To those that succeeded...

This is to all the people that had more than 50 pounds to lose. :p

How did you do it ? I need some words of encouragement. What was your mindset going into it ? How did you stay focused? Its a mind game, a tough one at that for alot of us.

I got 70-80 pounds to lose and know what i need to do... i know the math and know what it takes. I really want to get in excellent shape, back to how i use to be in high school.

I've recently had surgery on my cojones and back pain thats preventing me from doing any real exercise, so I'm feeling a little down from having no physical activity, ya know ? Hopefully I can get back into some type of fitness program within the next 1-3 weeks. Before the surgery i played lots of basketball and was fairly active.

I can't sleep worth crap either, just to throw that in. I drank a gallon of water yesterday and thought i was gonna float away. Just bought a bike by the way...

I've got my own idea of a fitness program... but i like to seek wisdom of people that know more than me. When i say diet, i more so mean lifestyle change of eating habits. I'm looking for a lifestyle change in general.

Any ideas of a diet/exercise program that might be good for me considering the lower back pain ?

Hey:

Congrats on what you have lost so far. If your post surgical condition is preventing 'real' exercise, you can always start using the pool for training. You should also be using a downloadable heart rate monitor and keep an acurate accounting of your activity.

Nutrition wise, there are alot of theories, and most will work for specific people. The best thing you can do is get with a professional...its way better than guessing. That's what I did.

My motivation was two fold. first off, I have a 5 year old son and I got dusgusted with myself that every time I went out to play ball with him I had to stop after 15-20 minutes to take a rest and wasn't able to really run around with him without gasping.

Second, I went to buy some new pants for work and I was able to SQUEEZE into a 44 and was bordering a 46. I walked out of the store and did some research, then I stumbled across this site. I sat in the background and read hours upon hours of posts and decided to make a lifestyle change.

My journey started in August of 05, I was 252 pounds and as I mentioned above, a 44-46 waist. I am now down to 209 and comfortably fit into a 34 waste. I have so much energy, I now wear my 5 year old out..LOL My body composition has changed drastically. I wish I had some stats from when I started, but I was in too big of a hurry to start, I overlooked them.

Good luck with your journey, and if you listen to the people on this site and devote the dedication to your program, there is no way you cannot achieve your goals.

On the water intake, your body will get used to it and you won't feel so "floaty" in a few days. Just keep it up, it's so good for you!

Is it an exercise bike or a street bike?

Is your sleep issue due to your pain?

Because of your back I'd say start with swimming. then move to walking, biking, or elliptical for cardio. Be very careful with weights because of your back. You should talk to your doc about it before you do anything. He/she knows best what your body can handle right now.

I'm so sorry you aren't feeling too great, but you can do it! Start slow and work your way up to what you were used to! :)

Thanks for the replies guys... its nice just to get some responses; its very encouraging.

Starting 2/27/06 (tomorrow) im going to start using a mountain bike out on a city bike trail... and as far as lower back pain, its nearly gone now since i posted this originally. I feel more confident that I can get a decent workout in daily. I'm fairly athletic and before the surgery was running 2 miles in about 15.5 minutes, but my feet and lower back would be all messed up the next day cause of my weight.

I ate horrible this weekend. It was sad. I'm what you would call an emotional fitness freak. I love the idea and concept of working out and getting in shape... but if i dont feel like it, theres always tomorrow. :( I need some kind of system that makes me do it no matter what everyday of the year. can i get an amen ?

Check with a physical therapsit about what movements you can do and which ones you cannot do. I am working with a client right now through my online personal training program and he has serious lower back issues. I actually called his physical therapist (since he is a client of mine) and talked with her.

He is not allowed to do any back arching or forward bending. However, it was highly advisable that he work out with weights and cardio. Now you may be different.

Given your posts I would recommend that you have someone that you must answer too- like a trainer. This helps motivate A LOT of people. If you know that I am going to be watching your results and your workouts then you are more inclined to do them.

I would also recommend weights so long as your form is perfect and you know what you can and cannot do. Hope that helps. Good luck!
