Fifa Fever!!!

Australia wouldnt have scored if still playing now mind, but the way they went out was obviously a major disappointment.

And thank god Switzerland-Ukraine has finished - god what an awful game.

The Italian PK was def a questionable call, but Australia should have capitalized from having an extra man...I just saw the games last night...

Swizerland became the Shaq of soccer!!! (for those who don't know, Shaq is arguably the best center in basketball who can't score free-throws for the life of him)...Horrid PKs!!

I did something wrong up there with my predictions, I have Brazil withSpain isntead of Ghana but I still will pick Brazil. I think Ghana will go down kicking and screaming, and even though I've always liked Brazil a small part of me is rooting for Ghana :) And Spain/France I'll take Spain, France has been a little disappointing.

I'm still thinking about he Portugal match, I saw an analysis last night, they dissected the entire game and they were right, if the ref would have red carded in the 7th (or so) minute when C. Ronaldo got karate chopped in the leg the outcome would have been different. It pretty much became a free for all. The game looked worse when taken apart

I'm disappointed that the team I've supported, Spain, didn't make it through yet again. Though I also think France finally lived up to their potential.. and they deserved to win. I was happy to see Zidane scoring the last one, great goal!
Brazil - Ghana was somehow typical. The Africans played a great game but they weren't able to finish. Brazil did what was needed. For some reason I never doubt that they win it in the end... it feels like they could shift up a gear at any time.

I'm ashamed but somehow it's some kinda relieve to not have to stay home for a football game tonight (mind for me in Austria the games are at 5pm and 9pm)... I could more or less do whatever comes along. I'm looking forward to the quarters VERY MUCH though! It's getting so endlessly exciting...

I hope Argentina, Portugal, Italy and Brazil get through. I think England will manage to beat Portugal though... probably by a freekick, a Terry header from a corner or something.. and Germany could very well beat Argentina, but let's hope they won't. They have this terrible German winning mentality that makes them very difficult to beat in the latter stages.. let alone them being the host of the wc. They just won't give up, ever!

I did feel bad for Spain, espcecially since IMO the winning goal (#2 goal for France) came from a foul that wasn't and on top of that Puyol was carded! After that Zidane's goal was inconsequential-glad for him though. Brought back nightmares for Spain reminding them of Korea/Japan when they were denied what would have been the winning goal from another bad call :(

I'm also pulling for Portugal, they're def the underdogs right now but like you said England will pull off possibly on a set play.

I'm at odds with Argentina and Germany, I've always loved Jurgen Klinsman, as a player and as a coach so I hoped they did well, but I also can stand to win some $$ if Argentina wins :)

Brazil will most likely beat France unless they have a complete meltdown (not likely to happen) and France has their best game of the tournament.

Italy/Ukraine, I'd pick Italy but I've been wrong all throughout! LOL

They tend to go down very dramatically every time. I remember 1998 when they were crushing some team (forgot who), crying along with scoring all the goals because they knew they were already out...
Very emotional those spaniards ;)

How do you guys rate Ribery? Zidane's heir, just a hype.. or maybe in between?

My thoughts on Australia v Italy

Iam guessing your talking about the incident

Aussies have them selves to blame for the penalty, they shouldn't have been in a position like that in the first place. The defence was poor and Lucas Neil should have stook up.

The decision well it was 50/50, should have it been given probably not, especially in the 93min and plus the Italian dived.

It sucks it really does. I blame Fifa for not introducing video technology and I also blame them for changing the rules, it's not consistant. One ref gives 16 cards the other doesnt pull one till the 70th minute. It's hard on refs and linesmans there only human.

Ribery played awsome that much against Spain but i'll need to see much more of him then once match.

Well Zidane's one of the greatest players in history so he has a lot to do.

theres a midfield but no forward structure

with rooney ill give england a chance but there still behind germany, argentina and brazil

Yeah thats it, Rooney needs support and Beckham needs to keep the ball on the ground lol :) Another thing in your favour is that Deco and Ronaldo and a few others are out.

