Weight loss and fitness question =)

First off Im 5'9 and I weigh around 225 and am a 23 year old male. Im not exactly unhappy with my body since I have never had a problem with being a bit over weight. I also have never had to worry about what I eat because overeating (and gaining more weight) has never been a problem with me.

But Im planning on joining the military and as such I need to get my body into really good shape. My overall question is if anyone has any advice on how I can lose weight fast and get into overall great shape. Im not asking for some miracle cure or any of that nonsense. Im simply trying to create a really intense workout that can get my body into shape in the shortest time possible.

In order to attain my goal I have put everything else in my life on hold (thats a nice way of saying I quit my job and am living off my REALLY supportive family now heh) so I can devote most of my waking time to fitness. I realize I can't exercise 24/7 since the body needs sleep and time to recover from the workout. But any advice would help me atleast get started on the right path.

I have not applied for service yet so I have however long it takes. But I still want to get into shape as fast as is possible while still remaining safe and healthy. My thinking was 3-4 months of intense workout. Now I have no idea if thats realistic even with a really intense workout but thats why Im seeking adivce so I can get on the right track.

You can get into decent shape in 3-4 months. Since your going into the military, you want to condition yourself with bodyweight exercises. Do a google search on bodyweight exercises, and make sure you do pushups, and pullups (everyone I've talked to thats went into the marines told me they spent a quite a bit of time on the quarterdeck doing pushups).

As far as running goes, what you do will be dependant on what you can do NOW. Can you run a mile now?

What you may want to do is start doing HIIT (theres a forum here for it) run 1 minute/ walk fast one minute. Do that 10 times 3 times a week gradually building up intensity. This should increase your running capacity.

My body is more or less a couch potato so I have more of a problem with shortness of breath than low energy when I try and jog. I can probably maintain a decent jog for 300 feet before I must slow to a walk. A few days ago I did go for a 2 mile walk and I found that it wasn't tiresome and that I could probably have kept going for another 3 miles. So I know Im probably not AS out of shape as I first thought.

ok HIIT is definitely for you. If you have to jog for 30 seconds then walk for 1 minute, thats fine. Just try to improve every session. Make sure between sessions you give your body ample time to rest also.

It sounds like a good solid method of building up my running ability so I will start doing it tomarrow. Is running the fastest way to lose my extra weight?

Is simply doing push-up's and sit-up's along with the running going to get me to where I want? I want to make my workout intense but I have learned that its best to keep things as simple as possible as well. Do you think I need to expand my workout plan to incorperate a few other exercise's as well?

It'd also help to look up the "Army Physical Fitness Test" on google. This is initially what you'll do your first day at bootcamp. The better you prepare youself the easier bootcamp will be... you can make it hard for yourself or you can prepare and do well

You can download the whole army training manual if you look for it. Then start conditioning yourself based on what you will be doing. It's full of different stretches, calisthetics (spelling?) and other physical fitness training.

I think some good advice has been given here. I have a couple questions-Can you join a gym? Will your family buy you sand, dumbbells, duffle bags, 5-10 pound paint buckets and some free weight plates?
