what exactly IS HIIT

Does this burn more claories?

For me about 20 min running burns about 280 calories. Doing HIIT, how much more would I burn?

I just finished my first HIIT workout....

...now I have that wonderful feeling like I'm going to hurl.

The joys of working out, haha!

I started doing HIIT on the eliptical. I do one minute fast, one minute slow to catch my breath. I sometimes wait 2 minutes in between depending on how tired I am. I warm up 5, do 25 minutes HIIT and 10 minutes at a comfortable pace. Sometimes I'll go as fast as I can on lower resistance and later in my workout go slower but increase the resistance. I have found my cardio has dramatically improved. Not only that, my breathing is actually better. It gets easier and easier to breath normally.

In my 40 minute workout I burn about 510 calories doing HIIT vs. only about 400 at a steady pace. It is a tough workout but worth it.

I was under the impression the only two reasons for doing cardio were A) burning fat, and B) building stamina. Am I wrong? :)
The word cardio means "heart" and vascular has to do with your vascular system "system of veins" so it has a great deal to do with heart health (preventing heart disease) and bloodflow.

Hey Guyz, this Thread cool man, Ive always been in a doubt about reading this HIIT. Now Iam happy I knew something new this morning :D. I shall try it in the evening nd see how I feel. It sounds cool though.

I did my first HIIT for 10 mins , this is how I did

1 min- walk at 3 MPH
1-min- Run at 6 MPH

Like wise did it for 10 mins, I have burned around 90 cals, I felt its a very good warm up too, its quick in burning cals, I used to burn 100cals when walking for 20 mins at 3.8MPH, I did it in 10 mins with HIIT. will do this everyday, as my goal is to burn away fat.

Thanq everyone in this Thread.

30 minutes is plenty for a HIIT workout. I do 5 minute warmup, 10 intervals at a minute each (20 minutes total) and 5 minutes cooldown with some stretching afterwards. The stretching afterwards really helps flexibility (and increased my kick height. I can kick someone in the nose if I need to :) )

aevans what speed do you do your routine? i want to do a routine but i want someone actual example, so far i've seen people like me who dont know put up stuff, and someone put up an example of like 1 min @ 3 MPH and 1 min @ 8 MPH, repeat, but what do you do?

I'm not Aevans but when I do HIIT as cardio it will look like-
100 yard sprint, 100 yard light jog back, 100 yard sprint, 100 yard light jog back, etc

or on the treadmill
1 minute at 12, 45 seconds at 6.5, and continue

thanks for the example. I used to go running and would sprint and then jog, but it was just random when i felt like it, but now i think im going to do this. Im probably going to start doing this training, read a couple of article I found about it and it seems worth while to pursue. Now its just a quesiton if i want to do it on the treadmill or do it on the field...

Hands down, the field is my favorite place. I 'specially love it when it's not to cold outside and I can run barefoot. I've found the 100 yard sprint/jog is good. I also like doing 60 yard sprint, 80 yard jog, 60 yard sprint, rest 60 sec, repeat

i always feel like i'm going to pass out when i do intervals. i do it on the treadmill in a 2min interval for 20-22mins

2min walk at 4km/hr, then 2min jog at 12km/hr.

after 20mins i can see my entire body all red and aching. sometimes i scare the girls beside me cos when i'm running, i was panting as if i'm moaning...............
quite embarressing on busy days..............

I would pick the field/track hand down too, especially since my school has a state-of-the-art track (the rubber absorbing one) as well as a Turf field. But, I go to a private high school which is about 15 minutes in the opposite direction of my gym, so I really don't feel like driving to my school everyday then going to the gym.

Technically yes as there are periods of high intensity and low intensity. It probably depends on the class too - every instructor will be different and the main goal with spin is to keep your heart-rate up. Personally, I consider 'proper' HIIT to be a bit more structured. ie. 5 min warmup, 1 min sprint (flat out), 2 min jog (about 9kmph) repeat this 3 more times then cool down for 5 mins. It doesn't have to be on the treadmill, I did intervals on the cross trainer last night and I actually found them harder. Could only manage flat out high intensity for 45secs at a time!!

we did these in basic training. we would do like 12 minutes of indian runs, 15 minutes of self paced jogging, then 6 intervals of sprints. i dont remmeber how long we sprinted each time though. my 1.5 mile dropped from 12 minutes to 10 minutes in a couple weeks.

The best way to do it that I've found (and of course, everyone has their own routines) is to use a 400m running track - sprint the 400, jog a 400, sprint a 400, cruise (3/4 pace) a 400, sprint a 400, jog a 400... you get the idea.

Very very hard work though :(
