there really is no secret -if the cookies aren't in the house, you won't eat them... don't buy them, ask whomever it is that does your grocery shopping if it's not you - to not buy those items or to hide them away from you.

Single serve pack are also good when you really want the cookie, and just buy one.

You are going to live in real world - you can't avoid temptation completely... you just have to ask yourself if that item your craving is worth more to you than where you want to be health/body wise...

I agree completely. If it's in the house, I'm going to eat it...period. That's my personal demon.

I've often bought cookies, ice cream, chips, etc., and have said I'll ration myself to just one cookie, one cup of ice cream or one handful of chips once a week. In reality, once it's in my home it's gone within a day or two and I'm looking for more. I can't stop at just one of anything with regard to food.

You have to figure out for yourself if you're really serious about losing weight. If you are serious, high fat, high calorie, high sugar, high salt foods won't be in your shopping cart or in your house...period. Instead, when a craving hits you'll snack on fresh veggies and fruit, either whole or in juices. You have to retrain yourself and your cravings. That's the secret.

At a Weight Watchers meeting many years ago, I first heard the quote "Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels.” It's been a long time since I've been thin, but I can remember the feeling and the benefits of being at a healthy weight. I try to put that thought foremost in my mind when cravings hit.

Is that cookie and the 3 minutes of happiness I'll feel from eating it really worth the long term disappointment I'll face if I don't get this weight off...NO!

Good luck to you! :)

I find that keeping track of calories helps a lot. If I want something like a cookie I look at my calories and I think ok now if I have this I have only x amount of calories left for the day, if I am already low on calories for the day I will eat it, if not then I look and usually see that if I do eat it I will have very little calories left for supper or whatever. I have retrained myself to only have one. I keep telling myself that it is the "only one more" that is the problem. What I do if I must have something is I will have a cup of diet soda, it works for me, maybe something about it tasting like there are calories in it, I'm not sure. In time some of that stuff may no longer taste good to you anymore. I used to love frosted flakes and I had a bowl after a few weeks of dieting and they were gross, way too sweet and I felt weighed down after I had them, I cringe when I think how my body would feel after a Mc Donalds trio lol, that would probably taste gross now too.

wow~ i really find keepin track of calories difficult.. how do u knoe all the calories of the foold ur eating??
does water count??
do u write all the calories down on a note?? or can u just memorize it??
its amazing how people do that..

on the other hand, i know what u mean by feelin gross after eating things u liked in the past... of course ur body responds negatively to it also, but i think its more a mental effect.. u eat 5 pieces of cookies and feel like you've had a dozen or so.. eventhough 5 is like a third of what u used to have..
but i'm a little afraid because i feel like i'm too paranoid..
if theres too much stress after u eat somethin.. its no better than just eat it and be happy about it i think..

haha so true! i think now about how i would feel if i ate some of the shit i was eating a few years back...i used to pig out big time on munch food, used to smoke up in my room then head to the ultra mega big tesco supermarket 10 mins from my house, and literally eat 6 packets of crisps, a cheesecake, chocolate, muffins...etc. i never felt full! yet when i tried to eat 'properly' i somehow felt full. it never clicked to me until i turned vegan and all of a sudden due to not being able to eat junk food the cravings disappeared, i felt full and healthy for first time in life.

i still do foam at the mouth at some things, but my ideology of veganism stops me. if i wasn't vegan id let in and buy the cookie or whatever but i don't want to know when i think of the animals :piggy: it was hard in the shop last night, all the cookies were reduced, and cheap. damn if this was a year ago i would hasve bought 3 packs (with 6 cookies each) and worked my way through them. instead i made a veggie casserole and had some fresh bread. much more rewarding...

Walk some other route, that doesn't take you past anything tempting. If it's way out of the way, that's OK - exercise is good for you. :)

There are no calories in plain water. I use to track calories, but there is some guesswork involved if you don't cook your own food or eat out of packages. :)

I check the calories and really debate if its worth it. Its the only way I can confront what I'm about to eat. Its kinda like "high noon"...The Chubby Belly Kid versus the Delicious Donut. I am impulse eater so I don't really keep anything in the house that I know I can't resist. For me that's even crackers (yes, I can consume an entire bag within a few minutes). I'm glad this thread is here, because I need some ideas too. I recently got engaged and I know the rules will probably change when my fiance and I live together. I really think the worse part is being around people that are eating all the things you really really want.

how do I pass the temptation. I think of what exactly is in those foods and what I would be putting into my body. and I know it sounds cheesy but its true if you cant pronounce more then half the ingredients dont buy it. Even after I reach my goal I want to stay away from junk food all together. To me its like this

If there is not nutritional value/Im not going to eat it.

