Thomas' Diary

Hi everyone! My name is Thomas and this is my diary. I'm currently at my highest weight which is 472 pounds so I have a LARGE amount to lose. I'm hopeful this diary will help me remain committed to the process. I know there will be bad days mixed in with the good days. My main problem in the past is letting those bad days turn into weeks and then months. My goal weight for now is 250 but I'm sure as I get closer to that goal I will reevaluate.

In early 2012 I lost 62 pounds from my then high of 461 but due to many issues I gained it all back plus a few more. It is depressing and maddening that I let myself go crazy again and gain all the weight back.

But that is in the past so I can't change it....but I can change the future and that is what I intend to do. No...that is what I WILL do!

I've tried all the diets in the past and most work for a week or two but then I go off plan and that pretty much ends that round of dieting. My plan this time it to just eat normal (meaning normal portion sizes) and better (cutting processed foods) since I know this needs to be a lifestyle change, not just a diet that results in temporary weight loss.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Diary day 1 complete. :)

Hi Thomas, welcome to the forum. We're all here to support and vent to each other so whenever you're having a bad day just vent away. We all lean on each other to help get through those bad days. You're in good hands here. :)

Your plan sounds like a good one. Learning how to plan meals and eat proper portions goes a very long way and it's very important to maintain your goal weight once you get there. That's basically what I'm trying to learn as I try to get to my goal. Some days I amaze myself at how well I've done and other days I give in to temptation and eat something I shouldn't. We are human afterall so we can't expect perfection. :)

Will you be losing solely by counting calories / cutting back on eating or are you also going to add an exercise regiment as well?

I'm looking forward to following your progress. As I said before we're here for each other. If you feel like you want to give up, just take the time to post your feelings and we'll get you back on track. :)

Hey welcome!! It's great that you have joined - this forum is great source of knowledge and support!

No matter how many pounds we all have to lose - we always concentrate on the next 10 lbs- take it slow - step by step and you'll get to your goal!

I encourage you to look at some people's diaries - very inspirational!!
Don Keykong joined with similar starting weight as yours - maybe check out his diary - he is doing amazingly well!!

Good luck on your journey! I look forward to seeing your updates!

Thanks MandyH! I do plan on adding exercise also. I have a towel rack...I mean exercise bike...that I plan on starting to use every day. I did it last year when I was losing but stopped at about the same time I went crazy eating again.

Hi Thomas! Good for you for starting this process. No matter what plan(s) you choose to follow, find one that you are comfortable doing forever... we need to remember that this is a LIFE change, not a FIX or DETOUR.

Check out my diary to see what's worked for me. It works for me, but not everyone wants to do it.

The best advice I can give you is set easier to achieve short-term goals. Staying with this lifestyle change eventually comes down to your attitude and desire to change, so having achievable goals to keep your attitude positive is critical.

This is a good website. There are a lot of admirable people here... many of whom have had great LONG term success. Check around and say hello... they're very helpful.

That's really great that you have a bike all ready to be used! When I first attempted to lose weight we didn't have any equipment in our house. We now have a treadmill and I discovered taebo DVD's so I have no more excuses. My first attempt to lose weight failed miserably. It was early last year. I began walking daily and I gave up soda, but once summer rolled around it got too hot to walk so I stopped. I also started drinking soda again so there went all my hard work! I'm determined to stick with it this time around though.

Thanks Don! I read your diary thread yesterday and you are making amazing progress.

I think you're right about setting short term goals. My problem in the past was thinking big (pun intended :) and then getting overwhelmed with just how much weight I need to lose and getting discouraged. I'm setting my first goal as simply getting through this week without any major cheats. I'm on day two (didn't start on Friday like I had planned...not sure why I thought that would be a good idea anyway :) and so far, so good.

Good luck! I wish I could give up soda but I can't...at least not yet. I have cut back quite a bit though to about 2 cans a day. I just think cutting out the diet coke as well as changing eating habits would be too much of a shock to my system at the moment.

Diary Day 2:

I posted diary day 1 on Friday but didn't really get started until yesterday so I'm calling this day 2. Attempting to start a new eating lifestyle on a Friday before Easter probably wasn't the best idea I've ever had :)

Yesterday was day 1 and wasn't horrible but I didn't get off to a good start by skipping breakfast. I got tied up at work and just didn't have time. Missing breakfast kinda threw off my plan for the day but I still did ok for day 1.

And I'm down 1.2 pounds from yesterday morning. Sure, it's probably all water weight but I'll take it anyway :).

My first mini goal is simply to get through 1 week without going off plan. This first week I'm not concerned with how much weight I lose (although I will be weighing everyday (can't help it)). I know that if I stick to the plan of no fast food, minimal processed foods, drinking lots and lots of water, and eating 'normal' size portions, the weight will come off.

My second mini-goal is losing 22 pounds to get me to 450. I'd like to do that by the end of April if possible. I know that at my size losing that much in a month is certainly possible and not that atypical for the first month.

Happy Tuesday!

Hey Thomas, thanks for stopping by my diary.
Reading your day 2, I think you have a good plan. Definitely, eat something early for "breakfast". Take fruit, a hard boiled egg, anything for a quicky if you don't have time to eat a proper breakfast. Cutting the processed foods and fast foods will cut the calories, too.

Are you drinking soft drinks? If so, think about getting rid of them. Also, watch the sodium intake... it doesn't necessarily affect long term losses, but it DOES affect day-to-day weigh ins (I was up Monday by 4 lbs, then down today 3.4 pounds because of a salty ham dinner on Easter!) and in my opinion the salt drives appetite toward more unhealthy snacking.

The only other "tip" I have is to look at what you're eating (what ratio of proteins, carbs, grains, etc) and when you're eating if you're like me (I ate waaay too late in the day and had to reverse that).

You absolutely can lose that first 22 and lots more than that, too. It's a long process, but very doable. Let me know if I can help.

Hey, a loss is a loss. Celebrate the 1.2 and think about it on weeks that you maybe haven't lost as much.
