was a good day:

1. I think I'm sold on this new job! HUGE payrise, stock options, health insurance, phone, great company and all the mentorship and career progression opportunity a girl could dream of!
2. Job paid me back my work expenses so I am no longer owing a ton on my credit card - might look at buying some snacks tomorrow :S
3. Stuck to my calorie goal!

75kcal - Daily Milk Allowance (for my tea and coffee obsession!)
250kcal - Cheese & Tomato Toastie
250kcal - Cheese & Mushroom Toastie

Once again another good day!
1. Met my food goals
2. Got some great feedback on an event I ran at work! Woo!

My only gripe: SUPER poor now... Juggled my budget around. Going to have minimal money to spend on snacks after pay day because I'm throwing everything at this credit card bill to avoid the interest. Why are holidays so expensive?! And why do all the expenses come at once?! :( Least I've pre-paid 70% of the trip now, but doing it in one month is not pleasant. Trying really hard not to pull money out of savings or I'll lose my awesome monthly interest rate! As long as I time it, I can pay everything off within the 2 month interest free period.
All my living expenses are covered.. I just have no fun/interstate travel/eating out money for the next while. Jenny Craig is my one unnecessary expense I kept in the budget, and I could save myself an additional $400 a month (I comfortably live on $25 a week of groceries normally!)... BUT it's not about the money! It's about habits, portion sizes, the support and control over my own food when I see my man. Need to stick it out. I need to learn not to cheap out on everything.

Cheap, healthy snack ideas (under $4 for a week of servings):
- Apples
- Mandarins
- Carrots (but they're not much fun without dips/cooking)
- Rice Cakes
- 1kg tub of yoghurt divided into portions?
- Banana's
- ... Additional suggestions are welcome!!
