Trops Diary

Nah, I didn't sign up for anything. My sister and mother keep asking me, but I'm just happy pushing myself now.

There is a big race next September that I'm thinking about. It's 50 miles and a team of 8 runners do it. There are 8 siblings in my family ranging from 42 to 27. I was thinking it would be cool for all of my brothers and sisters to do it. My one sister said that she would do it if all the others signed on, but she was thinking that someone would back out. Well, I talked to my one sister in Canada yesterday and she said that she's in. That was the last hold out. So, now I'm going to see what it entails.

Re: big relay race in September--DO IT!

This is bullshit! Sorry, but with your dedication and frequency of runs, why the hell wouldn't you sign up for a race? you scared??? WHAT ABOUT THE T-SHIRT????

Basically it comes down to this. I work most weekends. I have one weekend off every 8 weeks. When I'm working the shift change over is at 7:30 AM so it's usually too late to get to a race, or too early to finish one. If I'm working the evening shift I start at 2:30 and if I go to a race, then it means that the time I usually spend with my wife and kids, I'm spending going to a race. Sure it usually takes less then an hour, start to finish, but what do I need that for. I'd rather make waffles with the kids and go running on my lunch break.

Perhaps it is a lame excuse, or maybe I'm reaching a bit, but I also don't see a race as a big motivator for me right now. Now a half marathon or this 50 mile race next year, now that would be a motivator. There is a Long Island half/full marathon in May. I might sign up for that, but I'd have to take a vacation day for it (which I would).

...you know the cutest thing! My little brother,....3 years old now.....ran his FIRST 1k RACE before turning 3!!!! It was adorable :beating:!!!! He even trained....LOL...believe it or not!!! LOL....My mom and stepdad would take him to the park a couple blocks away, with the soccer ball and he would run about 1 mile! .....OH man, I could EAT HIM UP, he looked too cute!

...I understand what you say about work.....it is tough....Work Schedules suck to fit in extra activities sometimes without having to PRE PLAN forever in anticipation!!!

..Have you ever thought of maybe making it a family affair to do a race here or there??!?! Maybe they would be interested....and maybe not! I do know and Understand them, if NOT, cause I used to HATE :reddevil: it before!!! LOL!!!
...worth a thought though....:)

It sucks for weekends, but it's really good for other things. The kids are off from school tomorrow, and I have off during the day. It's one big play day with dad. I can go running in the neighborhood when other people are working. I can go biking at the park when they don't charge for parking (just on the weekends). I'm here when they get home from school and get the homework done. I can do grocery shopping during the day. There are all kinds of benefits, but yeah, I am the king of excuses.

It is worth a thought. I try to get the kids doing things by example. Last week we all went to the track and the kids had fun running a lap and me timing them. Damn, those little legs move fast. My son was doing a quarter in 2 min and that is with stopping to do somersaults along the way.

I'm just not the pushing dad. If they want to do something I want it to be offered to them, but only if they want. Once they sign on, though, they have to follow through with their commitment.

I agree Trops. My oldest plays... Soccer, Flag Football, Hockey, Baseball... If he is really into something, I'll play a lot of it with him, as well as supply the needed "tools" to play his best and have fun. I'll flood the backyard in the winter for a backyard rink for hockey... well, that's kind of more for me :D, I take him to the batting cages... Same with my daughter Lilli... she loves to dance, so I made her room up like a ballet studio, go with her to her practices... I'll do the same for my youngest when he's into what ever! I hear you about seeing commitments through too. If they sign up for a sport/activity, and don't want to do it anymore... They will finish that season or session for sure. Always teaching them something right??

No kidding! I don't think my father has ever even seen me dance. and I've been doing it for about 18 years.
you two are great, talk about some lucky kids. :D

I don't speak for Trops... just stealing his thread is all :D... but I feel the time is flying by way to fast... I don't want to miss a thing... and who they become will be if not the biggest, tied for, the greatest accomplishment of my life!! I have other goals mind you, but their accomplishments, that I helped nurture and grow, will be amazingly fullfilling to me as well!