Look the team is not performing well but there getting results thats all you need

Good luck to them

You must have been watching that Portugal v Dutch game and laughed your ass off with the red cards :p

How come no one likes England on this board?

Ok, we've been very basic but let's face it, we've got possibly one of the, if not, the best midfields in the tournament... they just haven't hit top gear yet. It's really frustrating but hopefully after the Portugal game you's will all be talking about how great Gerrard & Lampard & Cole... & Rooney (of course) are!

Come on England!!!

Dont be daft.

Lampard and Gerrard do not perform as a pair - therefore to suggest that you have the best midfield is ridiculous when you're effectively playing with 3 (as one of them is ineffective, currently Lampard)

Beckham - one trick pony.

Cole - blows hot and cold and is the worst of the left sided midfielders remaining in this tournament.

England are a rank outsider, its just the Sun that tries to make everyone believe otherwise - Rooney as a lone striker wont get any goals because he will spend all day chasing the HOOF passes from Beckham/Rio into the corners and therefore only have one real likely scorer from open play and thats Steven Gerrard.

This time up against a top quality team for the first time in the tournament, and England will be dumped out.

Cole Lampard Carrick Gerrard Beckham is no match for

Ronaldo Tiago Maniche Petit Figo

Sorry but thats the truth, so therefore puts an end to the "best midfield" argument - look at Argentina, Brazil, Italy - all far far stronger than what England put out, even France have a stronger one.

Only side that don't and remain are Ukraine.

Yeah, I don't think that we 'dislike' England, I actually own a jersey :D. But chrissmith is right. They have individual talent but not collectively. Owen started out with a bang 4 years ago but hasn't shown much lately, I'm sure injuries play into it.

Rooney is good but his attitude will get him in trouble, he's a lose cannon! England if very good in set plays and I think that's what's saved them and gotten them where they are now.

I forgive him.

Cheeto:
England has world class players on each position, no doubt. It's just that they were playing really horrible football up to now... no really, I could barely watch their games. That's the reason why I want them to go out as soon as possible. Either that or a dramatic change, which I can't see happening.
Why is that? I think some have already given some good explanations. The players are oozing individual class but there is low chemistry, low moral and horrible tactics.

Hi Cheeto, if you go through the thread, you would notice that you are not alone here.
But it was bit too much for me and hence I stopped talking football here. Too many people saying rubbish against England.
My sincere advice? Do yourself a huge favour and talk about football someplace else.
And yes Come on England!!!

Off topic but...how do you guys feel about video assistance? Especially when a call can cost someone the game.

For the most part referees have done their job but they are only human and they are forced, by the nature of the game to make split second decisions.

I know this would never happen but how about allowing one challange per game and in turn lose a substitution? It would literally probably take less time then half a team arguing with the ref over what they see as a bad call...JMO

Here is what Blatter had to say when questioned:

Blatter said:
I've always supported referees, who are essential in football, to the extent that I continue to oppose video usage and other experiments that would restrict them in the execution of their duties.

Come on Manlondon, we were just giving our opinion...not just about England but other countries as well, (The US, The Czechs, France) they've been disappointing as well. I don't think any of us have been rude or out of line. Do you?

I was wondering what happened to you? :(

You've got to be careful from distancing the top level from the kids who play in the playground.

They can have the posts and the ball and thats all they need to replicate anything - but now if you bring in action replays to decide goals, it distances them from the top pros and you lose that magical feel.

Plus what keeps soccer (for want of a better word, save confusion!) on the back pages is the contreversy that it brings, cheating, referee's inept performances etc - rule that out and itll get a lot less coverage.

On the fact of England - Joe Cole has only had one good game this tournament - so cant see how you can slate Ribery for doing so? Joe Cole is and always will be a showboater - great in the easy games but hard going when things get tough. Cant afford passengers at that level.

aaawww, thanks Cheeto! There's a few games left yet so chime in...and welcome!
