Toning arms...

Hey, i realise that this is the womans section but i am doing this for my mum coz i couldnt give her a good answer.

She wants to know how to 'firm' up her arm by lifting weights or some other thing...she dont want to do cardio :p (keep in mind that shes not very much over weight )

She was thinking of lifting my 11 lbs weights everyday and she wants to know 'if this does work' how long it will take to firm up?

Thankyou, mum and i really apperciate it :D

The term "firming up" usually means losing fat. To "firm up" her arms, she will need to reduce overall body fat. That is done through proper eating, proper rest, proper cardio and proper strength training. So what is proper anyway? :)

She can firm her muscle by lifting your weights (if that is challenging enough for her). But to get rid of fat in her arms, a reduction of overall body fat is needed.

Since we don't know much about your mom (age, height, weight, current eating habits, current fitness routine, etc) it's a bit hard to give advice.

OK, well mum is earlish 40's though she likes to think shes 25 :p
She is 5'5 and weights 151 lbs.

She eats only about 3 meals a day which i think are ok...but she does have a bit other things here and there. Shes said that if she eats any more then 3 meals a day she puts on weight...probablly because she has a bad metabolism?

She doesnt do any form of fitness, the only thing i guess she really does it run back and forth at school all day because she is a teacher.

She has a bad back to shes not able to lift things above her head other wise she gets migrains and incrediable back pains for days after.

Yeh so with all this informaion do u think u could give us both an idea? Ill check her bf% tonight as i have just got a caliper...my bf% is 9.5% :D

Thanx again

Hi, again.

Seems like your mom (I love the word 'mum'!) needs to develop a good fitness program. It needs to be one she sticks to and enjoys. It also sounds like she could stand to lose a few pounds (as you mentioned she is not terribly overweight).

Her eating could be a bit better. The best way to "increase" metabolism is to eat smaller meals through out the day. 3 meals per day is not optimal for fat loss. 5-6 is much better. Also adding lean muscle mass though strength training is beneficial. Each pound of lean muscle mass burns 35-50 calories per day!

Most women believe eating more and strength training will cause them to add weight and bulk up. That's just not true. We need to eat according to our goals and daily activity level. Also, cardio is important too.

You mom (ahem, mum) can do it. Just get her motivated. Maybe you can start working out with her? I'm sure she would love the extra time with you.
