The Diary Of An Obese Man

The Beginning

January 2009.

Here I am, a male going on forty this year that is very overweight. I would like to say that I carry the weight well as I am fairly broad, but the truth be known I am getting fatter by the day. Over the past year I have put on at least a stone and currently am simply too fat at 17½ stone.

The big problem for me is I drive to work, I am pretty damn lazy and my job involves me sitting down on my chair being a keyboard warrior for a large organization.

I am also around five foot eight or nine, so you can get the picture that I am getting curvier. This was only heightened by the fact that some of my XL t-shirts are feeling a little tight that I noticed at the beginning of the year.

The last thing I need is to join the ranks of the XXL league as when you hit the top there, there is nowhere to go!

The best thing I can do is diet and to do this, I am going to try to keep a diary of the challenges that I face in losing some weight. If I can knock 5½ stone off and get to 12 stone then that will be a fantastic achievement for me and back to the level that I was when I used to do weight training about 16 years ago!

Why am I documenting this?

This is to give me something to reflect back on when the going gets tough and also be a motivator to help me regain fitness and stamina as well as fix a possible blood pressure issue that my weight is probably causing.

Last year I had a long term goal to run the London marathon, that is still a goal. However after a few weeks of trying to train my ankles and shins were shot to hell. The fact is, the body is not designed to be carrying the weight of such a large person like myself and the constant impact of running on the pavements in the early morning took it’s strain and it took months for my ankles to recover.

Here is the diary of a “new” me as I attempt to lose 1/3 of my curvier body weight. I have no idea about diets, but I am going to do it my way and win.

Today I have no idea on my exact weight and I am not going to bother with this for at least a couple of days. The purpose for this is to get my body into a routine of not being allowed to eat at will. The best day to do this is a weekend day as it’s a day that I don’t work and would be prone to pecking.

I started the day with a Slim-Fast milk shake from a tub of powdered milk, these come in a powder form and you have to make them yourself. Initial taste was it was quite filling and felt like you were having a fair amount, but that was due to the froth giving it the extra body. This was nice.

Lunch time was again another glass of Slim-Fast milk shake, still feeling ok.

During the afternoon I was beginning to suffer as usually I would have eaten so much rubbish by now, so I tucked into a bowl of Weetabix.

Come evening meal, I had some meat, broccoli and a fair amount of boiled potatoes.

During the late hours of the evening, however bad it is for you to eat, I had a cheese and mustard sandwich on healthy bread along with no butter!

I am an owner of an iPhone and although sceptical about such things as hypnosis, I saw a Custom Hypnosis application that claims to help you do lots of things including “eat healthy”. I went to bed listening to this and it gave a technique that sounds hocus pocus of pressing your thumb and forefinger together when you want to eat unhealthy food and tell yourself not to – what a load of rubbish!!!

Sunday 4th January 2009

Day two, but who’s counting.

I woke up fairly late in the morning so just made do with the usual milk shake at lunch time and basically missed breakfast.

Throughout the afternoon, my partner kept asking me if I was hungry of which I was saying no. I told her that if she wants to give up her diet then that’s fine, but I am continuing with mine and don’t use me as an excuse to eat! Not very supportive, but I didn’t want to be nagged.

During the afternoon. I also found myself using the method shown on the Custom Hypnosis and although probably psychological, I swear that I felt tingling on my lower arms when I performed the technique and told myself I was not hungry. I did not eat until tea which consisted of again meat, broccoli and a fair amount of boiled potatoes.

Late that evening I had another sandwich with cheese and mustard.

This may sound repetitive here, but if I like a food I generally stick to it. I believe that cheese isn’t the healthiest thing to eat and looking forwards I hope to replace that with “rabbit food” and green stuff!

That being said, to get past the weekend as I did was a huge milestone and fantastic achievement. I had not drunk any coke (as in 1.5 litre bottles), eaten multiple bags of crisps and thrown any other good looking crap down my throat that I usually do.

Again I went to bed listening to the Custom Hypnosis application on my iPhone.

Monday 5th January 2009

Just like the previous two days, I had the powdered Slim-Fast milk shake at breakfast and diner as well as a meal in the evening, followed by a sandwich in the evening.

I had decided that I will weigh myself on my first day back at work from the Christmas break and go from there.

Tuesday 6th January 2009

The routine of having a shake for breakfast and lunch continues, but this is the last of the easy days as I am back at work tomorrow.

Tea was a fantastic chicken stir fry with flat breads.

However today, something different happened – I did have my usual cheese and mustard sandwich but I found myself not wanting it as much as I had done the days before.

This poses the question of which I know the answer, have I been eating for eating sake?

Now we have a whole new ball game, I am back at work today. On my iPhone I installed an application called WeightBot which I will use along with Custom Hypnosis.

I am generally a late sleeper so I weighed myself just after midnight before I went to bed and popped the details into WeightBot. Now I don’t expect sudden results but to get a fair reading I believe I should weigh myself the same time every day.

For breakfast was the usual milk shake and I took one to work as well in a cook bag. This was one of the ones that had already been made and you buy in plastic bottles. I just hope it can survive outside of the fridge in the bag!

This was a huge challenge at lunch time while everyone else was eating, so I went to the shops to post a card that I needed to. After lunch of which I had only my bottle shake which was very disappointing after the powered one, I then had to avoid the cakes that were doing the rounds that had been brought to celebrate people’s birthdays. They were tempting but willpower won through!

The evening meal was a stir fry again to use the remainder of the chicken up followed by nothing!

