trying to fight the urge to binge

Hi! I am a 19 yr old female, 5'4" and 150lbs. My biggest problem is lack of self control. I am constantly battling against the urge to binge, perhaps motivated by my lack of cooking experence and laziness.

I have been living by myself for the past 7 wks and I have 3 more wks until I go back home. Thus, I don't want to buy any more groceries in case I won't be able to finish them. I have chicken breasts, oatmeal, eggs, and oatmeal left. If I keep to this diet, I should be eating healthy, but my desire to eat pizzas, subs, etc is draining my wallet and adding to my bulging cheeks. I need to stop myself from ordering food, but I'm an emotional eater and being here by myself, and returning tired from work is not helping. Lately, I've been ordering food almost every other day.

Well, there's a rant as an introduction! I sound very unmotivated and lacking in self-discipline but hopefully, with this website, I will be able to slowly more control over my life. I am going to set my alarm for 6 AM tomorrow and go swimming before work. Hopefully, I won't snooze too much.

Hi!

I'm in the same boat with ya. I have many urges to eat loads at a time, and it's affecting my body and wallet.

I guess you could try just not carrying money around with you. I find that when I have a lot of money in my wallet I tend to spend it on food more easily.

For me, a lack of cooking experience has nothing to do with wanting to order pizza. I can cook just about anything and it comes out real nice, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think about unhealthy food often. It’s especially hard to resist when I am extremely tired and hungry, then I am more apt to get whatever is most convenient (like ordering in); or if I am in the shopping center, I am likely to buy junk food. It’s an ongoing battle and I don’t expect I will ever fully shake my desire for unhealthy foods.

Maybe you could look up some recipes for the food you are ordering and make it yourself, then you can monitor the calories. When a recipe calls for butter or oil, switch to non-stick spray. If it calls for milk, use skim. Rather than frying something, bake it. Try making a cheese-less pizza, I know it sounds insane but you can make the dough, sauce, then just pile on some veggies (bell peppers, mushrooms, onions) and bake away. It’s actually quite good and it curbs the craving temporarily. If you want a rootbeer float, have one – diet root beer and a single scoop of low fat vanilla frozen yogurt. If you are looking for quick and easy ways to add to your meals, try using garlic powder on your baked chicken, or adding fruit to your oatmeal in the mornings. It really does make a big difference.

Wishing you the best of luck :)

3 weeks is a long time... 3 days I might understand... but 3 weeks, you can go grocery shopping... it's way to convenient an excuse... and what you enjoy it sounds liek you're trying to punish yourself by eatinb boring foods...

I might have a helpful idea

So you like pizza and other quick foods but don't want to cook... a cheaper and much more calorie friendly alternative to ordering out is to buy frozen foods that you can heat up in the microwave. If the idea of buying diet ones like Lean Cuisine or Healthy Choice isn't appaealing, what about stouffers? They make great pizzas, paninis, subs, etc and all for less calories than what you'd get at a fast food place or a restaurant. Also, what works for me when I'm really hungry is to have snacks like 100 calorie bags of pocorn or low calorie granola bars (the good kind with chocolate, penaut butter, etc) handy around the house so I can munch on something while I'm cooking dinner. you're going to get bored with just oatmeal and chicken and it'll be easier to binge, so take a trip to the grocery store and look for some quick snacks that are still "healthy" to get you through your cravings. Hope that helps :)

thanks for all your encouragement! I actually did wake up at 6AM today and went swimming before work as i had hoped to. Today, I had cream of wheat for breakfast, chicken breast for lunch, and 1 slice of pizza for dinner with colleagues (I didn't want to be rude and not eat it, but maybe i'm just making up excuses). My cravings are the strongest around 5 to 10 PM but im going to try to fight it!

Try buying flowers or congratulating yourself with a massage or manicure after 2 weeks of avoiding fast food. In short, anything that feels like a treat but doesn't involve stuffing your face. :)
