Tennis Elbow

Hi All,

I was diagnosed with lateral epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow) a few weeks ago. I have not worked out since (played hockey a couple of times but that is it) and I am seeing a physiotherapist. I am doing some stretches and exercise as per his advice, pus heat and ice therapy, plus acupuncture. The thing is, I have not seen much of an improvement in three weeks. I have never had this before so I really am not sure of the recovery time. It is very frustrating.

Anyone else go through this? There is a doctor that practices ART - an hour or so away from me, I hear good things about it, is that really a 'miracle cure' for tendinitis?

Thanks!

Frank Shamrock (UFC, MMA) said ART was real helpful to him with a back injury. I think it can be expensive, kinda painful, and temporary though.

When I had tennis elbow, I iced my elbows a couple times a day, took Aleve, and wore a compression brace every time I even thought about working out. Avoided "curl exercises", tricep/bicep curls. Took about 2 months to recover.

Did the physiotherapist check out your shoulder to see if it was properly balanced/aligned. When the shoulder is not properly aligned - one or more of the muscles attaching to the shoulder is overly tight - it can cause problems at the elbow.

The body is a series of links and when one link (joint) is restricted, another will usually compensate to provide movement. If the therapist didn't at least do some basic tests for the shoulder and/or shoulderblade, all the ultrasound or other treatment in the world, will be of limited value, if the problem is at the shoulder.

Huh, I was just posting a similar question. It's been like 6 weeks and no progress. My doctor wants to shoot it with cortisone (or something) to see if that works. I think I'll grab a brace, too, though I've had to scrap rows and cleans and some other stuff from my routine. Not cool.

I have had bouts of tennis elbow three times in the last 5 or 6 years. Each time, I laid off of it, iced it when I could, which really helped, and took ibuprofen regularly. After about 3 - 4 weeks, the pain went away but I gave it another month before working it again and it recovered.

Be careful with cortisone. My gp gave me a cortisone shot once which stopped the pain immediately. But cortisone just masks the inflammation and doesn't heal it. There is a real danger of re-damaging the tendon because the pain is masked.

Tennis elbow is often called by simultaneous rotation and extension of the wrist and elbow. The only thing that cured it for me was going really easily on my elbow. I had a cortisone injection and it helped with the pain but only masked the underlying problem. Im at my limit and im not allowed anymore cortisol injections so hopefully it wont act up again.
