Tinysara's weight loss diary extrordinare!

Hey guys.
First off, this diary won't be the greatest, so i'm sorry if i disappoint.

I've struggled with my weight for my entire life. I have always been a little hefty. I am 4'11.5 and 143 pounds, the heaviest I have ever been.

I have never been able to wear skinny jeans, cute riding boots, and other fashionable items because not only am I too short, but I am too fat. So, i'd like to make my width more proportional to my height! according to the BMI and other sources, someone as short as me should be around 100 lbs. I hope thats how low i can go!

My diet has been:
one carb-ish meal in the morning: i find that if i let myself eat carbs early on, i don't crave them at night like a rabid dog. Lately I've been enjoying small breakfast sandwiches: whole grain english muffin, one egg, cheese, and a little bacon.

This keeps me feeling great all morning and day. If i get hungry during the afternoon I have a coffee with skim milk and sugarfree sweetener. Being a student, this also helps me study!!

When I get home at night, I have salmon, chicken, tuna, etc. I am trying to focus on fish and seafood, because I feel the essential oils in them are of utmost importance ( I am studying Biomedical science!). I will also have a bowl of lightly seasoned vegetables or a salad :)

I absolutely do not eat after 8pm! I would say 7, but one of my fitness classes ends at 7 and if i didn't eat after that i would have only had one meal all day!

On to fitness:
I take high intensity Karate classes on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday but I often miss them for other 'more important things'. Aka, i make a lot of excuses. I'm looking to increase my exercising by starting to run at the gym once in a while. I'm thinking I will begin with two miles, and then try to get myself running for the entire two miles. I know this will take a long time, because I get tired running after two minutes.

I have been drinking a lot of water all day (but it makes me pee a lot :() and i'll be drinking a "fibre tea" at night (to get things moving in the bowel area, if you know what i mean!!)

I've kept this up for almost a week so far, and it's been during my busiest school time and 'that time of the month' when cravings are astronomical. If i can get through this week, I can get through any goddamn time of the year. Wish me luck!

Also, my biggest issue is sweets. My passion for sweets knows no bounds. I could eat an entire container of merigues and still be hungry! The hardest thing to let go will be Milk Duds, which I always get at the movies. But i need to force myself to understand that you can watch a movie without snacking at the same time!

If you have any tips for me, i'd love to hear them. I have become absolutely positively inspired by Katie (see before and after photos, you will too) and anytime i feel down, or like cheating, i look at her pictures. I will look like that, i promise!

I'll post how i look now soon enough.

Thanks for reading :D

Sara

Good luck in this... how's it going? This is going on a couple weeks old without an update. I hope it's going well.

First off, even if you don't plan to keep it up, I would recommend getting an account at or (I am moving my food over to Spark now. It's awesome.

Anyway, I recommend getting an account there and just putting in what you might eat in a typical day to make sure you aren't eating too much (doesn't look to be the case) or too little (this looks like a possibility). Yes, you can eat too little. Eat too little and your body starts using your muscle as fuel rather than your fat and that's the exact opposite of what we want.

I'll stop bugging now. Thanks for stopping in on my progress thread! And again, good luck with this. You can definitely do it. We Canucks can do anything!

Hey Darwin!

Your post came at the perfect time. I've been really down on the diet/exercise lately, feeling like nothing will change. I am also not exercising nearly as much as I would like!! I do indeed have Fitday, but I stopped using it, because I knew I was always going to be under the amount of Calories i need. I find that seeing how many I eat in one day just makes me try to challenge myself to eat less, which is unhealthy. Also, I don't like the way Fitday counts all calories equally. I'm a strong believer that there's a difference between a timbit and a piece of cheese, regardless of how close they are to one another in caloric content. Anyway, Why have you switched to Spark People? Also, I must say, you being a canuck AND having the best username on this message board make you pretty darn cool in my books.

So, on to the next entry.
I don't have a scale, but I've lost 2 inches in my waist so far. Two inches in 2. weeks...Not too bad eh? I'm feeling quite a bit better about myself, and my boyfriend says he has noticed a change (but I think he's just saying it!)

Not much has gone down in the exercise department. I don't really have an excuse. I've been trying to walk more, to school and such (2.5ish Km) rather than taking the bus, but it is getting quite cold outside.

I've had some thoughts about changing around my diet...I've added a Boost drink in the morning (as opposed to the breakfast sandwich). The drink is a high-protein one, with less sugar than usual. It's just really quite easy for me to grab it on my way out the door. I'd like to have a lunch also. I'd like to keep eating as much fish as possible, so I'll probably start making myself some tuna or salmon sandwiches (on whole grain of course :)). It's been getting hard to live in my house, as I have 4 male roommates that eat whatever they want: Alphaghettios, pizza, pasta, thai noodles...Needless to say it's quite a bit of a bummer for me. Especially thai food, my weakness!

