Vegetarian Club!

I love tofu! There hasn't really been any bending or shaping involved yet.. but I've mastered the art of frying it. In garlic and herbs is so good :D

So far I've used it in pasta making, ice cream, dips, cakes, and drinks.

This stuff is so versatile. I can't really stand it plain. I do like it baked with Hot sauce and garlic butter. hmmm...

Hey,

I'm Tamara. I'm 30, though closer to 31. I've been vegetarian since I was 11 and vegan since I was 16. I find factory farming utterly disgusting on every level and want no part of it.

I eat a ton of soy, though not entirely by choice. Since I'm vegan, it's about the best protein source I can find. I eat tofu and soy protein powder every day. The protein powder takes some getting used to, and I really don't want to continue to eat as much as I eat now when I'm down to my goal.

I'm an excellent baker of all things vegan, especially gourmet cakes. I've not made a cake in months though.

At this point I'm about 3/4 raw and I don't consume anything heavily processed, with the exception of about 3 diet cokes a week. I know it's terrible for me, but I drink about a gallon of water a day, so I don't think those diet cokes will kill me. I'd love to share recipes at some point, but I'm not really doing "recipes" right now. Most of my foods are raw, and those that are cooked are whole. I count calories religiously and weigh all my food, so making things with multiple ingredients just complicates matters.

I run, ride my bike, and read. I used to write a fair amount, but lately I don't have anything to say. Oh, and I hang out with my dogs and my boyfriend a lot. I also go to see bands sometimes, but not that often. Lately most of my social activities have been revolving around doing outdoor/physical activities. A lot of my social activities used to revolve around food. Not so much anymore, thankfully.

Ganygreenbean: Prior to the advent of the Tofurkey or the Un-turkey, my dad made me a killer tofu-turkey. It took him hours and hours. Fortunately for him, the Tofurkey came out the following year. After that one tofu-turkey, he said he'd never make another one because making it was "back-breaking kitchen labor." Anyway, your comment reminded me of the tofu-turkey, because you basically take a whole ton of tofu, mash it up really well so it's almost a paste, and then press it into a bowl. Then you end up with this giant tofu dome, which you then braise, stuff, and roast. And then you can add "legs" using wooden skewers. If I can find the recipe, I'll pm it to you.

Tamara

I love tofu, though I haven't exactly mastered using it, I definitely need some more practice. I have recently had a love affair with the seasoned baked tofu. Its great for chopping up a bit and throwing into a wrap or stir fry. My next conquest is a tofu scramble. There is this great vegetarian cafe near my school that has a tofu breakfast scramble to die for. I'm still trying to figure out the spice combination but I'm determined to figure it out.

As far as protein powder is concerned, what is everyone's favorite?

Hi

Im not a vegetarian, but I hope to be, I really believe it is the way to go.. I'm not here yet but I'm on my way..

I've been a vegetarian for a little over a year now, primarily because I decided I'd rather consume my fats in chocolate and butter than through chicken. I have a problem feeling full and feel that I've turned into a carboholic in the past year. I never eat pasta, but could eat bread and rice everyday. Help. Here are my stats:

26/F
5'7"
Currently 186 lbs
Goal weight is 140 lbs

yay theres more of us!

ive been veggie for 13 ist years and vegan for 5 months!!

i absolutley ADORE tofu. theres so much you can do with it. ill list some another time :) the one thing that pisses me off is when you say your vegan people that say "err what DO you eat" well. all the nice foods, all the natural foods!! PROPER food not junk food rubbish. i found since i turned vegan i eat MORE food and a greater variety. and feel a lot better for it too.

im vegan cos ... well. i dont wanna go on about it but factory farming...you can guess the rest of the story. the idea of encouraging it, or taking part in it, goes against my ethics. even when i turned veggie at around age 8 i wanted to be vegan ||(my best mate in school was born and bred vegan her mum explained all to me) i saw a programme about chicken and ever since then, ive never eaten meat. i wanted to be vegan but many things stopped me, like health issues with my kidneys, being a bit young and not having backing from parents or enough knowledge. but now im ready for it and its the best decision ive made!!

oh yeah and scrambled tofu? heres how i have it...

lightly fry some red onion and mushroom, add the tofu, fly until browning, add a bit of paprika, some soy sauce and pepper. add salt if you want but i dont use salt in food. taste well nice with spinach, leek and carrot salad with pitta breads to stuff it in. also add some chopped tomatos for a sweeter flavour.

this is my favourte tofu recepie, it took quite a few goes to get it tasteing real good but once you get the hang of it damn its good :)

Ooh that tofu scramble sounds excellent, I'm going to have to try that soon.

Readytolose34: I totally know what you mean about having trouble feeling full. Here are my "tricks" -
* Eat a really big salad (just a little dressing). It puts a lot of volume in your stomach to fill you up without adding many calories. Food like tomatoes and cucumbers are also good to fill you up because of the high water content.
* Drink a huge glass of water a half hour before eating (or whenever you're craving something)
* apples and pears are great and take a while to eat so the fullness can register
* plan out portions ahead of time and then brush your teeth right after
* sugarfree gum
* if you need flavor, drink tea
* If you want carbs, mix all sorts of veggies into your rice/pasta so if you can eat more for the same amount of pasta
* using fitday really helps me to plan my day in a way that is more nutritionally balanced

am about to cook dinner fellow veggies and vegans should check this out, its my favourite recepie...

boil some brown wholegrain rice NO SALT (can add it if you want but i think salts horrible).

while that is boiling towards the end, steam some mixed veg (i steam them by putting my colander over the rice and putting the veg in there and then lid over the colander - economic or what) veg i'm having tonight is broccoli, green beans and mini sweetcorn things, mmmm

once the veg and rice is done, drain the rice and toss the veg in some herbs or sauce (again modify to what you like but im having mint, garlic powder, low salt soy sauce and cider vinegar)

put the rice in a bowl, add sultanas/raisins, grated carrot and if you like some herbs or sauce (i have it bare) and toss until mixed. also can add nuts, walnut bits and almonds go down well but only occasionally ;)

serve with toasted pita bread and chopped orange.

can modify it by adding beans/lentils to the rice mix, which always goes down well.

this is my favourite meal in the world (after curry but i dont eat that anymore) its really nice with some nuts sometimes too and for lunch toast a pitta and add the rice mix with some green salad and falafel for a tasty lunch :)

Anyone gettting a tofurkey for thanksgiving?

