Time of the Month and Weight Loss

Hi Everyone!!!!

I'm new to this whole healthier lifestyle of exercising and dieting for weight loss...and well, i've never lasted for my time of the month to show up! :hurray:

I'm wondering..ladies...

1) do you usually gain weight during your TOM?

2) after your done, do you see a significant weight drop? I.E., the amount you would've lost while on your TOM.

3) do you continue your diet and exercise routine?

I realized I started my TOM yesterday, and I weighed in at 193.4. But this morning, I'm at 193.0....It's driving me nuts! :willy_nilly:

TOM is a great reason to not rely on the scale to be your only indicator of progress.

I would say most women gain some weigh either before or during their periods. I know I put on anywhere from 3-5 extra pounds that doesn't go away until after.

Do I see a significant weight drop? Sometimes, but not always. I don't count on it, anyway.

Do I continue with my diet and exercise - absolutely. Why would I not? It seems to me that not continuing would be just setting myself back .. I don't see any point in that.

Thanks Kara for your input.

I figured that I might even exercise harder and work on my diet (still in progress) while i'm on my TOM. I think I'll stay off the scale because of my TOM. As long as I exercise and eat within my calorie zones, I'll be good.

Any other ladies?!?! your experience of weigh-ins while on TOM??

I read somewhere you're burning extra calories just by having your period (that's right, I said period). So I took advantage of that and threw in an extra day of cardio at that time. Like clockwork, I'd lose 4-5 lbs every time those weeks.

I also found myself to be FAMISHED the week before my period. I would allow myself to indulge sometimes because a girl needs her chocolate if people around her want to live.

But that was just me.

Now I'm on the shot and don't get periods anymore... I miss the boost they gave me.

I gave up on weigh ins. My weight is not important. Its how I'm eating, how I feel, and the size of my clothes that keep me holding steady.

Exercise normally.. You don't ever want to overexzert yourself. Try to eat normally.. but remember if you're having hunger pains you should prolly eat. Your body will tell you how much you need to satisfy your hunger if you listen to it carefully enough. (if you're like me though you will shove food into its face until its in a food coma... sooo calorie counting is also excellent) Eat a little bit of what you want instead of denying yourself everything.. Also if you stop calling it a diet and start calling it a lifestyle change its a bit easier to keep with (at least i've found this to be true for me.)

I always gain alot of weight during my period.. esp with this new pill I'm on. the bloading is like WOOAAH. But it only last for 3 days really and then I'm back to fitting in my jeans instead of pants with elastic waistbands.

Also take into consideration if you get cramps that time of the month or not.. If you do a light workout might help ease them.. a hard one might make you puke. just friendly tips.

Back in late 2006 I worked on losing weight and I kept a chart with my daily weight and a moving average. I've attached a 3 month snippet of my chart with arrows at the days I started my period.

That's right - the first month I had an 8.6 pound gain in 1 day. But, the weight also came off again in about a week.

I definitely have always continued working just as hard through TOM.

I have been a daily weigher throughout my project (I know that all the experts say that people shouldnt do this but I feel that I need to know my weight if at all possible). I have noticed that I always get a noticeable gain (which may be of the order of 3 or 4 pounds) for about 12 days across that time. The gain starts about 2 days before TOM and continues until several days afterwards when I get back to my pre-TOM low.

It is hard to say whether I get a better weight loss or not during the other 16 days of the month from the work done during the dead-time. I cannot complain about my rate of weight loss. I halved my weight losing the first 147 pounds in 14 months which is pretty good going in my opinion. It took the next 13 months to get to goal - which could be classed as bad going - but I was happy with it because it meant that I had every opportunity to practice for maintenance at a healthy weight.

I actually weigh less during my period than I do any other time of the month. This seems to be rather unusual, haha.

Well, I'm a dude, so I don't get a monthly visitor of my own, but I know that my ex-girlfriend would always lose a few pounds right around her period. I mean, she must've burned like 5,000 calories a day just from all the screaming that she did at me...

"GO GET ME SOME CHOCOLATE ICE CREEEEEAM!!!"
"GOD, I'M SO FAT AND UGLY!!! YOU MUST HATE ME!!!"

Or, my personal favorite...