Sorry about so much rambling going on here, I'm just trying to figure out where I'm going with this diet. I know that just eating moderately healthy and switching to whole grain bread will NOT work for me. I have always eaten that way. I know i need to make radical changes, i'm just not so sure of where (other than exercise of course!)

Anyways, thanks for reading if anyone's actually made it this far.

Tiny-out.

Edit: As i post this in the computer lab, a stick thin girl beside me has eaten a huge macadamia cookie, a banana, a box of smarties, a granola bar, and had a kool-aid Jammer.

Fuck.

Congrats on the 2 inches in 2 weeks!! That is great results!

Oh, and for the "stick thin girl" in your class who obviously eats what ever she wants and isn't affected.... BITCH!!! ;) ;) :D (Hope you read sarcasm well)

Well done for managing to fight your cravings during TOTM, I could eat around a loaf of bread at a time at that point of the month, lol. Carbaholic. Congrats on the inches lost too!

Thankyou so much! Although I assume it's mostly water from reducing carb intake, still makes a difference in how I look. And thanks for the sympathy about the skinny bitch stuffing her maw! hahah...Being a girl, that's probably one of the hardest things about trying to lose weight. Watching others do nothing at all and look wonderful.

Thanks so much for the support Peepop, I too am a gigantic carbaholic. The things I would do to a fresh loaf of french bread if i were allowed!

Anyways, onto today's entry. I'm really proud of myself today. Lastnight I went to my Karate class finally, and it was amazing. I'm still really sore today. Our warm up was a 'timed stations' routine, much like what the gents in the movie 300 did to prepare for it.

station 1: Box jumps (over the box, not up and down)
Station 2: Leg lifts
Station 3: Knuckle push-ups
Station 4: Pummeling the heavy bag with jab-crosses as fast as possible
Station 5: Dragging the other heavy bag across the room, pushing it back, dragging across the room, and pushing it back again.

The timing of each 'round' was set by the person dragging/pushing the damn heavy bag. It ended up being about 2 minutes per station. We did this whole sequence twice. And that was just the warm up! After we did lots of jiu jitsu (take-downs, locks, chokes, everything fun). It was a great class. It makes me wonder why the hell I skip it so often.

I also printed off the Couch to 3Miles plan that I found online and I'm very eager to start it! One of the main downfalls for me when it comes to running is that I just try and go as fast as i can, for as long as I can. This of course causes immense pain for the next ~2weeks, which prevents more running. This plan will definitely help me take it slow.

The diet has been going okay. Small cheats here in there that I hope to phase out soon. It's amazing how quickly I can go from being a hardcore-non-cheater right before halloween, and now I'm right back to where I started! I really need to force myself to stick to cheat MEALS or DESSERTS, and never a cheat-day. Cheat days are just far too uncontrolled, and I'll result in this terrible slip-up again.

I've done measurements again: 2 inches lost on the belly too! Thank god. I have this obscure body type where my belly (the pudge under my bellybutton) knows no bounds! I can stick it out so far from my body it looks UNHUMAN. It is definitely a warning sign for diabetes though, so I am very intent on getting rid of it as soon as possible, and also reducing my sugar intake (which I'm sure is where this belly fat comes from).

Sorry to drone on again! Thankyou all for the comments though. It is much more encouraging to post here when I know someone has read it!

Tiny out, good luck to everyone :)

Sounds like a pretty tiring warmup! Nice job getting to karate. Yesterday was a wash for me. Ate leftover shit from the night before, didn't move all day. I've been in a bit of a funk for several reasons but that's no excuse. I need to be better than that.

I didn't do the Couch to 3 Mile plan, but I did a very similar one. Good for you for trying it out. My recommendation is get a good and proper shoe. It's worth the money spent! Find out whether you are neutral, supinated or pronated and get the appropriate shoe.

I'm with you as far as cheating goes... my good days are fantastic. I hit my mark and avoid temptations but, lately really, when I go off I tend to REALLY go off. I think that has more to do with the above mentioned funk, but it's something I need to address and fix. But you should know you're certainly not alone in that haha... gluttony loves company? :D

I had (still have a bit) the diabetes gut. It's mostly gone, I think. Not fully, but it's much better. I could hardly imagine it ever disappearing when I started, but keep at it. It's just like everything else... it will disappear at its own pace, but it will disappear.

Keep it up!

The Karate sounds intense... but fun. Nice work! Also, it looks like you are getting dialed into what works for you, and are looking into ways of being more active. Two very good things to do for yourself! Keep up this good work, and TinySara will get "GIANT" results!! ;) Have a great day. :)

This is cool, now JZ's gonna think I'm stalking him...

