I am currently weight trainning. I am tall and slender, and cannot really afford to lose weight, only gain muscle mass. I eat a balanced diet with the right amount of calories, protein, and carbs for me. I weight train 3 times a week, which is about all i can fit in to my crazy life. I take one hip hop dance class a week which is great cardio and lots of fun, since i have studied dance for over 18 years. My question is everytime i go in to weight train do i need to do cardio as well? or do you think one cardio activity a week is enough, maybe 2?

well even if you're not looking to lose weight, cardio is also to keep your heart healthy. so dance once a week, and maybe run or bike a few miles another time a week? i'd mostly reccomend long aerobic activity for the 2nd cardio since your dance is probably more like HIIT..

if you don't want to lose weight, don't do the extra cardio - it's unnecessary

if your weight training is intense (and it should be, if your goals are to build muscle) and you're doing the dance class, that ought to be enough.

i dont understand what you mean by this, maybe because i dont knw what a HIIT is.

high intensity interval training, short spurts on max power followed by a short period at very low intensity, e.g. 60sec - 60sec etc.

I know mant serious weight trainers will disagree, but u may want to look in to body pump one a week. Its lifting small weights many many times, you will not grow as fast but there is no doubt it will improve your health and tone you up really nicely. On the other hand you may want to do 2-3 weeks heavy weight training, and 1 week solid cardio or body pump.

After getting to a size im happy with, Ive started cutting up by doing strenght based cardio for 30mins 4times a week (but not directly after a work out) I use the stepper, rowing machine, Inverse cycle, and cross trainer. when you use these machines on a very high resistance you get ur heart pumping really fast and really quickly, you save lots of time as you can burn fat and shape muscle in a very short time. I got really good results cutting in 2weeks.

Many weight trainers dont spend much time getting cut, but i think its an important part of training, and also gives ur body a shock when ur change your work out. many ppl find they grow much quicker in the weeks after cutting as due to the change.

Thank's for y'alls help. I dont think my dance class is a HIIT. Its pretty intense the whole way through. I am considering adding another cardio activity to my list. maybe running, or even another type of dance class.