I agree paying attention to nutritional information really changes things. I was so disgusted by the amount of calories in seemingly innocent foods.

If you have to buy something in a coffee shop, go with tea. I also have tea at home that I drink whenever I think I'm hungry. Usually I am craving a taste rather than actually being hungry so it does the trick.

I brush my teeth when I feel like continuing to eat after I have finished my ration. It triggers the mind that eating time is over.

I'd also suggest baking your own cookies. That way you can limit the sugar, use whole wheat flour, substitute applesauce for oil etc. You can also freeze the dough and only bake one cookie at a time so that the number isn't out of control.

congratulations on ur engagement!!

i feel sad when people are eating the things that i'm tryin to avoid.. the worse thing is when they offer those things to me.. my heart says i want them but my mind tells me that i cant..

yesterday i went to my friends birthday party and everybody was tryin to get me drunk.. :cheers2: and it wasnt even MY birthday.. damn.. i managed to escape after two beer but i'm not that good on drinkin so i kept eating the chips in front of me... it was a long night...

thanks for ur tips !! yeah.. i totally agree that theres a lot of calories even in those things which people usually think is healthy.. its so scary that we're surrounded by all this things that are high in calories but we dont actually know..
i think brushin teeth might actually help a lot.. its a psychological thing when u've brushed ur teeth then u dont eat sweets or junk food anymore.. :p

Morning,

well.. i stopped the habit of stackin cookies and chips in my dorm..
but i just cant help it when i walk pass the stores...

No, that's not true (in my humble opinion). You CHOOSE to have it - it's not that you MUST have it or you will expire on the stop.

I'm big on taking responsibility for owning our own choices. I'm the same way regarding coffee (life would be meaningless without it), but I make certain to use zero calorie sweeteners in it. If I didn't, I'd have to assume the responsibility of my caloric choices.

So....if you feel you will choose to eat that waffle, walk the other way. Remove the temptation. Take control of your actions (not only weight loss, but avoiding the temptations in the first place). It's tough...but can work.

Best wishes,

Barbara

yeah.. mental control is indeed really important..
i regret all the time after eating that waffle or drinking hot choco..
but regretting doesnt have any power.. :p

I used to crave something sweet after everytime I had ANYTHING savory...lol. I haven't really bought any junk food for a while. After seeing a few pounds come off with my hard work, it's like a magic switch turned on in my brain called self control! I have two little boys who got two buckets full of candy at trick or treat. If I feel like I want something sweet, I will eat ONE piece once a day and no more. I think that "everything in moderation" has been the key for me. I haven't really been strict with counting anything, just smarter choices and portion control and only eating when I get hungry instead of out of boredom.....and of course working out everyday.

I'm a total "planner." Things work better for me if I make notes about them...like at work I have at least two places where my "to do" list for the day is written. At home, I plan the meals my husband and I will eat, Monday through Thursday, for three weeks at a time before I grocery shop. Then on Sparkpeople.com I keep track of the calories in the things I'm eating. If the site doesn't have the food you're going to eat listed, you can add it and the nutritional information on your own. Keeping track of the calories I'm eating in a day, and keeping it within my 1,400 to 1,600 per day limit, makes me feel like I've accomplished something, and keeps me focused on the goal I'm trying to reach.

At work, though...things get hard. In an office setting, you've got people bringing all KINDS of crap in here...cookies, peanut butter-filled chocolates. You know. BAAAAAAAD stuff. Good thing I'm not on a "diet." I'm working on changing my lifestyle, which means slip-ups happen. Yeah, I'll eat a cookie. But if I do, I can go on sparkpeople and make adjustments on what I'm eating the rest of the day to allow for the cookie.

Maybe I'm weird, though. But it's working for me....

yeah.. i think thats what i do too.. theres no strict to dos and donts but just thinking and makin choices..
but it gets hard when there comes some times when u just cant control urself.. those times i get really moody and sad... :(

Gosh...me too! I get SO mad at myself sometimes when I slip up. But I still enjoy every single delicious morsel of the food I'm slipping with....
