The, if not shrinking, staying the same size Midwife...

Good news about the 3kg lighter at the doctors even with heavier clothes!

Fantastic news about the new PMA! Keep it up girly!

ooohyyeeeaaaahhh 95kg :p
Dressed too :)

Booked in for 6th of December!! So come two week today I won't be around for a week or so.
A bit worried..
Bigger risks than last time.. and I almost died last time!! Ever told you guys about that?
I think I might have in one of my huge rants.. But it might have been one I deleted.
Anyway.
Since it's a new thread I'll start from the beginning...

July 09 I was diagnosed with typical carcinoic of the lung.
August 09 I had a bilobectomy by thoracotomy to remove two of my three lobes and the tumour.
Nov 09 Given "all clear" technically. All surrounding tissue from surgery was clear and I was healing well.
Feb 10 Same as before
August 10 CT Scan revealed an enlarged lymph node.
Sept 10 PET Scan revealed potentially cancerous lump
Sept 10 Endoscopy and biopsy revealed carcinoid cells
Oct 10 MIBG scan to work out next step
Nov 10 MIBG scan found to be unsuccessful and appointment booked with surgeon
Nov 10 Appointment with surgeon to discuss radical treatment.

So at the appointment we discussed my options. Radiotherapy is a no, so I am going to have another thoracotomy! Will remove the affected lymph node and others that he can find while he's in there.
He's going through the same scar too

Gah.
I'm so nervous
It's the anaesthetic that bothers me. I don't know if I'm more scared of waking up during or not waking up at all!!

Anyway OT

Food's been horrendous :p had people over last night and ate cheesey chips and 2 slices of pizza. Then the other two today!! Had a curry the night before, which I finished off the day after. Actually. The curry wasn't bad really, especially not spread over two days!
But yeah, about a whole tube of pringles in two days and chocolate buns!

BUTBUTBUT
I'm not particularly bothering about eating massively well until after my op. Yeah I'm gunn akeep an eye on it so I don't gain like a stone before hand, but I also don't wanna stress about calories and veggies leading up to it.
Although I probably am going to make spicy chicken and rice again tomorrow. With onions and peppers :)

big HUGE hugs :( It sounds really scary and I hope it all goes ok.

Can you train your boyfriend to be able to post on here to let us know how you are getting on? Or just to drop me or someone an email so we know that the op went ok? If I were you I'd have problems concentrating on any weight loss / calorie counting at all and would go straight into "I can only cope with one thing at a time" mode.

You've been through a lot Red. I'm sure you'll come out the other side of this just fine but you've got all my good vibes coming your way anyway!

I agree with Jay and yourself - it's not a time to stress the little things! Look after yourself and do whatever you can to keep life as easy and stress-free as possible in the run up to your op. And make sure that man of your's takes extra special care of you too!

OK I'm done lecturing, I know you can look after yourself!

xx

Sent you a PM woman. You have my mob number now--No excuses not to keep us updated! Apart from not texting strange women from the internet. That excuse I'll accept. Just.

xx

Hey Redpiggy, Just wanted to say I'll be thinking of you, and hope all goes well. I'm sure it will, and I think your new PMA is awesome :)

Like the others said please let somebody let us know how you are as we will all be worrying about you. You have such a wonderful positive attitude that will help you beat this thing. Big hugs and looking forward to you coming back here safe and healthy xxx

Hey everyone.
I'm so bad at updating here now :p

Well I go out into placement tomorrow!! ARGH OMGZ SOOO NERVOUS lol
Taking packed lunches so should be healthier than usualy.. Maybe :p

I've got Sunflowers number saved so I'll get her to tell you all when I text her.. Although I have a sparkly new phone that.. OMG... Actually has internet access!! So I might be able to be on here myself anyway :)

How's placement going?!?! I want to know!! How many babies have you seen born!?!

You need to tell me if it is snowing badly up your way...I might not be able to drive there *GASP*

Only been able to do one day placement not two as I woke up ill this morning :(
Felt sick last night but assumed it was nerves, then woke up this morning and went to the loo... And again... And again.... But thought it might have just been my tea last night making me funny. So I set off anyway, got to the bus stop, and had to come straight back to go to the loo!!

