The "Fat Smash" Diet

Hello all,

I did a search for posts on this topic...but nothing came up. Was just curious if anyone has tried the Fat Smash Diet? It's the diet plan used on Celebrity Fit Club by Dr. Ian Smith.

It seems reasonable....no gimmicks, no calorie counting - just learning to eat healthier by following a phased plan. However, the first phase (cleansing your body by eating only fruits and vegetables for 10 days) seems challenging, to say the least.

Any feedback on this particular diet?

Thank you.

Thats crazy!
Why would you pay good money for information you can get right here on the forum?

All you have to do to loose weight is exercise regularly, and eat healthy. There is no magic book or diet that will help you.

Workout how many calories you need to eat per day and split them over 50% carbs, 40% protien and 30% fat. There is nothing to learn from a book that you can't learn from reading the forum and asking a few questions.

I saw his commercial while watching the show last night but have no idea what the diet consists of.

Thanks for your comments. I really don't see it as a fad or a gimmick...just a blue-print plan in reworking your body's relationship with food - based on a healthy diet. No pills or magic or anthing. You start off in the first phase eating all fruits and vegetables to cleanse your body of the impurities (and addiction) from processed food and junk food in general. So, granted, this phase does sound a bit extreme....but it's only for 10 days. (I've NEVER been one for extreme measures, but I kinda like the ideology behind it.) And then in the second phase, third, and subsequent phases - you add in the rest of the food in the food pyramid in moderation and steps. I think the point of it is, to lay the foundation that fruits and vegetables should be your main component... followed by protein and everything else. And in the end, it's all about moderation.

Dunno if I'll try this one or not - but it looked interesting.

I disagree with you. Of course, there's no "magic" book or pill that will do the work for you. But many need a guide or blue print to help them along day by day, in making life-changes.

You are right, all you have to do to lose weight is to exercise regularly and eat healthy. It just aint that easy for everyone. (obviously, since we have so many overweight people in this country.) Paying $12 for a book written by a doctor whose helped a plethora of people lose weight, I don't see as wasting "good money". But that's me. People are different, and different diet methods work better for some than others. As long as they're based on healthy eating, learning moderation, and exercise...I don't think you can go wrong.

30% + 40% + 50% = 120% ??

Personally, I think "calorie counting" really works for me. It's not that i stick a strict calorie number that i can NEVER go over... but i just like knowing where i stand. I travel a lot, so its not easy (almost impossible) to eat a perfect diet... but tracking it just lets me know where i stand.

I don't see a need for a book when you already have a gist for what the diet is... if you want to try it, save yourself $12 and eat fruits & veggies for 10 days, then work the correct amounts of proteins, fats, and carbs into your diet. Just my two cents...

So basically you're not eating any protein for 10 days? that is not healthy or smart.

Yes, I felt the same way at first. I'm not completely sure if the first phase is without protein. I haven't read enough about it. I just like the idea of an initial "fast", to cleanse your body. Maybe 10 days is way too long though.

Instead of spending the money to buy the book, maybe go to the library and check it out.

A friend of mine told me that you don't need the book because if you eat right and exercise, you'll lose the weight, but I agree a blue-print or a guide would be nice for some people.

It's on you. If you want to try it, more power to ya. Let us know if you do try it and what the results are.

30% + 40% + 50% = 120% ??

Oops! well spotted, I must have been drunk! Try 40% 35% 25% (carbs, protien, fat)

I disagree with you.

Well then spend the money and do it.

Just make sure you have a blood test before and after so you can see how f***** up you are after eatting only fruit for 10days.

And make sure you buy some extra toilet paper cos your gonna be going every 30mins!

Correction

Sorry all for the misinformation. You DO eat protein during the detox, Phase I period...just not meat. You also eat 'some' carbs- primarily just oatmeal. (Guess that definitely would've been unhealthy just to eat fruits and veggies for that long.)

Below are some Q and A's from another site regarding just this first 10 days of the diet. If I decide to try it -I'd probably just check it out at the library (thx for the suggestion She47).

What kind of oatmeal is allowed in phase 1?
You're supposed to have plain oatmeal. You can sweeten it with splenda if you need to.

Where is the protein coming from to maintain your muscles?
In phase 1, your protein comes from egg whites, chickpeas, beans, tofu, and lentils.

Is it ok to use canned vegetables or fruit?
Yes but fresh fruit is better. Frozen vegetables are generally better than canned.

Is it ok to have decaf coffee?
No. Coffee drinks of any kind are not allowed.

Are potatoes allowed?
No. Sweet potatoes are ok though.

Can I have popcorn?
3 cups of air popped popcorn is ok. No butter of course.

What type of lowfat yogurt is permitted. Just plain or can you eat the brands that already contain fruit

The best is plain, low-fat yogurt. You can slice in fresh fruit or add berries. If you really MUST have the yogurt that already contains the fruit, please do so sparingly.

The book says to eat 2 cups of brown rice, 1 cup of oatmeal, 4 egg whites etc. Am I supposed to eat these foods in that quantity each day or is it merely an option? Also, can I eat instant oatmeal, fat-free yogurt that has fruit in it, and red potatoes?? Thanks for your help. I want to follow the plan but am confused.

Those are the limits, you do not eat all of it. Only sweet potatoes are allowed. Red potatoes are still white potatoes and do not have the fiber content or nutritional value of sweet potatoes. White is the indicator of the "meat" or inside the skin. The lighter the color the less nutritious.

Is Whey Protein allowed? I like to use whey protein (EAS-Chocolate Flavored) as a base for my strawberry smoothie for breakfast.

Protein powders and supplements have been largely untested, especially with there being so many brands and varieties. If you decide to add protein powders to you shakes, you need to make sure it is healthy protein and the product's manufacturer and their claims are reputable.

Is Splenda allowed in Phase 1?

Yes but sparingly. No more than 2 tablespoons a day.

In the book it says that we can have legumes (i.e. beans) as a good source of protein. I was wondering how much we can have per day. I prefer canned.

As much as you want, they are beans.

How about edamame (soy beans)? I'm pretty sure they are considered a legume and I absolutely love dry-roasted edamame. Thanks.

Yes, you are allowed soy beans.

Can I have prepackaged oatmeal or just plain oatmeal?

Just plain oatmeal. Not presweetened.

Are veggie burgers allowed in Phase I?

Veggie burger which are made of 100% veggie or tofu are allowed. Some veggie burgers have bread and/or cheese contents. You can't have those. Check out the recipe in Files for Phase I to make your own veggie burgers.

you shouldn't be having splenda. its just pure aspatame. It really should be banned already. in dry form it has links to cancer.
Whats wrong with a small amount of sugar? its only pure natural carbohydrate that will be burn off with a small amount of exercise.

i don't think that Splenda is aspartme...

I'm honestly not exactly sure what it is... sort of like a "sugar sans calories" maybe? I like it though... :D

Splenda is sucralose...a sucrose sugar molecule with a chlorine ion bonded to it, which your body cannot break off, and therefore cannot process the sucrose as 'sugar'. therefore it tastes sweet, but has no effect on insulin, no net carbs, and just passes through you.

derwydden - Is that your line of work? Interesting.

If you have any good stories or info I'd enjoy reading about it. start a thread when you have time.
