Hey guys !! soo, I am starting college soon and I want to walk. My college is about 5.2 miles (one way) from my house. Does anyone think that it will help me loose 12 kilograms in about 5 months ? I would be walking at least 6 times a week ... where will i loose most fat anyway ? (btw 5.2 miles is about 10,000 steps so about 20,500 steps a day) Thanks for the comments !! Ohh and not only walking would be included ... I will be eating healthier and doing exercises and no food after 6pm .. Once again THX !!

That's a lot of walking, so yes! Combined with a healthy diet you should lose 12 kg in even less than 5 months.

Thats such a great thing to do and its a good distance. I miss walking, I used to walk for miles and miles. Now I am restricted because I live so far from work I have to drive. There is a no parking zone on the business park so I have to use the carpark at work.

You'll tone up nicely too walking that distance. Best of luck

ohh and cant wait for results ;) ... i think I'll post my first pictures towards the end of February so we will c :)

Be very careful to make sure that you DO NOT text while walking near a fountain! Especially at an indoor mall! (Google Fountain Woman if you haven't see the viral vid. yet)

Walking is a major part of my weight loss and is a really great way to add exercise into your daily routine. Investing in a pedometer may help in terms of motivation, but generally it is advised that walking about 5 or more miles a day (10,000+ steps give or take the length of your stride) will help contribute to weight loss and general fitness.

I do own a pedometer at this moment i have used it before but I don't think that its accurate :/ While I walked to school last semester, I used my pedometer and I used a pedometer app on my itouch and I had two different results .... any recommendation to a pedometers ? Thx for the help :)

Hey domi,

I have lost over 50 pounds in the last 5 months, and I started with walking! If you can walk at a brisk pace, it will help as well. What about showing facility, or gym facility at the campus? One thing you can do, is walk fast (on the way there), and then take a quick shower to be clean for your classes!

Walking is not only a great exercise for maintaining health its also one of the best exercises to help control weight. Many people trying to lose weight often perform an exercise they believe burns more calories and wonder why after a few weeks they hardly see any results.

Don't want to sound negative ,but your body will soon adapt to you walking the same distance every day . Your basically be training your body to burn less calories every day you walk. Yes you will be in the "fat burning zone" and its 10 times better than not walking to school dont get me wrong as its still good for you and your heart and lungs etc ,but dont rely on it for fat loss . A good diet will get your weight down more than anything .

Now if you made your walk into an interval session every morning then IMO you would be laughing
.
Ie walk /Jog/Sprint etc This wont allow your body to adapt etc as opposed to staying the same pace for 5-6 miles . Its like putting a car on cruise control , The car will burn fuel at a much slower rate than if it was accelerating every 2 Min's .

Eat after 6 Please !!! ... Just dont eat carbs after 6 try and consume just fat and protein . You dont want to go long periods without food . Your body will start storing fat because your body will be thinking I might not get any food for the next 5-6 hours I better keep some extra to cover me. Get where Im coming from ? Eat regular and keep your metabolism Firing

hmmm yes I would b walking that distance plus in school stairs nd stuff and work and exercise ... you really think that my body will get used to doing everything ? i mean Friday-Sunday i will be doing just exercise and dieting.
Oh and about the 6pm eating ... I will probably snack on some veggies ;) Thank You for the advice :)

You body will adapt to the walk . It cannot adapt to running up the stairs etc. Thats what Im saying , If you run up and down the stairs 10 times then that would be classed as Interval Training . You body Just chucks calories at you ,as its an explosive movement etc . It doesnt have chance to workout how Much energy it needs etc . And it doesnt have time to start using the more effecient Oxygen fat "burning zone" Pathway as energy . When you walk long distances (Endurance) Your body adapts and becomes good at covering that long distance whilst expanding minimum energy (calories)

Don't be afraid to eat after 6 . Honestly. Just eat Protein and Fat .Protein doesnt make you fat . Your body will always have a use for it .Where as carbs are fuel and if its not needed it gets converted to fat...

That's an amazing distance! Regardless of weight loss, walking that distance, that many times a week- will strengthen your heart, lungs, and will probably help balance your weight! I'm impressed! I'm looking to train for a 5k run in a few months, and now I feel it's a bit peasly! :)

I think Jay brings up some excellent points! Switching up your physical activity is helps you lose weight faster, as your body will become use to a regular routine! As for eating after 6- great advice Jay! I didn't even know that *cue my evening snack* :)

Good luck Domi!! And good luck in college :)

Yes your body will get used to walking BUT if you pick up your pace then you will burn calories. besides you will burn calories walking no matter what.. your body isn't going to stop burning calories just because you get used to the walk. my grandfather went from 300 lbs to 150 all by walking.. he still walks every day about 5 miles he is 65 years old.

Yes you will burn a few extra calories . Lets say you burn a 100 calories sitting on your sofa , You would only burn say an extra 15-20 Calories By walking . Walking for weight loss is minimal . There's 3000 calories in 1 lb of fat . So your grandfather would have had to been walking miles upon miles a week To purely lose weight from walking . You do lose muscle from Running / Face pace walking etc . That might also contribute to his loss on the scales . But that's not a good thing losing muscle , you want muscle to burn calories . I guarantee you it was your grandfathers diet that lost him a 150lbs more than anything.

Picking up the pace ... Your body will get used to that as well . Its never ending with endurance type training . Your body will always adapt and will always get good at burning minimum calories Whilst covering long distances .