So I rang in sick and now have to wait 48 hours before going in again so I'm not in until monday unless I can squeeze something in on Saturday.

Doubt I'll see any babies born this placement especially. I might get to go on call and follow them into hospital but probably not. There is also a less then 1% homebirth rate in this area so unless I'm super lucky I won't see one.

And we don't get delivery suite until 2nd year. Although hopefully when I'm on antenatal in January I might get to follow a lady or two onto ds to witness :)

Weather wise... In Leeds there is pretty much no snow however I don't know about everywhere else. I'm assuming you'll be at the office in S?

Hope you are feeling better soon! Better not to go and spread germs if you aren't well.

Yeah, S...just my luck it will dump loads of snow and all be off!

Hope you feel a bit better today.
One of my sister in laws is from the Philipines. She says that she is a a fully qualified midwife. When I asked her how many babies she had seen born she admitted that the only person she had seen give birth was her mum. Scary stuff!!!!!!!!!!

Ah you see over here you cannot qualify until you have assisted with 40 complete births. This includes helping with the delivery of baby/ies and placenta. Plus 100 antenatal and postnatal exams and been signed as competent in a massive list of skills.

Luckily for us UK student midwives, we have thousands of births at each hospital every year so we get in our numbers quite easily usually.

I'd imagine it will be quite an emotional experience when you help deliver your first baby and even more so when you're in charge. I remember when I was in labour with my first child a young trainee midwife noticed that my son's heart beat was slowing everytime I had a contraction so I was rushed off for a cesarian section. The next day the young woman came and proudly told me that it was her that had noticed and may have saved my babies' life. She just beamed and then came and visited 'her' baby every moment she got. It was so sweet to see how proud and happy she was with her new job. I wouldn't mind betting that she also still remembers it over 34 years later :)

I think you'll never forget any... But just in case I'm writing down everything I do on placement lol.
Babies heart rates can slow with contractions and at that point it's get the baby out usually. To notice and be taken seriously with your professional judgement as a trainee would be such a boost to your confidence and I imagine that would have been one of the first moments she really felt like a midwife.
I'm so excited to get out there some more, but I wish I wasn't cramming it all into one week :
Foods just not even being bothered with to be honest. As long as I don't go above 15 stone I'm not bothering. That gives me 3/4lbs to play with over these next few weeks.

Had pizza and a chocolate orange today.. And a packet of crisps.. And thats it =/
I usually am getting in 3 meals, or at least two...
But I got stuck in town today because there was an hour long wait for taxis because of the snow.. there wasn't even much!!!

I can't even imaging seeing a baby born in real life, you must have a strong stomach Redpiggy!
Ecky, that's such a nice story!
When I had my second cesarian, my uterus 'left the building' apparently and I lost a heap of blood and one of the nurses fainted! Sorry for the gross visual there lol.

I've seen some pretty gross things in real life already, and plenty of birth and c-section videos so hopefully I should be fine...
But..
Hmm it's something I do worry about. Some days videos don't bother me, others they do.

But I had a chest drain after my op and will have another this time round so I'm used to really gross things :p

I can't wait to witness my first birth. I bet I cry lol.
My perfect scenario would be a homebirth, baby straight onto breast and physiological third stage but that will just not happen lol.
I'm expecting to follow a lady from antenatal to delivery in my antenatal placement in jan, and it to be managed because apparently thats normal these days...
Grrr. We were designed to have babies, stop messing with it!!!

SOrry if I use words that don't mean much to you. Feel free to ask for any explanations.
x

Hey piggylovers.

Just got a text from the lady herself asking me to let all you lovely people know that she is out of surgery and back on the ward now. She's sleepy and on "all sorts of drugs" (lucky cow ;)) but she's fine!

Sure she will update herself as soon as she can but if I hear anything else I will pass it on :)

I'm glad that the surgery is over and hope that you will be fully recovered very quickly. Hugs.