I think I want to get one for my boyfriend and I... Having only two people eat it really turns me off though, since the ones I've seen are expensive. I've never had fake turkey, and am really interested in trying it.

Is it good?

Sounds delicious! I wish I could cook my own meals, but I never have the time/ingredients... I personally don't like most fake meat, as it tastes quite bad, but I like some fake chicken. I don't know which brands are the best.

hi
im kind of a vegerterian too i dont eat meat or products with animal deriviatives in ie gelatine/animal rennet

ive been vegetarian since i was 11 so about 12 years approx but when i was 20 i got diagnosed with an illness and now i cant eat foods that are high in fat so things like cheese, full fat milk cream etc
so i now eat fish as my diet is soooooo limited and i didnt want to become a vegan

anyway i chose to become a vegertarian because i dont agree with the methods of the food industry

i hate tofu and thou ive tried it many times i just cant stand it lol
i used to eat 'quorn' products but now they disagree with me

so i buy soya products and our local supermarkets have large ranges of soya bacon sausages burgers etc

i mainly eat fruit n veg and natural foods in their raw form ie nuts pulses etc

my weight loss was kicked started by an ex and now ive moved on, to lose weight for me but i am really struggling as my work life is a bit unstable and i seem to be turning to food more but im trying hard not to but im def losing motivation by the day !!!!!

well thats me and i hope to find some good recipes so i can widen my eating habits lol as ive found after 6mths my diet has become routine and needs to be ammended to prevent lack of motivation and to make it a bit more varied and interesting

What is everyones favorite fake meat brand? I have had the smartdeli turkey but its so high in sodium. I really like the tomato basil pizza and mushroom lovers burgers from morningstar. Any suggestions?

fake meat scares me...i can think of nothing worse to eat than fake bacon...except the real thing. i can see its uses, but personally i dont touch the stuff, ive been vegan for half a year and veggie many many years and i dont want to be reminded of dead animals when im eating :angelsad2:

some of the quorn stuff is ok, but i cant eat it cos its got egg innit, some of it doesnt look like meat or labbeled like meat but some of it makes me sick.

Hi, I'm new to the forum and I've just spotted this thread. Is it alright if I join?

Here are a few details about myself:
Age: 42
Mum to three kids
Height: 5'4" / 1m63
Current Weight: 184lbs / 13st2 / 83.5kg
Goal Weight: 119 / 8st7 / 54kg
Vegetarian since I was 18 => 24 years

I'm always nervous about calling myself a veggie as some people are VERY strict and there's a lot of stuff I eat which is not, technically, vegetarian. For example, milk, eggs, all sorts of cheeses... occasionally I'll eat fish if I have no other choice. In the summer, I'll even eat vegetables which have been barbequed on the same grill as the meat (I know lots of veggies that would rather DIE than do that!).

Like some of you, I sometimes cook meat for others - my hubby, for example. However, I cook it badly :reddevil: !!!

Well, that's it. See ya around :seeya:

Yay for Veggies!

Name: Jessie
Age: 25
Height: 5' 1.5"
Starting Weight: 174 lbs
Current Weight: 158 lbs
Goal Weight: 125 lbs
Vegetarian since: I was 11 (that was the soonest my mom would let me!) Sooo.. 14 years! I'm lacto/ovo, don't eat cheeses with rennet, or gelatin in general, stuff like that. I have been vegan in the past (for about 2 years), but am not currently. I love being a veggie though, I always found it unnatural and well, gross, to eat meat/fish.. even as a child. I've grown up this way, so I don't have too much of an issue out, if places don't offer me stuff they're usually okay with figuring something out with me.
Weight Loss Plan Began: Oct., not sure of the date
Hobbies/Work: I'm going to college, working at a Dept. store, raising my 3-year-old (she's a baby veggie! Her Dr. is super supportive too, I love her!) I love reading.. and tons of other stuff, haha, but this is getting long for an intro!

Oh, and I adore tofu! And tempeh, and all sorts of fun things.

Introducing myself:
Name: Casey
Age: 20
Height: 5'7"
Starting Weight: 160-162
Current Weight: 153?
Goal Weight: not sure- I just want to get in better shape and lose some body fat
Vegetarian since: July of 2006
Weight Loss Plan: Eating healthier and cutting out fast food, training for my second half-marathon, cutting back on alcohol
Hobbies/Work: I love to run and participate in road races (I've done 5k, 10k and half-marathons), read, study English and Philosophy, cook, go see movies and plays, and spend time with friends, family, and my boyfriend. I attend school full-time and work at the ID card office on campus.

I quit eating meat in July of 2006 but then re-introduced fish into my diet in October of 2007. I did this because I was training for my first half-marathon and I wanted to ensure that I had enough healthy fats and protein to take on this endeavor. I try to limit the amount of animal products I eat, like cheese, gelatin and ice cream. I don't drink milk or eat yogurt. I don't really "fit" into any specific category food-wise.

As far as fake meats go...I like Morningstar's fake chicken the best.