"I'm sorry for being so bitchy lately."
"It's ok. You can't help it, honey."
"What in the hell is that supposed to mean?"
"Umm, nothing. It's just that...uh..."
"What, you don't think I have CONTROL OVER MY OWN LIFE? IS THAT WHAT YOU'RE SAYING?!?!?!"

Obviously, those were the nights that I slept on the couch.

LOLOLOL ^ funny!!! hahahah i did that to my boyfriend on saturday....woo...date night didn't happen...lol

I think lose more weight in the first two weeks of my cycle than in the last two weeks, but I can't prove it because I haven't really been losing consistently lately. But from back when I did lose ;) the week of my period would end in me being a pound or two lighter than when it started, the week after I would maximise my weight loss and lose another couple of pounds, then the third week I would usually lose little and the 4rth week I would gain a pound, to get me to a weight loss of about 3 pounds per cycle.
But that is just me and my body, everybody is different! However it is known that women tend to retain water premenstrually and tend to lose it during their menstruation, so a gain and subsequent loss would be normal.

This last week I have been ridiculously hungry (I mean properly growling stomach and hunger pains even just a few hours after a good meal), and I guess I should be starting the menses soon. Hopefully I will start feeling less hungry then!!!

I dont see any differance in my wight, or how my clothes fit.
But keep up the diet and exercise. exercise actually can help with cramps and other unpleasant things 'aunt flow' loves to give us women.

:smilielol5::smilielol5::smilielol5: Who is this? Are you my ex boyfriend? LMAO

I've noticed my weight loss has just slowed down to a slow, slow crawl. My stomach sure is bloated though! I can't wait to see and feel my tummy once my TOM passes. I expected to lose 2lbs/day for like the first 2 weeks because i was in such a poor healthy state prior...but my expectations were too much?

I'm 192.0lbs, at 5'5", a week ago on 7/15 I was 199.0; I hope to be in the 180s by the time i'm done with my TOM!!!..or real soon!!!

2 lbs a day is completely unrealistic, certainly for someone who is under 200 lbs. And to expect to go from 199 to 180 (that's almost 20 lbs) in 8 days is also completely unrealistic.

Your ideal healthy weight loss rate should be about 1% of your bodyweight per week. For you that means about 2lbs PER WEEK - not per day.

So i hope to be 189.8lbs by Sunday. With this setback, I think it's unrealistic!

for 2lbs/day in the very very beginning 5-10 days of a life change, i think it's possible. I've done it 3-4 times in the past year, losing water weight quickly in the first week. I'm just hoping i have a few more pounds of water weight left, so I can readjust my goals, and continue on with my weight loss to lose FAT.

I hope to lose 2lbs/week, but hoped that schedule wouldn't set in until...a few days from now!

Ahhh Chef, you're too cute!

For me, it seems I bloat 3 out of the four weeks for the month. Just from TOM.

Sometimes I will go up, but I always come back down & lose 1-3 pounds past what I originally had been in about 4 days whether it be TOM or a crazy binge.

When I don't go up from TOM, I am just happily bloated, and than after (4 days) I sometimes drop 2-3 pounds. I am guessing my body does a lot of holding onto things. IDK LOL

I exercise 6 days a week, no matter how cranky, tired, or biatchy I may be with TOM. I feel like I am doing my body a service too. I have a great deal of cramp's that can hit & bring me to my knees in very short notice :svengo:, so exercising, works out these pains.

I'm crossing my fingers, RunningGirl!

thanks everyone for the input! I'm still on the TOM...will update...

I've found that I lose weight when i'm on my period. I feel like such crap that food is totally unappealing. As soon as I stop bleeding though, I end up pigging out ad gaining it right back.

As for working out while having my period, it depends. I usually bleed for 5 to 7 days, and I usually have atleast 4 days of heavy bleeding. On those days, the thought of working out is terrifying. I've had a few times where I tried and ended up bleeding through a little. And I cant concentrate on or enjoy my workout if i'm costantly running to the bathroom to make sure my pants are dry.

Also, i'm so physically exhausted on those days that getting dressed makes me want to crawl right back into bed.

are you on any sort of birth control by chance? Sounds like you're having some crazy bleeding! :( I used to be like that before I got on birth control.. now my periods are shorter and lighter--muuuuch more bearable!
