Weightloss or body building?

So, ok. I have a bit of a problem.

I'm a 17 years old male, and the easiest way to describe myself is out of shape.

I'm 5'10.5 - 5'11 and my weight is a stable 140 lbs. It usually fluctuates between roughly 140-145, but stays within that range most of the time.

The problem is, I'm out of shape. I've been exercising on a daily basis for the past, lets say 4 years. Maybe 4 1/2. My physical body is thin, but there are areas of fat throughout my body, such as my side area, thighs, stomach and a bit on the chest. My main thing is jogging. It's something I've been doing for the past 4 years and continue it as much as possibly, usually 5-7 times a week, along with a shorter amount of cardio exercise, such as crunches and pushups, etc.

The problem is, I still can't get into shape. I use to think it was because of my obesity as a child (at age 12 I weighed roughly 165 lbs) but after nearly 5 years, I don't feel that I should still be struggling.

I like to think my diet is rather fair. I eat twice a day, drink low-fat milk about one time a week, don't consume cheese, red meat or pork, and consume little that is cooked in fat or butter. As well, my sugar intake is low, aside from fruit which I eat on a semi-daily basis.

Is there something I'm doing wrong here? Should I focus more on the cardio/body building workouts, and less on the jogging? Should I consume MORE protein?

My being out of shape isn't noticeable under clothing. In fact, most people find me to be very thin, but it is something I notice on my own time, and something that hinders me from a lot of things, such as relaxing at a pool or beach. I do have bad self image, and I realize it's something that I shouldn't have, but I'm also not so stupid as to do anything too extreme, like develop an eating disorder.

If you have any suggestions I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Um, exercise and eat a healthy balanced diet.

You need to eat 4-6 smaller meals/snacks per day which should be balanced w/ protein/fat/carbs.

You would benefit from visiting a nutritionist to help you determine the optimal ratio of nutrients.

Jogging for some w/ your body dimensions is not going to help you get in shape. Results are all about intensity and moderation.

You're only eating 2 meals a day?? List everything that you eat on a typical day and let us see it.

You are doing cardio- good.

What about weight training?

Like FT said, eat lots mores smaller meal but try to keep the calories the same. Now you have to choose, do you want to lose weight or gain muscle? Keep intake of protein at 1g of protein per body weight so for you 140g per day. Just adjust the Carbs intake for weight lost or weight gain; eat more than maintaince for muscle gain and less for weight lost.

Instead of just jogging, try interval sprinting. That should help develop the thigh and shoulder. Additionally, try swimming to help the upperbody. Have you seen a flabby hardcore swimmer / surfer? Mix up your workout, I might guess that your body have adjusted to jogging.

Btw, congradulation on keeping the weight down and adjusting your diet / lifestyle so far. I applaud you for fine tuning your results and setting NEW goals, now that you have achieved your weight lost goal. Keep it up and you will achieve the body that everyone envy, you have the right mentality!!! One last unsolicited advice, be content with your body wherever you are while you are chisel your perfect physique. Like Miley Cyrus's song, "IT'S THE CLIMB" so enjoy it bud.

at 5'11" and 145lbs, you are underweight. If you are flabby instead of lean and ripped, I'd say your biggest problem is a lack of good muscle mass. Your crappy diet and focus on jogging has lead to that.

Luckily, you are 17 and can easily change your body around. thank god for testosterone!

Eat more food. Lift heavy weights. Cut back on some of the running.
