weighted push ups

i was thinking of doing weighted push ups instead of bench. i have a vest that attaches in the front so i can secure a backpack with weights. would this be a good sub for bench? what are the pros/cons of doing this

Well it is an exercise that mimics the bench press in a way. The problem is getting the raw strength gains that you do from the bench. Its more of a conditioning exercise in my opinion.

Phate is the expert on these though.

No exercise is a replacement for another. Weighted pushups are a fantastic training tool, but so is the bench. Rather than replace one with the other, why not alternate?

It might not be as great as doing bench press, but they are definetly better than nothing.

Pros: Intensive workout especially for the tri's
If you go low and wide enough, they can be a pretty good chest exercise as well.

Cons: The stronger you get, and the more weight you put in the backpack the more strain you put on your back. When i was doing 60-70lb weighted push ups it was very difficult to keep your back straight and ended up having back pain, and thats why i reduced the weights and just stuck to high rep.

You can try doing inline / dicline weighted push ups as well.

Are you going to go high weight low rep, or stick to lower weight high reps?

I started off with 10-20lb weights and just worked my way up till i was able to do 3x20.

so it wouldnt be an ideal chest workout? and yeah im doing low rep high weight. 8-12 reps

it will work to an extent. It's probably a good idea to do both, the pushups being a sort of assistance exercise. They have a lot of differences, but they will both get the job done if you want to stimulate your pec muscles. If you want the push ups to make your bench bigger, you might be barking up the wrong tree. If you just want muscular development, they will work fine. Also try elevated pushups.

weighted push ups aren't ideal for hypertrophy for the chest. If your expecting to get huge pecs from this you wont see huge results. But weighted push ups can be a great exercise if used with other chest/tri exercises.

ok so are you saying that they will not work my chest very much? will i gain size at all? i know i have to eat a lot too.right now i want to gain some size and then later really focus on strength. and thanks for all the replies!

If you train with others, get some chains. Do some chain push ups. Look up Defranco chain push ups on youtube. I have my soccer players doing these and they love them.
