Training to run

I am a 39, almost 40, year old female who had a total hip replacement a year ago. I was able to run, cheer, jump, etc until I was a teenager, but by that time my hip began to get worse. I had the surgury last year and I feel like a NEW person!! So.... I want to run!! BUT I am so out of shape that it's not even funny lol I have been doing pilates for abs, upper body, and lower body for the past couple of weeks and am adding walking a mile starting tomm... I appreciate and welcome any other ideas on "training" or strengthening exercises to do to help get in shape for a run :)

Hey, welcome to the forum!

You're very young to have already had a total hip replacement, but I'm glad to hear that it's working well for you!

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!

Start easy with walking and listen to your body. When you are completing 1 mile comfortably, add another. When you can do 2 miles, begin to add in some light jogging, but only for short distances. If you feel pain, stop and talk with your doctor. Over time, you will add more jogging during your walk until you reach your goal. Consider hiring a trainer to give additional guidance, but make sure that you work with your doctor or therapist closely on this.

I was born with a dislocated hip and it was put back in place when I was a year old, but... 38-39 years ago they did the best they could. As my body grew it became worse and caused my leg to eventually be 1" shorter than the other. And after the 38-39 years of grinding, bone on bone, full of arthritis and bone spurs the dr's finally agreed to do the surgury. They still didn't want to because of my age but said that if it was effecting my quality of life he would do it. So at the time I had a broken ankle, due to my hip causing me to fall. I chose surgury!! Thanks for the concern and I will keep posting. I am beginning to walk tomm, had a rough last week, had a couple funerals to attend. :(

Thanks for the tips!! I plan to keep my surgeon updated...

I'm sorry to hear that you've had to go to funerals recently, that's always a very tough time.

I hope walking goes well for you this week!

Its great that you have got a new lease on life and i hope you find what you are looking for here in the forum. Start a diary in the weight loss diary section. I liked to log what i eat and list my exercise but you can write what you like. If yo'uve got weight to lose, then i strongly recommmend listing in detail what you eat on a daily basis. That way you can keep tabs and if things don't change, its easier to work out why.

I should say that i run for my exercise. I like it. I think its the only exercise that actually gives you an endorphine high. I am not sure if that is a fact but its what i've noticed.

Given your history, i don't feel i'm in a position to tell you much at this stage but if you start keeping a diary and reporting on how things are going, you never know. I may know the answer to your problem or question.

AThanks PLBfitness :) AND actually I was sick most of the week... Summer cold, Yuck!! And my daughter started school today so...I will begin walking Monday Morning... Thank Fortyfour... I greatly appreciate all he help I can get. I will begin my jouraling monday as well, I agree, I think it helps when you write everything down... Hope everyone has a GREAT weekend!! I know I will,

AWow you have had a major op at such a young age. I'm glad to hear the benefits you feel after having it.
I have tried for months to run. I just can't do it at all. I can barely run for a minute before having to stop and walk plus I would never.try often enough so I never see any progress.
I have found a running club in my area for all abilities. I'm gonna pop by the studio tomorrow and check it out. It's £25 a month for.two classes a week which is kinda reasonable. I'm gonna see if they'll give me one session for free to try it out. I'd hate to pay the monthly fee and then go and feel inadequate compared to everyone else.
I know you may be experiencing some discomfort just now, but once you've built up to a jog ect maybe u can check if there's similar clubs in ur area.

Run groups can be a great way to stay motivated with running. They can also be good places to learn how to avoid injuries. I hope it works out for you!
