Wii Fit

I wasn't sure where to put this. Weight Loss seemed to be the most relevant place, but I'm thinking not just about weight loss but fitness in general.

I'm the sort of person who sometimes need a bit more stimulation to exercise. I do exercise fairly regularly, but not as regularly as I should, and I often go in spurts where I exercise a lot for a week or two and then almost not at all for a couple weeks. My main reason for not exercising is that it too often seems monotonous and a little boring. This is especially true in the winter when exercising outdoors is usually not practical. I'm very happy with my Concept2 rower, and when I can't exercise outside (i.e., I can't run because the sidewalks are all icy), rowing is my default exercise. However, although I enjoy rowing, it can get a little boring to do that everyday. FWIW, I tend to row for about thirty minutes at a time, rowing at about a 800-900 Cal/hour pace according to the ergometer.

Therefore, I'm thinking about getting a Wii Fit. Do I imagine it to be the best fitness tool ever invented? No. Do I think it will give me the best workout I could get? No. Do I think it would substitute for weights? No. But do I think it looks like a fun tool that could help me get in some beneficial exercises on days when I would otherwise find myself not feeling motivated to row? Yes.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this, given my situation?

Assuming you already have a Wii, the Wii Fit PLUS isn't a bad tool. Make SURE you get the Plus edition or you'll be paying $20 more for the upgrade disc to get the new stuff.

Some of the exercises are pretty good for developing core muscles, and improving balance and posture. While its not the greatest tool out there, its better than a lot of other stuff. Plus the balance board can be used on some other games (there's a snowboarding one I know of).

Thanks. Mostly, I'm just looking for something that is fun and actually gives me a substantial workout, even if it's inferior to some other indoor workout alternative. One of the beautiful things about sports as compared to just working out (running, weights, exercise equipment) is that sports has an extra fun factor derived from the drama and purpose of a game. Sprinting during an ultimate frisbee game can be the difference between winning and losing, whereas sprinting on my own quickly becomes tedious and certainly not addictive. Indeed, the main reason I would do sprints on my own is so that I can be a better, faster player during a game. I wouldn't expect Wii to be as good of a workout or as fun as an actual team sport, but getting to play some sort of game where I get a score and don't have to do the same motion over and over again would in many ways be more motivating than merely doing weights and the rower (not that I would stop either). Wii's apparent ability to give one good core balance exercises is also a strong attraction to me. Anyway, I'm still interested to hear what others think, but I'm leaning toward getting one.

We just have the basic Wii fit, and I enjoy working out with it. I use it maybe every third or fourth day I workout, as kind of a reward. :)

I mostly do the cardio exercises, with occasional trysts with the yoga moves. I haven't spent much time at all with the strength exercises.

the plus version lets you make 'timed' workouts and it'll put together a program, so you're not hunting around for the exercises.

and it adds more yoga poses, aerobics, and games.
the plus replaces your existing disc for $20.

G4 seems to think that Wii Fit is good for beginners, and EA's offering (don't remember what it's called) is for intermediates, and The Biggest Loser is for graduates of the EA game.

Hmm...I think Ill probably hold off for now then. I really just need to do a lot of cardio and fix my diet right now. I dont need any slow progress exercises. Thanks for the info! Probably saved me $50 or whatever it all costs.

You might be better served with strength training, with cardio as needed to get through plateaus. But fixing your diet will net you the most results, bar none.

Anyone know anything about the Jenny McCarthy game that supposedly has a little camera to record and correct your moves?

I have the Wii Fit original and I found I use it more for "fun" -- I love Hula Hooping and Ski Jumping :) --- than actual fitness. I was thinking of maybe trying a different game with it, just don't want to waste $60 on something that won't actually do me any good.

Never even heard of "Wii Active"...(google searches)...

Active is EA Games 'fitness game'.

Ah you are right! haha I swear I saw it in the stores next to the Wii stuff. Oh well. I pretty much have decided against those games. I dont have time with my REAL workout lol
