toning...

This is the first time I've posted in about 2-3 months.. when I first posted I weighed about 180 pounds and I'm now down to 162 which I'm pretty happy about. I still need to lose a few more pounds before I can consider myself "slim". Anyway, over the last few months I've just been focusing on losing fat, but now I'm interested in adding weight lifting to my "routine". I started doing pushups and crunches and doing curls before I get a membership to the gym.

I guess my questions are:
Am I wasting my time by doing pushups and crunches and curls every day? Or should I focus on .. say.. pushups and crunches one day, and curls another day? Should I avoid heavy cardio on days that I chose to work out? Are there any other helpful exercises I could be doing with just a set of dumbells?

I'm not looking to be a mini-Hulk Hogan here, just have an all-around toned figure.

Thanks a lot guys (and girls)!

Re: Toning

you should do cardio on days that you don't do any toning exercises. crunches, push-ups, etc. are good, but you should do them in addition to wieght training if you want to tone up. and don't worry, you aren't going to get all jacked by incorporating free wieghts into your routine. (maybe start using a barbell for sqauts & lunges, and a pair of dumbbells for curls, raises & rows.)

thanks! i have one last question.

to my own credit, i don't have a lot of fat on my stomach - a few millimeters probably. Ever since I lost those 20 pounds a couple months ago, I've had a slightly visible "2-pack". My main focus of this toning is to tone my torso (and arms to some extent) and I would like to develop that into a 6 pack. Is the "2-pack" a sign that I just need to lose more weight to get the full 6-pack or is it flawed exercising or not enough exercising? I've only started to do crunches a week or so ago so I'm not expecting great results right now, I just want to know what's going on :) thanks a lot!

I have a 4 pack! :D Getting those lower abs to show is tough. From what I've read the key to a six pack is very healthy eating habits.

how long is it before ur muscles actually increase in mass whilst ur doin ur routines? im askin this cos i have been doin weights and stuff for nesrly 7 weeks now, and my muscles dont look any different, except maybe a few pop up arteries, but nuthin else, i am slim, hmmmm, im confused!
