The closing of "old" threads.

Hey :)

Just wanted to ask about something that I've noticed from time to time. When an "old" thread gets a new reply the mods seem very quick to close it or to go out of their way to make the point that it's an old or dead thread. Why?

Surely the new members (or even old members that have thought of something else to add) can still stand to gain from old threads? By closing them you effectively end possible debate from users that might have something to say and I don't see the reason why just because they haven't had responses in a few months/years that they can't be re-opened to new and fresh debate from more recent members?

Not sure what answer I'm expecting but I've been disappointed when I've gone to comment on a thread only for it to have been shut down for no apparent reason.

Haha.... actually.. I think this really is a good idea.
9/10 the topic at hand is outdated and irrelevant.
Good work, mods!
Sunflower... sorry... I just don't agree with you about this.

I usually check carefully which threads get closed and which stay open. If it's a thread that contains useful info and appears to be of use to new members, I leave it open.

If it's a thread that doesn't seem to have much to offer, or a thread that very little content and a lot of arguing, I close it. There is no need to beat a dead horse, and keep arguing about the same things.

I must admit, with very few exceptions I don't see a point in commenting in threads that are months, sometimes years old. Very often the OP (and most of the other posters) aren't around anymore, have moved on, or the topic is simply outdated.

If there is a particular post that you find useful that has been closed, feel free to mention it to the mods and we'll have another look at it.

I notice that a lot of the old threads that get closed (once they're bumped) are threads that are full of spam and/or bullshit.

Thanks San--If I come by any of the ones that I found relevant I'll send you a PM. I just figure that when people post about the same ol' topics they are encouraged to use the search function and then 9/10 times the thread just gets shut down anyway. Thanks for replying--I can definitely see where you are coming from :)