Hi Sara, just introducing my self and stopping by. I looked at your goal weight and was like, WTF? then I realized that you really are a sweet li'l thang... We'd make a pretty comical pair since Im the opposite and actually just freakishly huge.

Anyway... It looks like you've got a good plan going and martial arts are a phenomenal way to get in and stay in shape. Sounds like some decent work outs too. If Coach JZ approves its all good. Anyway, I'll stop on by again when I have the chance...:waving:

Thanks fish! I've got a pretty good shoe (Nike Air...also have Nike Healthwalkers :p) but I have some pretty epic fallen arches, so I have these super expensive insoles that I have to wear with them. Not sure about supination or pronation though...What's the difference? And hey, I've seen your after shots, there's no diabetes-ponch visible! haha, maybe i'll get there someday too.

Thanks JZ! I have a lot of fun doing it. I get immensely bored going to the gym, and I find that having my Sensai there yelling really helps to push me. Thanks for stoppin' by!

Hey Cabbie! Yeah, I realized most people would probably think I was crazy if i didn't put my height in there. According to the BMI, 100 is a good size for someone my height. So we'll see if i ever get there :p. And yes, I saw your before-and-afters, and you are indeed a HUGELY TALL person! Hahaha i would probably only come up to your waist! Thanks so much for stopping by :)

So on to today's entry.

Yesterday my diet went okay.

Breakfast: Boost shake
Lunch: 1/2 tuna sandwich on whole grain (delicious!)
Dinner: 1 cup spanish rice with 1.5 cups broccoli (wasn't in the mood for meat)
I kind of screwed up by having a cup of lemonade with dinner, but I'm really trying to get rid of the container. I bought it last weekend for mixing with Blueberry Vodka (BEST MIX EVER by the way you MUST try it!) and had tons of leftover lemonade.

I also screwed up by having a spoonful of my roommate's ice cream. He has Reese's Peanut Butter cups icecream, and he doesn't really like it, so it just sits there in the freezer smiling at me! It just so happens that Reese Cups are my favourite! Maybe i'll ask him to keep it in the deep freezer so I don't have to look at it so often (It's right beside my salmon, grr!)

I was going to go to Yoga lastnight, but I got a tummyache, probably from eating too much gum. I guess I should mention that I have IBS and an intolerance to the sweetener Splenda (or Sucralose). Basically, if I eat more than 6mg of this stuff, I get the same result as someone with severe lactose intolerance drinking a carton of homo milk. It's not pretty. Sometimes I buy sugarfree gum without checking it first, eat a whole bunch, and then realize after that is absolutely PUMPED FULL of Sucralose. Such was the case yesterday.

Today's meals so far (11:15am)

-Breakfast Sandwich (egg, english muffin, bit of bacon, cheese).
Lots of water.
-I will be having a 1/2 Tuna Sandwich on whole grain again today for lunch.

Tonight I am taking my boyfriend out for a fancy dinner to one of our favourite restaurants, called Paradiso. I just thought it'd be nice to do for him, since he drives up to visit me every weekend (45 minute drive) and is such a sweet help to me. The downside to this is that fancy restaurants = fancy calories. I really enjoy their Creme Brulee, so I will allow myself that dessert as a 'cheat dessert'. I am also allowing myself one martini (as opposed to two...or three...four...) and my meal must be either: a salad, a chicken/vegetable combo, or a fish/vegetable combo.
I find that as long as I set conditions to my cheats, I am able to get on track much more easily the next day.

Well I think that's about it for me today. I have a tentative sparring date set for Saturday (Basically, rolling around on the ground doing jiu jitsu for hours and sweating like beasts) and another jiu jitsu class on Sunday, so my exercise should be at par this weekend.

Thanks for reading you guys, you're really keeping me motivated to improve more and more every day!

Lots of love and GOOD LUCK
Sara

I soo know what you mean... but I bet that she is one of those "skinny-fat" girls. You could kick her ass in fitness anyday!!! Just remind yourself that just because they are skinny doesnt mean they are automatically healthy!! And you are on the road to both being healthy and slimer!!

So the next time something like that happens just smile to yourself and think THIN!!! :):smash:

Cheers,
Miss D

Hahahah I know! That keeps me REALLY motivated: seeing skinny-ass biatches come into my karate class, unable to do a lap around the room. It rules. Thanks so much for stopping in :)

Instead of BITCH!!!

Good job on the eating and the workout!

Haha thanks so much JZ! it helps to hear encouragement :) Hope you had a lovely weekend.

So I have some great news to report. I went home for the fancy dinner with the boyfriend. I kind of forgot that it was an Italian restaurant with nothing but pizza and pasta. So I had a cesar salad appetizer and a seafood linguine, and stopped eating when I felt full (halfway through). There's no shame in leftovers! Also, I had one martini, and thus allowed myself the cheat dessert. The creme brulees (3 flavors in large shotglasses, fancy!) were delicious, but I didn't eat them all. Just enough to get a satisfying taste of all 3!

