Maltodextrin, Dextrose and Whey flavouring.....

I got my first delivery of maltodextrin and dextose last night. After reading about having a pre-WO shake rather than meal on here i thought id try it before football training.

I used a scoop of vanilla whey (17g protein) and scoop of malto (35g) and a cup of water. it was really, really sweet, and was a lot of effort to get down. My vanilla whey normally tastes fine with water.

So if i use the 2:1 ratio for a post wo shake ill need 2 scoops of whey, and then a scoop of malto and a scoop of dextrose (34 protein, 70 carb)

Firstly this means i have a 400kcal shake where as its only ever been 120kcals; i work out late so dont like going to bed full and the shake plus a protein+veg meal will be 600-700 kcals after 9 o clock. i know i need the carbs pwo and ppwo and know that i should look at my macro diet rather than the smaller details but that sounds like a lot. i consider myself carb sensitive, i know when ive eaten too many and feel the effects soon after

Secondly, the shake is going to be so sweet. i decided to mix malto and dextrose to reduce the taste but 2 scoops of the stuff is going to be like slugging down syrup. is this right????

thanks

If your workout was hard, you'll need it all. The time of day is inconsequential to the body's need.

Use more malt than dex. Malt is like 50% or less sweet than table sugar and dex is 80% the sweetness of table sugar. When I make my shake it's:

30g whey
25g dex
35g malt
5g creatine
16oz skim milk.

After my workouts, this goes down real nice. I may even go 20/40 on the dex/malt.

Maltodextrin is a complex carbohydrate derived from corn.
Dextrose is a simple carbohydrate derived from corn.

There's a couple reasons to use Maltodextrin:

1. Longer lasting than dextrose.
2. It's less sweet so it helps prevent a PWO drink from becoming a sickeningly sweet concoction.

Why are you doing this? Ive never heard of folks taking maltodextrin and dextrose?

search our forums
spend time at www.johnberardi.com and lots of other sites...you'll see, the use of dextrose and/or maltodextrin for faster glycogen recovery, and an insulin spike (which also helps creatine absorption) is really quite common.
