The gym?

Hiya!

I just joined the gym, and I was wondering how often I should go a week and for how long? I could probably make it around 5 times a week for an hour? Is that enough to lose 2lbs a week? I'm really unsure. I've been doing the elliptical and the treadmill.

Thanks

It's more important to analyse your diet. You'll have to be critical with yourself here.

But yes, cardio 5x1hr is a terrific start. It's very important to build up your cardio-vascular endurance, essential really.

Use fitday.com to count calories though. Weight is all about calories.

Are you just starting or have you been exercising for a while?

If you're just starting I'd suggest starting with a lot less training per week. The idea I always think is to make a lifestyle change. You can always push out that kind of training from the beginning, but I noticed in myself and in others that kind of intense training from the start ends in either injury or you just stop training, mainly because your body is exhausted.

I would start gently 3 days a week with cardio based exercise running, swimming or rowing, alocate one technique for each day and only 30 mins at a time.

Once you feel your body is ready to push on for more and you'll know when you'r done after the week and you've got more energy, then you start pushing on your training. I would try pushing up the intensity of your training rather than increase the amount of training days. also include weight training, nothing burns fat like muscle. to start keep reps high and weight low. keep good form to avoid injury.

Good luck dude

It would be helpful if you provided some more details about yourself - gender, age, weight, height, level of current activity. As mentioned above, your food plan is going to determine so much more of your weight loss results than exercise.

The reason for this is that 70% of all calories you eat are utilized for basic body functions - heart beating, blood pumping, new cell growth, blinking your eyes, etc. Only 20% of average energy used in the body is from exercise. That is a much smaller percentage than I would like, but it is the truth.

I would like to hear more about you before I say more.

Whatever you do, make sure its sustainable. Its very easy to become over enthusiastic about exercise when you first start and then fall out of love with it a few months on and stop going as you feel your efforts are not as good as they once were. Make sure you set yourself goals you want to keep and feel motivated to keep.

Also make sure your varying your exercise routine every 6-8 weeks so your body doesn't have a chance to get used to it.