Onto the good news: When I woke up thismorning, I remembered that my parents' house has a scale...And I am officially down to 135!! Wahoo! I thought I had been cheating too much but I guess this is really what my body needed: A less severe restriction in calories! I'm so pumped to go to Jiu Jitsu tomorrow!

Today's meals:
Breakfast (restaurant)
-2 eggs scrambled
-english muffin (one side PB, one side jam)
-Yogurt with fruit on top
-water to drink

Lunch (also restaurant, dad and sister wanted to go out)
-pan-seared calamari appetizer (no breading :))
-caesar salad
-chai latte
-water

I'm thinking i'll have a nice caesar for dinner tonight. I'm not trying to be restrictive, i just REALLY LOVE caesar salad!

I hope you all had great weekends!

Tiny out :jump:

Thankyou as always JZ :) Feel free to give me 'tough love' if you think I need it :D

BJJ didn't end up happening yesterday OR today. Lastnight I stayed up way too late watching Interview with a Vampire with my roommates, and I didn't get dressed/ready in time. That really annoys me though, because I really wanted to work out today. I think I'll go to the University and study, and then take a 'study break' by doing some treadmill stuff around 7:30pm. I'm just planning to do the first section of couch to 3mile plan.

So that'd be:
-5 minute brisk warm up walk
-run 90 seconds
-walk 60 seconds
continue interval for 20 minutes (for a total of 25 minutes on the mill). I know this doesn't sound like a lot, but my cardio is absolutely horrid and I really need to start slow.

Today's 'diet':
Breakfast:high protein boost shake
snack: spoon of peanutbutter
lunch: banana, english muffin toasted with PB and J

prospective dinner: Either a cold cut wrap from subway or a chicken cesar salad. Or a chicken twister. Depends on how late I leave for campus.

I know my meals look kind of screwy today. I am really hungry for some reason, and not even close to TOTM which is freaking me out a little bit. Probably just a result of staying up late I bet!

What would you guys reccomend to help build up my Cardio? I'm considering taking a spinning class...but is it worth the price? Also, how can i get more protein without eating a lot of meat? (not a vegetarian, just don't really enjoy cooking meat and making a mess). I know there are some high protein vegetables but they're also high in carbs...Should I invest in a powder?

Haha as you can see there's a lot about this stuff that I'm still so lost on!

Just a quick edit. I'm really annoyed because I got to campus expecting the Subway to be open and it was not. Who knew subway closed at 6:30?! Of course, there was absolutely nothing around except PIZZA. Fucking pizza, and donuts, and pie, and cakes, and muffins, and everything under the goddamn carbohydrate sun. I knew I would be working out tonight so I had to eat something. I got a slice of pepperoni pizza, and I forced my sister to share about 1/4 of it with me. I'm just really mad at myself because I wasn't even CRAVING pizza, it's not like I GAVE IN, there was just literally nothing else for sale! No sushi, no sandwiches, no packaged salads, no wraps...I should be saving my money anyways and making my dinner at HOME before I go to campus. This is just a lesson to myself. I'm off to the gym now to work off that damn slice. And my day was going well too!

Sorry for this rant y'all. Thanks for reading.

Wal*Mart has an inexpensive whey protein. Also beans are great. They make rice now that you just microwave. Rice, bean, salsa, lowfat cheese, ww tortilla. I went a month one time eating no meat, so I ate a lot of bean burritos. If you get refried beans just get ones withouth lard. Natty or low sugar pb, nuts, milk, lowfat cheese cubes. I learned a good recipe, lowfat ricotta, cocoa powder, splenda mixed makes a nice desert with some protein and nothing really bad. Lots of good choices.

And if you are interested in staying away from animal proteins there are also soy protiein suppliments available at Walamrt as well. :iagree: With Bert's thoughts on beans such. Lowfat or fat free cottage cheese, yogurts, and skim milk are good protein sources too.

Hey, Sara. :waving: I thought I'd stop in and see what you got going on in here. Looks like you got yourself an all male (and one DEE) fan club. :coolgleamA: Good job on the 135 by the way. :cheers2:

Yup, we're fans!

BTW, great loss this week. You must have really hit it hard this week to wee numbers like that. Awesoms.

Good morning and Happy Monday!

Congrats on the 135!! And you made great strides eating out. I think that's the hardest for most people is knowing when to stop when you are full.... but you did awesome!!

The intervals you did on the mill are great... how did you feel after each running interval?? Winded or could you have gone for longer??? You might pump up the speed for the last 10-15 seconds of each running interval and push yourself a bit harder... you'll be amazed at what it does over time!!!

Cheers!
