Weight lifting duration?

Hey all,

I was lifting weights as I usually do and a basic question, one which I have no answer to, popped in my head.

I know periods of exercise vary per person. Depending on their weight, size and overall fitness needs. But I was wondering if it is possible to achieve an adaquate weight workout in the area of 30 minutes?

If not what is a good time period?

Ive read about doing workouts where there is no rest between sets. But at a crowded gym, jumping from machine to machine may mean waiting in line.

Im open to ideas/advice. Im at a point where my gym routine has been the same for a while and I need to change it up. Plateaus and all that.

My workouts usually last about 45-60 minutes. After each set, I jump rope or punch the punching bag. If you could just try to jump rope between each set, you should be good. I find that doing things inbetween sets results in me staying more focused and working harder.
 
yet, if you are training for strength you will want all the rest time between sets. you have to rest in between sets when you weight train so that you can be ready to lift at your greatest potential by the next set. unless you are conditioning to be able to keep moving after excerting(sp?) a lot of energy...like for wrestling.

you can get a great workout in with just 30 minutes. it just depends what you do and how you do it.

thanks for the replies. i guess ill have to do a little research on my part as well.

i have a punching bag, so I think Ill through that into my rest periods. Im a skinny guy and Im working out mainly for conditioning. Im a cop and I need to be fast and agile. Toning up and getting leaner will just be added benefits.

I have free weights and a pull up bar in my house, so the possibilities are limitless. Ill just have to experiment a bit.

And reading material you guys suggest?
 
well if you want to know the basics of weight training, i recommend The New Rules of Lifting. i got it off half.com for like 10 bux. its great for teaching basics of weight training. has a couple pre made programs in there too for ya.
