Useless con-artist personal trainers

So, despite my wife dropping 20+ pounds since July first, and like 8% bodyfat, she couldn't get it through her head that she was making good progress, so when the personal trainer team at our gym 'offered' her a free assessment, she took it.

We agreed she wouldn't sign up for anything, just check em out.

The next day she was signed up for a full year of personal training sessions...at the minimum once per month, for $30 a month. It was $40, but the 'boss man trainer' came in and lowered it to $30 and then said "how can you put a price on health" to really guilt trip her into it.

UGH.

Furthermore, the 2 days after her 'assessment' training session, she can't move her friggin arms because they had her doing tons of bicep curls and lat pulldowns.

UGH

Today she had her first real session, and she comes home and tells me "he's got me doing 3 sets of 15 reps so I don't put on too much muscle"

God damnit

So now she's apologizing for thinking my routine somehow wasn't good enough, and I pointed out the fact that personal trainers aren't trained on nutrition...my wife however is a certified Dietary Technician (about halfway to registered Dietician). So between her formal schooling and everything I read on the side, we have that covered.

So now I have her checking to see if she can cancel this contract so she's only screwed outta first session/last session + processing fees, instead of the whole $360 + processing fees. It pisses me off that they pretty much cornered my wife and con'd her into a year's worth of trainer assistance.
Their philosophy is to hit each muscle group once a week for 15 reps. WTF?!?!!?

Do you want to have him whacked?

it'd be a simple task for most of the ninjas i know...

Thats freaking nuts! Tell them your moving away from your currrent address.. like have her tell him you got transferred, gotta move in two weeks or such.. hahaa.. and if they ask for proof, find a good friend outta state and get their address.. or if you have a dr. friend, have him write a letter that for whatever reason, she cant exercise right now for health reasons, or that shes fixing to have surgery or that she is pregnant!!! :D

!! Get outta that! Run Fast!

well turns out she has 3 business days, from Friday, to cancel via certified mail.
so she's mailing off the letter right now, and calling the trainer to let him know to not plan on her anymore.
she wants to avoid conflict, so she's telling them she simply can't afford it.

my guess is this group of trainers did the 'get your certification in a Saturday afternoon' type seminar.

Step 1: tell fat chicks to do 3 sets of 15 reps, all machines
Step 2: ...
Step 3: Profit!

Sounds like they put a hard sell on her.

Least now she'll have some faith in your advice eh ;)

Thats a lot of money though. They mention the words 'nutrition' and 'cardio' to her even?

BTW, big up your wife for us, thats great progress.

Honestly, none of this suprises me.

Most of the trainers are out there to make money, which we all have to do to earn a living, however there is a fine line between the ones who do this for the money and the ones who do this as their passion.

I'm happy she was able to cancel and hopefully will take your advice from here on in as she has a great source of knowledge right in her own home.

Rofl.

Well, considering my wife has always been heavy...isn't really meant to be slender (broad shoulders, wide hips...very 'German' woman build)...she's extra sensitive and less patient than me, even though she's made better progress than me.

To add insult to injury, this training outfit is a place I emailed twice when they had a wanted ad put up at the gym. I didn't send a resume, but actually was asking what 'experience' was needed. I didn't get a reply to either of my emails.

Adding all this up, I can see why they are a shoddy outfit, and I'm glad they didn't waste my time replying to my emails...I wouldn't wanna work for them.

My goal is to help the people that want help, and I may as well make money doing it. Rather than "make money, and if I help someone, neat-o"

That is exactly how I feel about it Malk I couldn't have put it better. Of course there is nothing wrong about making a living doing something you love and helping people. But making money at the expense of others, far to common.

I also enjoyed the part about the "head boss man" coming in and lowering the price. Reminds me of my experience when I was buying a car recently. I had stated what I would pay and that it was a fair price for the car and its condition. The guy said he couldn't do it, but wanted to go check with his manager. Manager walks in and says the best he can do was 1000 dollars higher than I was willing to pay. I said no thanks, and left. Bought me another car at a great price elsewhere. For the next two weeks they called my phone telling me how low they could go. I picked up the phone the last time and said "yeah sorry guys, I got me a car with the no bull**** "lets tag team" special!" It was a good day.

Its the common bait and switch technique.
