We're Getting Fatter! ! !

Its sad, but at the same time, I can't help but to think, what exactly is the point of that article? Either its, don't bother dieting, your going to be fat anyways, or live you life everyday worring about your weight.

the article said you cant be "complacent" about your weight or food. so what i got out of it is that you need to constantly worry about and keep on top of it or else!

I do too - it is so sad!
Yeah .. I got that people should worry about their weight and sure I know worry is bad ... BUT maybe if more people worried about it then we wouldn't be such an overweight country!!

well i dont care if america is fat, thats their problem. even if i did care, i couldnt do anything about people stuffing their faces with cheeseburgers!
all i can do is keep myself and my kids fit and trim.

i was watching 20/20 last night and they had a thing on about weight. they talked about processed foods and how they all purposely contain ingredients that tell your brain to eat more! and since our world is in such a hurry these days, people are turning to these types of foods more and more thus getting fatter and fatter. so technically its not ALL really the consumers fault.

This forum is a testiment to how people are trying to do stuff about it. And how we are succeeding despite fast food chains... and how we can control what we eat and control the size of out body. THis is nothing about whoes fault it is... because we all have.. with a little work.. managed to eat healthier and loose weight which is fricken awesome with foods the way they are today!

I say.. think positive.. be positive.. and dance around in that skirt you finally managed to get into.. :D *twirls*

I agree that dwelling upon whose fault our weight problems might be is not really the answer. The important thing is that we take responsibility for ourselves, for our health, and do something.

It has, however, been an education for me. The scale and my waistline tell me in a very direct way/weigh that there are ramifications to my decisions. I can decide to eat well and exercise or I can decide to eat poorly and sit around. Which path I choose is up to me.

And Kat, it is great to see you more than half-way to your goal. I see that you have set out to lose 80 pounds, almost the same as me. I can harldy wait/weight to follow in your foot steps!

food additives/hormones

the problem mainly is the food additives, dyes, and hormones in our food. Some actually cause us to crave it! in its own way its a drug. Even "diet" foods actually can do more harm.. Im not talking about fresh produce etc etc but literally diet foods specfically targeted for this purpose. All the extra added preserves and fillers and what not.. is literally killing us. its not making us all overweight as we all have different bodies and assimilate things differently.. but simply its unhealthy for us all in different ways.

Stick to organic.. or foods in their natural form as much as possible. To limit your budget buy organic apples as you typically eat the skin... but dont buy organic bannanas, as you throw the outer edge away. But all in all if you can afford all organic or all in its natural form is best.
Throw out cans, boxed, packaged things if possible... i know this isnt practical for everyone.. but this is the best solution to or obesity problem here in America.. they know whats killing us.. but unfortunately, like the drug companies, and well known manufacturers.. theirs kick backs ... politics in everything really.

eat healthy eat fresh! in February im going to start a raw diet. probably 80/100 at first and work my way up... :)

This is why I'm glad I live in a small city. When I get my career started, I want to buy a house with a fair-sized yard so I can grow my own veggies and fruit and keep a few hens - wilderness garden style! The joy of being able to own your own yard. I can't wait! Though, of course, it will mean not being able to get all the fruit and veggies one wants out of season without getting the nasties -- and with the drought on, most yards probably can't support more than a few trees and bushes. Still, can only dream!

Anywho, I understand that people have got to take responsibility for their own actions but I gotta admit that I find it amusing when the fast food companies themselves say they can't be blamed. Oh yeah, I'll bet they spend billions of dollars on advertising because they don't really think it works in causing cravings or convincing people that we'd all be happy if we rewarded ourselves with some fast food. I mean, it's not like their ads are awareness raising, we all know Wendy's and McDonald's exist.

Hey all!
The way I see it is if you eat right and stay active the weight shouldnt even be an issue.
I have lived in Japan for nearly 10 years now, and on each visit to places like the states or australia the first thing I notice is how most food is judged based the serving size rather than the actual quality, this is such a fundemental part of the problem. To quote one instance, I was in San Clemente last December, now living in Japan my appetite is quite small, unless I have a mammoth surf sesh, so not feeling too hungry at 7am I went to this little cafe beach place and asked what is the lightest meal they have on offer. they told me it was the breakfast burito, so I ordered it, expecting a 3-4 bite sized meal that would set me up for the surfing ahead, when it came however it was huge, I ate only about a third before I was feeling stuffed, the thing was delishious, but jammed full of egg and cheese, which made it super heavy in my stomach! my 3 mates ordered the big breakfast and on our table sat enough food to feed a sumatrian villiage for a week. It is time to change our mindset people, go for what you need in a meal, not only size of servings verses the price, making that kind of deal is eventually paid for by your body!
Before coming to Japan I would eat a big steak most nights, drive that extra 20mins to get that jumbo $5 burger, nowadays its veggies, sushi, chicken and cereal that make up my diet... my energy levels are peaking, my weight is way down and I feel great!
I urge everyone to change that mindset, forget the bargin style of eating and focus on what you really need for your body to perform each day!

peace

Surf and Sushii YUM !!!!

eat right keep it light you said it bro!:)

and laraqua you make a great point on the advert by mac etc, I hate when I see kids jumping up and down yelling we want macdonalds! it saddens me that kids are the target for these corportions. "Make money at any cost" should be stamped on their logos, like the warning on cigarettes!

This is a great thread people, just gave rep to most of you on here, so many good ideas in here.

on the makes you want to eat it idea though, heroine, nicotine all make you want it, but you have the choice to resist those cravings, No it is not fair to put that in food and I believe there should be warnings on it in regards to protecting minors from developing a fast food addiction, but if you are addicted to the fast food junk, then simply apply your will power and kick it!

Seriously! When we come back from Japan the portion sizes in the US and the lack of healthy choices is always a shock. When it comes down to it though it's up to us to decide what to put into our bodies and for consumers to reject unhealthy foods and portion sizes. If people were not buying it the stores wouldn't be selling it.
