insincere works for me, so long as its compliments to me that is :)

Type: DO you want to do road biking? or mountain/trail biking ?
If you arnt sure then go for a Hybrid, it has wider tyres than a road bike, but without the huge nodules of a trail/mountain bike. Its also more comfy and can ride both road and off road.

Size: As for frame size, depends on your height, better to go to a decent bike shop and get the correct fitting bike, they should throw in a fitting for free when you buy it.

Fitting: Basicly when sitting on the bike, pedal at the lowest part, your leg should be dead straight when your HEEL is on the pedal. This way when you sit normally with the toes on the pedal your leg is slightly bent. If the seat is too low you end up with sore knees and to high you end up with a sore butt :)
Make sure you are sitting upwards more, not leaning to far forward (only extreme speed nutters sit in uncomfy positions for ages like that, or sprint racers etc.)

Umm, yeah, thats about it .. wear a helmet!

Hey, I know you and I have butted heads on this in the past, but here I go again :). What you did wasn't impossible, but it was very difficult. You, along with a few other people online and in RL have given me a road map. Going from obese to fit means fighting your body and fighting hard. I truely believe this is only possible with drastic and radical lifestyle change--For you its been the cycling, my friend Gina became a marathon runner. I have never known anybody who has successfully taken off more than 10% of their body weight and kept it off long term by simply reducing what they eat a bit and doing moderate to light exercise. It has to be much more radical.

Well Technically, this is not true..you simply need a calorie deficit to continue to lose weight and then a maintenance calorie level to stay there... However, It may be more likely that those of us with addictive personalities succeed more often when we trade a bad addiction for a good one.

I dont think i changed that drasticly, I still ea terrible foods at times, and a fair few takeaways. Its more than ive just tought myself what a 'normal' amount or portion is.

Indeed. Cycling isnt what lost the weight. it helped. but it wasnt what lost the weight. I took that up because i wanted a sport to keep me active so i neer got that fat again, It was a pre-emptive move so i dont re-gain.
Also i did a lot of cycling as a child and i knew i liked it :)

Thanks for the tips. I think a hybrid sounds good. Mostly I will ride on roads, but I would like the option of trails when I get more fit and used to riding.

How long have you been cycling now?

Hi, I'm new here and have been lurking in different journals and your transformation is incredible to say the least! It is truly inspirational...my sis in law is 29 y/o and is about where you were when you started...she feels that it's hopeless and that there's no way she can lose the weight...to see your transformation totally proves her wrong!! (in a good way)....congratulations....
clarivel

Hey learnerme, tell her to go for it! its worth everything you give up to get there.

And ive been cycling about a year and a half now, since i was really fat :D
More in the last year than before that.

Hi Wishes :)

Any advice for beginner cyclists?? I bought a bike last year with the idea that I'd love it so much it would be an easy way for me to shed the pounds. HOWEVER, lol, I quickly realized it now takes ALOT more effort to ride the bike (my legs get sore embarressingly quick) then it did when I was 9, lol SO, my bike has sat in the garage for a long time. However, with spring comming and my newfound desire to drop this weight once and for all....I'm contimplating taking the bike back out and going for a ride. I'd like to not get so discouraged again this time around....any advice??

ok heres a tip. cycle up the road and back, do like 10-20 mins the first couple times for a few weeks. This ought to get those butt muscles into shape and not hurt so much. Use lower gears and keep the feet spinning. its not about muscle power so much as just keeping your legs spinning at a constant rate (about 80 revolutions a minute)

So im struggling massivly eating/bingeing. i suspect its the quitting smoking thing. Im not hungry, just excessively craving . Though i can win MOST of the time with the craving it gets worse and worse throughout the day and i give in here and there, and soon enough ive eaten maintaince calories.

I bet it is the quitting smoking thing. I like the little story about what sparked you again to do this. It is nice that you have someone to hang with too. :)

As you may have guessed I feel for you re: the repetitive cravings. I guess you have a pretty good idea what to expect as you try to stop smoking this time and how long it will take before you're coping more easily again? Are you using patches?

i used patched for 3 days, then nothing. tomorrow makes it a week.
So yesterdays eating included 4 iced donuts :O how bad is that lol.

Time to get the bike on the windtrainer. the weather has turned to shit and its all wet again until next week. Im debating going on one of those replacement shake plans for a few days until i get the craving thing under control, the problem is whilst counting calories i can eat a small amount of foods such as donuts, the problem with that is stopping eating them. If im not allowed to eat any then its less of a problem (all mind games here).
Also a few days of lower calories after the crap ive been eating will help with the guilt factor lol.

So for the good news, its NZ Bike week! So cycling all week is all good!

Try to think of it this way: even if you gain a few pounds while you quit, the health benefits will outweigh those few extra pounds. Then when your body adjust to the no smoking, you can kick the few pounds. I know its easier said than done, though. Are you scared that the cravings and binging are going to become a habit, or is it that you are so close to your goal and can't wait to get there?

I wish I could love cycling. I guess I enjoy it, but my butt doesn't. I ride one day and I can't even sit on the seat for the next four or five days. I had a friend who is an insane cyclist tell be that I need to develop a butt callous. LOL! That didn't sound too pretty (and my butt ain't that pretty to begin with!).

i found its more butt muscles than callouses! i certainly dont have callouses, and id be worried if i did!
I guess guys might because they have more hanging out down there.

Anyway diet was kept firmly in check yesterday, and today im doing ok as well so far. I think im over the worst now

woot! bringing sexy back! :D

Well i found out the body composition analyer thingee is back up the road. time to spend another $15 to see how much body fat and muscle weight i have nowdays :O

Last time it said i was 52.9kg lean body mass and ideal weight was 68kg, lets see what the magic 8 ball machine thingee says this time.

Hi Wishes
I want to encourage you on your journey as a nonsmoker! You can surely do this! In the meantime, as you are battling the craving, I see that you did The Patch thing for a few days. I saw an ad that looked interesting on telly today for these 2 little metal circles, gold plated, magnets. They go on your upper ear (one in front, the other behind to hold in place), supposed to work like acupressure. It seems like they could work in theory; just wanted to pass along to you.

You have done amazing things! You can do this, too.

Cheering for you from :eh:

ABBA

sorry im not a major fan of magnets and other crap without scientific proof.

So the other dude who quit gave up quitting over the weekend heh. sucks to be him! i gave him hell :)

Im doing ok today. im fine during the day its mostly the evening.

Hi wishes! I just had to pop in and check out your journal. Amazing! Thanks for being so welcoming.

How did your smoking affect your exercise? I, too, am a smoker, and am dreading the idea of becoming winded after just a short time!
