Vegetarian Club!

Just checking in with the rest of the veggies around here! On the 4th, my fiance insisted that I try his poblano and cheddar hamburger. It sounded like it might actually be good. But I forgot that ground beef tastes like dirt! That is one meat that I cannot understand why it is so popular...yeck!

Did anybody grill anything wonderful on the 4th? We were at another person's house an I didn't feel like doing much, so I just ate potato salad and the like. When I grill at my own house, I go all out though!

I was camping =D so i didnt really get to cook that much, just threw a veggie patty on the fire it was all good lol

Do you make your own veggie patties or do you buy them? When I was a kid, we made our own for camping trips since you couldn't get them in the store. Now there are SO many different kinds! I've had some pretty bad ones though. The first Boca burgers were horrible, but they've improved the recipe a lot.

Depends. I was with my dads family so i bought them, If i was with my mom or sisters we'd make them they are wonderful.

I use to HATE the boca now i like them =p just the boca grillers or chicken patties but the spicy chick is too much

I also decided on going vegan this week.
since my sisters are my mom is trying but she has an addiction to food lol

I'm new guys! Here are my specs. I've been a vegetarian for almost 10 years.

Introducing myself:
Name: Sami
Age: 22
Height: 5'5"
Current Weight: 185
Goal Weight: 150
Vegetarian since: This will be my 9th year!
Weight Loss Plan Began: A long time ago...commitment to my plan? TODAY!
Hobbies/Work: I'm a veterinary technician. I also, if you didn't know, own two wonderful American Pitbull Terriers that I work in weightpull. I'm trying to incorperate a view for health in my pets and in myself. I'm doing great at keeping my dog at an ideal weight (he lost 12 lbs between March and July of this year, lol, what happened to ME?!).

Welcome Sami! I'm also a member of the dog walking club here. We seem to be losing members lately so I'd love it if you joined me!

http://weight-loss.fitness.com/club/15061-dog-walkers-club.html

We have group challenges to walk distances between cities. It's been motivating to have to report how far I walk my pooch. I used to think I walked her a lot - but it turns out I frequently skipped the planned walks. But I'm on track now!

I'm afraid we don't do more than 4-6 miles a week (lately, we haven't even had time for that!). A rather small amount in the grand scheme :( I've peeked in...I might stop by soon. Thanks for the invite!

Sami

Maybe I'll start walking my dogs =) Ihave a toy poodle who just started his medicine which might make him gain weight, And a boxer/lab/germanshapard mix named kiroku

i just went vegan about a week after my last post, so its been about a month and its so much easier than i thought it would be. i used to eat sooooo much cheese and disliked most vegetables but i think my taste buds changed or something because i like vegetables now. and as an added bonus i lost ten pounds. yay!

Way to go windmill! I just don't think I could ever give up eggs...especially because I have 20 chickens and I would have no idea what to do with all the eggs if I didn't eat them!

Are you taking any B-12 supplements? I tried raw veganism for a month due to digestion issues (turned out to be gall stones) and I took one then after doing quite a bit of research on vegans and B-12. I do know vegans that don't bother with it, but it seemed like a good idea to me.

Name: Logan
Age: 19
Height: 5'8"
Current Weight: 173
Goal Weight: 135
Vegetarian since: I was 12 so about 7 years now
Weight Loss Plan Began: A long time ago but I just started getting serious about it.
Hobbies/Work: I'm a sophomore in college. A chem major with a double minor in German and Russian. We don't really have time for hobbies at school, like none. I like swimming and reading, but don't really get a chance to during the year.

Hey logan! welcome =D

Ive been doing bad the past few days because i've been at concerts and out with my friends. found out 6 hours in a concert with 300+ people in one room with no air conditioner andno water makes you lose 4 pounds. lol!

Hey guys, also new here. I am not a real vegetarian, but I hardly eat any meat and I adore vegetables. I hope this qualifies me for this club.

I am from Europe and must say that eating healthy vegetarian food is quite expensive here. So I am thinking of growing my own small garden of vegetables :) Any ideas of what to grow to get out maximum?

Every time I've traveled in Europe, it has been really hard for me to find vegetarian food. England seems to have it figured out, but Germany and Austria were the worst for me!

For a vegetable garden, it depends on what you are looking for. The most calorie dense crop you can grow is potatoes. That means that an acre of potatoes would feed more people than an acre of any other food. But potatoes are boring! The least calorie dense crop is squash, but I grow far more squash than potatoes. You can grow varieties of squash that are simply not available in the grocery because they don't store well.

Ok, so my recommendations for a first time gardener are almost always squash, tomatoes and peppers. They are all easy to grow (if you have the right weather - I think Slovenia would be warm enough) and they are so much better than store varieties. Plus, one or two plants of each of those will likely provide all the squash, tomatoes and peppers you can possibly eat by yourself!

I am trying to grow all of the vegetables for my family. I am currently growing turnips, corn, okra, peanuts, tomatillos, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, summer squash, winter squash, black eyed peas, green beans, watermelon, sweet potatoes, muskmelons and spinach (I think I got them all!). Our potato crop failed this year and that was a real drag. We've also had to buy onions and most of the lettuce we've been eating. But we probably grow about 50% of the vegetables for the family now. It's fun!

Thanks for this info. I was thinking of growing tomatoes and pepper too. I can never eat enough of them :) I will probably add eggplant and some sort of squash, maybe beans. I am not very fond of potatoes so I will skip these.
It is a little late for the most of these vegetables now, but I believe I can make it work somehow.

My brother has a wonderful garden.. He loves growing peas and tomatoes the best because we eat them faster

Welcome Erika! Good job on the switch to hardcore vegetarianism! I've been one forever so I love to hear the people become one. Good luck!

hey erika! Its great that your here ifyou have any questions or anything at all feel free to ask! It can be hard to go full vegetarian I know but im glad you did it!

I have gone through phases where I am vegetarian. I find it hard as I am the cook for the family and well, the family demands.. MEAT!!! It would be great to have outside support.

Lady, I concur that it's difficult. I still cook meat for my family. I look for easy to follow directions and recipes I used to use when I was a meat eater. Believe it or not, I won a chili cook-off about 5 years ago...with chili I couldn't eat or even try, lol. It IS possible to make tastey food without trying it. What I usually do is divide portions of meat up when we have just purchased it from the store and use it in my vegetarian meals. For example, I made a spinach and mushroom omelette for me today...and my fiance had one that was bacon (bits) and sausage with cheese.

I also find that the "meatless" products go over well with Jason if I don't tell him they're meatless. The hotdogs, don't even bother. But vegetarian cheese and corndogs...the meatless ribs. Some of the stuff Jason will eat without griping. I can also make "hamburger helper" with vegetarian meat (go easy on it) and he can't tell. I usually wind up making home cooked meals at least 2 out of 4 meals...

For the most part if you don't push too hard (my mother always had a "you have to try, chew and SWALLOW just one bite of everything I made" rule...that'll quell the picky eaters!) and most family members will at least give it a shot. For years my own mother thought that vegetarian food was absolutely disgusting...just couldn't stomach the idea of consuming so much soy. Just this year, I took her out for sushi...and she tried edamame...and was stunned that it wasn't bad. Now she's striking it out on her own to try to sample new foods that AREN'T meat based. All you have to do is open a door...(and if you're trying something brand new that might not go over so well...do it when you're home alone).
