What to do when you have a cold?

Hi everyone!

I'm new to this sight so I hope that I'm posting in the correct place.

My question that I have for everyone is what do you do when you have a cold? I just started my weight loss journey and 3 days into it I've come down with a cold. Stuffed up noise, soar throat, and my head hearts. A true sinus head cold. I'm not coughing, at least not yet. So do I workout still? I've heard that it is bad for you to workout when you have a cold because it can make it worse, but I'm not sure if it is true... what have you found to be true for you?

Thanks :svengo:

Well I'm no expert but it depends on how bad it is I guess?
A little time ago, I had a cold, just a bit of a stuffed nose, it wasn't very bad so before exercising I took some saline nose spray and went for it.
I did have to rest a bit more than usual while taking a break, but wasn't super out of breath or anything.
So for me that worked, but it might not work for you.
Resting is probably better though?

I'm probably not very helpful, but wanted to add my 2 cents anyway :blush5:

Hope you get better soon :grouphug:

I take a stupendous amount of Vitamin C, usually when I feel the symptoms coming on..it really helps me at least..I buy those emergen-c packets, gives me a lot of energy and helps my sore throat too for some reason.

If you are going to do running while you have a cold just make sure you drink quite a lot..and don't do it too close to bed you need lots o sleep

Lucky you actually. I find that when I'm sick it suppresses my appetite. Just be sure to drink lots of fluids (water, tea, soup) and consume lots of light-colored fruits and veggies. Workout only if you personally feel up to it; I've gone running with a cold and I found that it helped me recover faster.

I do probably the worst things to advise when I get a cold (n/b a cold not the flu or anything where I am unable to walk in a straight line/operate heavy machinary).

I go do a workout.

I do this for several reasons, one being that I strongly believe that exercise boosts the immune system and so helps me over come my cold.

I also drink more fluids when I workout. Drinking does not come naturally to me it makes me gag- especially to drink water, yet one session a the gym (1.5-2 hours) and I easily get through 1-2.5 liters of plain water! I know part of that is my sweating in what is a very air conditioned and dry atmosphere and breathing mainly through my mough (more air faster!) but I do think I make up for lost time. I think this helps as it keeps up my fluids which help to flush out whatever virus I have.

I should add here I always carry an antiback fluid and clean the gym machines before and after I use them- even if I don't have a cold. I'm a bit germ-phobic!

I think exercise also boosts my circulation, making me feel warmer and more "alive" it improves my mood and makes things feel easier, this helps me feel I am fighting my cold and I think alot of getting over a cold or any illness is believeing you are winning the battle.

I rarely take vitamin C pills, I eat quite healthily (loats of fresh fruit and steamed green vegetables) which I think my body can handle better then too many vitamin C tablets (and means I don't get bowel issues!) and I tend to up my intake of green vegetables when I want help getting rid of a cold. Also generally eating well- no junk, reducing the dairy seems to help and eating white fish or chicken also can help.

I think you need to listen to your body. Sounds like mindless advice, but normally I would go workout and punish myself to get the workout done. However, I now start and watch how my energy is going. If I feel drained and getting less energy from the workout, then it is time to stop. I do that now even when feeling well.

See if it is improving your energy or not.
