That's all i wanted to say.

Its at the bottom of the screen in case you don't know what i mean. You have to click on it for it to go away but it always comes back.

I wish you guys could get rid of it. Its driving me nuts.

I moved the thread to the feedback section.

I do agree, it is bloody annoying, especially the part where it opens a window in the middle of your screen if you accidentally hover your mouse over it.

That said, a forum like this costs money to run, and not just a little bit. Advertising is the only way to cover the cost for a place like this short of charging members, which of course nobody wants. So I'm afraid the ads are a neccessary evil....:(

Well there's a right way and a wrong way of doing it. The wrong way is to annoy your members so much that they leave. I've been on a lot of forums and most of them handle it well. This is the only time i've ever been so annoyed by an adverisement. They should get rid of it. Its not worth the money.

Here are some good examples where advertising is fairly well handled:

facebook
thorntree.lonelyplanet
depressiontribe
photoblog

Also i posted it deliberately in the on topic section because i wanted to see if it upsets other people as much as it does me. By moving the thread down here, its out of sight.

Personally, I find the adds on Facebook extremely annoying, so I guess everybody is different.

I don't think this part of the forum is any less visible than the other parts. The post is feedback, and certainly not on the topic of weightloss, therefore it was in the wrong section. I don't put my diary into the on-topic section either just to get more views.

I don't give a damn as long as the site stays up and running! It's mildly irritating but so is stuff like your post arriving late or your food shopping being delivered on the wrong day. It's kinda annoying but at the end of the day you're getting a free service and should be happy with what you get! The forum is usually very receptive to feedback but advertising is just something they have to do. They could be charging us, that would be worse!

^ Well..... here's one suggestion: (I don't really like the popups either, but I understand the necessity)
Take the fitness magazine banner and move it to the left (or right)
Then you'll have TWO SPACES of banner ads to sell up at the top.
(Since the fitness mag ad is just sitting in the middle with a lot of blank space to the left and right)
Just a thought.

Fitness magazine banner? I don't even seem to see that. For me, the only ads I can see are the one at the bottom, and the text ones underneath the forums, which I just ignore. If there is anything else, I don't see it - my guess is because I'm using a pop-up blocker/ad-blocker.

So there is a certain amount of control in how many adds we see I guess. Sunflower's right though - it's irritating, but not the end of the world. And it keeps the forum free for everybody, which is the main thing as far as I am concerned.

They have to keep the forum free or we'd leave and find another one that doesn't charge.

I agree with monster. There is heaps space in above the "reply to thread" line.

No they don't HAVE to do anything.

The forum is working just fine, and most people just get over themselves and move on, even if they find the ad slightly annoying.

And if you look at it closely, there is a rather sizeable 'x' button on the left hand side to close the ad down. Problem solved.

Yes, because losing YOU because you're annoyed by a banner at the bottom of the screen is more important than making sure this forum remains free to all the thousands and thousands of members who probably have great appreciation that they don't have to pay a dime to have access to all of the great advice and information here on WLF. Which, by the way, is all thanks to that banner at the bottom of the screen you hate so much.

^^ That.

Also, since about five this afternoon, the ad is nowhere to be seen on my screen. Not sure what that's down to (updated my browser around that time), but it's there no more.

One thing that is particularily troublesome about the add is the slow-loading time it adds to the page in certain WiFi areas. For me, I use a 3G MiFi as a hotspot sometimes, and the add causes the page to load SO slowly. Perhaps there is a way to cause the add to feedback based on loading speed of the page (I know certain scripts allow this to happen)... if the page is loading slow, drip the banner. Maybe the IT people that host the page can help with this setting?

Adblockers and pop up blockers take care of it. If it slows down loading time of the page, try something like that.

I heard of those scripts as well though - basically, on slow running connections, the add will show up in a simpler version which doesn't take as much loading time.

Might really be worth looking into that.

we are always experimenting with different banner types, sizes and locations to find a happy balance between annoyance and click-thru. However, as I've mentioned a month ago, we are in the process of switching over to an entirely new platform, so I haven't been paying too much attention to the ads on this forum. There are probably a couple things that I could do in the meantime. I'll be back in a couple hours and try something then.
