working out & your period :/

I have a question for the women here. However, if you guys feel you can answer too then go ahead if you want.
I have always had an irregular period, well I have since I turned 12 anyways. I had to be put on birth control back then just to make it stop when it was supposed to. Otherwise I'd stay on it for over a month maybe even two. Well I'm not on birth control anymore but will try and get back when I get on my husbands insurance, should be soon. Anyways my question is everytime I start working out and start getting results I automatically start my period. It's extremely heavy and can even make me fatigue all day nearly everyday. So needless to say I end up quitting with the work out routines. My doctors always said it was just an irregular period, nothing else. Has anyone else gone through this?

I don't have irregular periods, but I have heavy periods for about 2 days. (I use the super strength playtex tampons about 1 per hour-2hours, I do get dizzy and tired sometimes but I just put the tampon in and push through it.)

yeah mines as heavy as having to use both a tampon and pad together. i do push through it usually up until its like that for over a week and then I'm just so tired all the time. Also if I don't take a break from working out or something it will just stay and not stop. Its always been like this. I don't know' hopefully I can get on bc or other hormone crap to take care of it soon.
i just dont want to have to stay on BC to fix it. I eventually want to have kids and I don't know how thats going to happen if I'm either on my period all the time or on birth control. But...that's a problem for later I suppose.

You may want to get checked out for PCOS.

I know that I sound like the PCOS queen here, but on the boards about PCOS, there are a lot of women who begin to regulate their period through exercise and diet, because they have insulin resistance. When they manage their blood sugar levels (insulin) they end up getting their periods. The pancreas is part of a system of hormones that promote the levels of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone that regulate periods and fertility.

Especially because you want to get checked out, go to your doctor as soon as possible and get the right tests for PCOS. Mention it to your doctor. If he/she doesn't know what it is, find another doctor.

Good luck.

I don't have the same symptoms as you- my periods vary from 28-45days and are slightly more regular. But when I do get them I get wiped out, they cause me alot of pain and this is why they wipe me out.

I find exercise helps with the pain but I wouldn't be without pain killers- the trick is to take them before any pain not when you first feel it. Luckily for me I get my period for about an hour before the pain starts so have normally enough time but pain killers are an absolute essential in my bad at all times as there is a good 2-3 weeks when I am left waiting for something to happen.
There are also suppliments you can try as having your period can lead to mineral inbalances and things like iron, magnesium and other minerals can leave you feeling shattered if you need them so if you can get a blood test to check on the day you feel so tired it could help but I see where your at- the trick is knowing and being able to plan around the time you are on which isn't easy anyway let alone if your irregular.

Do make a list of questions to ask your doctor though- it will be easier to get some answers and save you worrying, a list wont seem OTT if this is something which is ruling your life.

Yeah, sounds like you need to do whatever it takes to get on some kind of medication for it. If it's a money issue, I'd look for ways to cut costs even if it meant not having TV programs or going hungry a few days a month to get it under control.

That website says it could be a hormonal issue.

I don't think you should stop weight loss, because being as heavy as you are can in itself create hormonal problems. Did you have this issue with constant periods before you were heavy?

I was 12 when this heavy very irregular periods started and yes I was healthy. So for me I really thing have hormonal problems. I am going to ask about pcos when I go to the doctor though.
& i don't even have cable or satellite...jus a tv and dvd player. lol
But I know what you meant. We just hadn't had the time before or way to get there.

Yes. When I start working out after not doing it for a while it messes with my cycle. I think its normal, your body is just adjusting. If it's making you tired you might be anemic though. Eat more iron rich foods and mention it to the doc next time you go in.

I try to force myself to exercise through mine but its just horrible isn't it. I'm in the same boat having heavy periods and needing both a pad and a tampon. I get water retention too so I immediately feel fat and awful. It doesn't help that as soon as it arrives I a) start to crave chocolate! (I'm trying to have fat free yoghurt instead which is working at the moment) and b) I feel hotter and irritated or emotional and weepy. Plus I find my joints hurt too mainly my knees and back. I just want to hibernate once a month.

cool information here. i also experience the same thing. i've recently been exercising and i get an irregular period. but i've noticed that i'm getting my period sooner now that i exercise. but it's not heavy though and was completely painless. probably because i've also curbed on salty, oily and fatty foods.