The late evening had come and for once, I was not hungry at all.

Goal’s now are the following:
• Reduce the size of the meal I have in the evenings.
• Try not to eat a sandwich each night before bedtime.
• Start to use the exercise bike.

I must not starve myself but for some reason I am sitting here feeling bloated as if I could have got away with eating less.

After midnight, I weight myself and hit the same results as I had the night before – nothing had changed. This was good – better to stay the same then put weight on.

By my restrictive diet as I sit here typing this, I believe that I am less hungry then I have been and slowly but surely not wanting to peck at food as well.

If the past five days have done anything then that is a result in itself. The fact that I’ve literally gone cold turkey over crisps and coke overnight again is an achievement in itself. Just to put this into perspective for people, I often would go to Makro’s and buy crisps in bulk as in boxes of them. I was a junk food addict.

Now I need to set goals of when I am going to weigh myself, so the next target date is going to be Monday 12th January.

Breakfast today again consisted of the shake and again another for lunch at work. I figured that if you shaked the pre-bottled version really hard then all the lumps disappear…

…this proved true as long as you drunk it quick and didn’t let the contents touch the sides of your mouth!

Tea was excellent, using the rubbish food in the fridge consisted of bacon, egg, chips and sausages with some bread and better. Obviously no sandwich tonight, although as I type this I am not hungry at all.

Friday 9th January 2009

Finally I have nearly completed my first week of my strict diet. I have decided that each week I complete I will reward myself a treat in terms of food that I like on top of the diet.

Breakfast was again the milkshake with one also taken to work for lunch.

Today I passed on a pub trip to avoid the beer and large lunch, as I wanted to eat a meal for tea rather then just have a milkshake – I already had plans for my treat later!

Evening meal was a simple baked potato with beans and a little cheese before I went to the football match that I was planning on going to. When the temperature hit -7 it was time at half time for the chicken balti pie!

Overall it’s been a good week, I’ve had the odd craving for food that I used to enjoy but find myself actually then not wanting it as it’ll damage the progress that I’ve made so far.

Now I have my treat at next Friday to enjoy when I hope to celebrate a second week of the successful diet.

Saturday 10th January

Weight: 17ST 4LBS
BMI: 36.7

The usual breakfast and lunch was followed by two burger’s without the bread, lettuce or anything else, some broccoli and boiled potatoes.

Was beginning to struggle (for once) in the evening so had a cheese and mustard sandwich.

Sunday 11th January

A nice change today, I had the usual milk shake breakfast followed by a Nandos for lunch which was double breast chicken in a burger, garlic bread and chips.

Usually I’d have three or four trips to the free soft drinks, today I had none. If I am going to enjoy the meal then I am certainly going to give up all the sugar!

For the evening meal I had another shake.

Right at the end of the day I was pretty damn hungry so had a cheese sandwich.

Monday 12th January

Shake for breakfast, shake for dinner and some southern chicken, peas and chips for tea.

Also off out tonight to meet a friend, so hopefully not too much down the pub!

The pub consisted of a pint of fosters and an orange juice and lemonade.

When I got home, I had a cheese and mustard sandwich!

Tuesday 13th January

The usual shake for breakfast and dinner was followed by a fantastic meal of pork chops in a parcel along with peas, brocolli and boiled potatoes.

Later in the evening I had some weetabix.

Wednesday 14th January

Breakfast was a shake, along with one for dinner. For tea I had a couple of egg and bacon sandwiches.

Late in the evening I had a cheese and mustard sandwich.

Thursday 15th January 2009

For a change for breakfast I had another shake and again one for lunch.

Today at work was a total pain, when I hit early afternoon I found myself extremely hungry but having gone nearly two weeks of not abusing my body with coke or crisps, I was going to ensure that I would not break today.

It was a huge relief to get home for some cheese and baked potatoes.

Later in the evening I had a couple of cheese and mustard sandwiches.

This was probably the hardest day I’ve had so far from a hunger point of view.

Friday 16th January 2009

A milk shake for breakfast and dinner, followed by pizza, a few wedges and some garlic bread for tea.

Finished the evening off with a sandwich. Considering now using the exercise bike from tomorrow.

Saturday 17th

Weight: 17ST 3LBS
BMI: 36.5

Milkshake, Milkshake and fry up along with a single cheese sandwich

Sunday 18th

Milk shake for breakfast, milk shake for dinner and some cornflakes mid-afternoon, followed by a fry up in the evening.

Tuesday 20th January

Weight: 17ST 1LBS
BMI: 36.2

Today I decided to weight myself mid-week to see how things were going, I am pretty pleased with the result but home that it continues.

Saturday 24th

Weight: 16ST 10LBS
BMI: 35.4

The whole previous week had consisted solely milk shakes for breakfast and regular meal in the evening.

Today I weighed myself and was delighted to have busted through the 17st barrier. I was so shocked, I had to weigh myself twice on two different scales.

Throughout all of this, I had promised myself that every week I would treat myself with something I liked. This week I actually did it and had a Burger King.

Usually I love those, but strangely after three weeks of no junk food or anything like that – I did not enjoy it at all.

This has been a really great week for my diet, I know other weeks will not be so good but this is a good milestone.

The next one, is to get to 16.5 ST. I am beginning to have belief that I will succeed.

YOU ARE DOING SO GREAT! I don't think I've seen a journal dedicated to such daily recording. Keep up the great work, and you can definitely meet those goals!

How is the exercising goin?
